Holman to his sister Mary R.(Holman) Caldwell, told of their sister America's husband Volney Suggett's death. William wrote this in part: Envelope: Postmark St. Aubert Mo Feb 3 To: Mrs Mary R. Caldwell Greenwood Sebastion Co Ark Jan 16th 1881 Dear Sister as Fannie and myself have written you several letters lately I had no thought of troubling you further for the present But it becomes my painful duty to chronicle the death of our beloved Brother Volney Suggett who died the 28th of Dec of malariel fever we have no particulars in regards to his death one of the girls wrote to sister Emily She said the letter was written with a pencil and was hard to read we hope to hear something more particular soon I indeed Sympathize with sister Ameck in this sad bereavement in that distant land [California] without any relations except her children to comfort her in her afflictions and encourage her in fighting the battles of life. but to the christian there is in every land a friend that sticketh closer than a brother he is a husband to the widow a father to the fatherless not only willing to help but whose store house of goodness is always full I understand that George entends to send for her to come back which I have no doubt she would be glad to do...............Your Brother Will 1860 Census Missouri, Montgomery Co.
