- A Singular Death Scene
We learn that on February 24, 1874, a small child of Mr. R.G. Carter, of this county, was burned to death by its clothing taking fire. After death had taken place, the child wa laid out in a box cradle, on a __ quilt, with a pillow under its head. Some hours afterwards, the undertaker went to the cradle to take the measure of the child, preparatory to making a coffin. He was horror-stricken to find, on raising the quilt off the corpes, that the smoke from the cradle filled the room. The pillow was one-forth burned and three or four holes burned in the quilt under the child, a foot large. There was no fire near the cradle and there was no possible chance for fire to get there.
It is therefore concluded that the fire was in the burned child.
The above statement is made on the authority of persons who were present on the occasion.
