  • Notes
    • From the book, History of Callaway County, 1984:
Charles Wesley Love and Anna Elizabeth Bush were married in Columbia, Missouri, on May 25, 1935.

      C. W., or Charlie, was born on March 21, 1911, near Williamsburg in Callaway County; he was one of six children of Edgar Love, born on October 16, 1875, in Callaway County, and Anna Hunt, a twin, born January 28, 1880, and also a Callawegian.

Anna, sometimes called Elizabeth, born April 30, 1916, near New Bloomfield, was the second of five children born to Allen K. Bush and Iva Jane Jones. Allen, born February 4, 1885, and Iva Jane, born July 9, 1887, were both born in Callaway County.

      C. W. and Ann had three children: Mary Jane, Kenneth Dale, and Joyce.

After the International Shoe Factory opened on Fifth Street in December 1933, C. W. started work with the company in April 1934. He rose to the rank of foreman of the fitting room and continued with International until the factory closed in 1960. At that time both he and Anna were employed there. C. W. transferred with the company to Hannibal for thirteen months, but the call of Callaway was strong, and they returned to Fulton to enter food service at the Fulton State Hospital. Charlie retired from there on January 1, 1978.

Following the death of Anna Elizabeth, March 15, 1975, Charles married Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Payton, December 12, 1975. Betty, born in Callaway on June 24, 1921, is the daughter of William Oliver Hockmeyer, born April 4, 1882, and Mary Kathryne Backer, born October 7, 1883, both in Callaway County, was the widow of William Walter Payton, born in Fulton, June 17, 1906. Betty and William were married in St. Charles, February 27, 1943. They had one son, Ronnie Lee. Betty was also employed at the shoe factory from 1941 until its close in 1960. When she retired in the summerof 1983, she was a dietary supervisor at the Fulton State Hospital.

Betty and Charlie enjoy antiques, especially sugar shakers, and are kept quite busy quilting the many quilt tops brought them from not only Callaway, but from the neighboring counties.
