- Mrs. Elizabeth Holman Dead.
Pioneer of Callaway County Died at Home of Her Daughter, in Fulton, Sunday Afternoon.
Mrs. Elizabeth J. Holman, 84 years old, died Sunday afternoon at 1:20 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Offett, in Bluff street, after a lingering illness, having been confined to her bed for two months. She had been an invalid for a good many years, suffering a stroke of paralysis some years ago. She was taken with another stroke about five weeks age, and this with the infirmitites of age caused her death.
Funeral services were held at Westminister Presbyterian church, near Hatton, Monday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. S.G. Wood of Auxvasse, and burial was in the cemetery of that church.
Mrs. Holman was born on the old Black homestead, known as the Oscar Black place, near Hatton, March 21, 1841, her eighty-fourth birthday occurring the day before her death. She was a daughter of Samuel and Margaret Black, native West Virginians, and had lived in this county all her life, making her home of the farm until about two years ago when she came to Fulton to live with her daughter. She was the last member of a family of six children, those having died being William, John, Samuel and Oscar Black and Mrs. Mary McClintic.
Mrs. Holman was married January 9, 1861, to James E. Holman of Callaway county. To this union eight children were born, three of whom are dead, one dying in infancy. Samuel H. Holman died March 1, 1885, and Mrs. C.M. Brown died in 1918. The five surviving children are: J.B. Holman, of Hatton, I.W. Holman, of Fulton; W.N. Holman, of Columbia; Mrs. Mary H. Offutt, of Fulton, and Mrs. R.S. Burke, of Mexico.
Mrs. Holman had been a member of the Presbyterian church more than 60 years, and was a charter member of the Westminister church which was organized about 40 years ago. She was a member of one of Callaway's oldest and most substantial families, loving home and rearing her children in the faith which she believed. She practiced its teaching in her daily life and was loved and respected by neighbors and friends. Sympathy is extended to all those who mourn her death.
