    • Robert Holt's will was dated Aug 16, 1812 and acknowledge by him on June 12, 1819. It was presented for probate on the first Monday in July 1821.

      In the name of God amen. I Robert Holt of the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, being of sound Disposing mind & memory, do make this my Last Will & Testament to wit
      First it is my Will that my Executors as soon after my decease as practicable pay all my Just Debts--
      Secondly I give and bequeath to the children of my Daughter Jane to wit Robert Givens Nancy Givens William Givens & Samuel Givens two Negroes named Mary, Dolly child of Mary and all their increase, until the youngest of said children arrives at age, at which time the said Negroes and their increase if any to be delivered to them by my Executors to be equally divided amongst them and in case either of said children should die previous to the youngest one having attained that age, then his or their share or shares to be equally divided amongst the survivors of them -- The Negroes aforesaid to be hired out by my Executors until the youngest child is of age, as aforesaid -- Then the proceeds of such hire to be equally divided amongst them or the survivors of them at the time of the delivery of the negroes - and if all said children should die before the period aforesaid - then said Negroes their issue and hire to revert to my other property, to be disposed of as herein after pointed out-
      Thirdly I give and Bequeath to my son Irby Holt two Negroes named Aron and Nicy--
      Fourthly I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Meigs four negroes named Rebecka & her children Nancy & William & Esther --
      Fifthly I give and bequeath to my Daughter Milly Cox two Negroes named Hannah & Peter, and to my Daughter Sarah Holt I will & Bequeath two Negroes named Edy and James --
      Sixthly I give and Bequeath to my daughter Fanny Holt two Negroes Celia & Miriah.
      Seventhly all the Rest or Residue of my Estate Real and personal I give and bequeath to my loving wife Milly Holt during her Natural life to be by her enjoyed recommending to her notice my two Youngest Daughters Fanny & Sarah, with a request, that if ever they Marry that she may give them out of the property in her possession, so much thereof consisting of a horse, Bed & furniture &c as I have heretofore given to their sisters at the time of their Marriage -- And after the decease of my Wife it is my Will that my Executors then living Sell and dispose of to the best advantage either at public or private sale, all my Lands and all the personal property of every description that my be on the premises, or any at her place that would of right belong to my estate at that time -- And the proceeds of said sale to be divided into Six equal Shares five of which shall be given to my five children, to wit Irby Betsy Melia Sarah & Fanny -- and the remaining sixth share to be equally divided amongst the children of my daughter Jane aforesaid, or the survivors of them and if none of them should be alive, then the sixth share aforesaid together with all herein before Bequested to them, to be equally divided amongst my other children -- Lastly I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my Wife Milly Holt Executrix & my son Irby & Lewis Cox Executors of this my Last Will and Testament, hereby ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament.
      In witness whereof I have hereunto set my name and affixed my seal this 16th day of August eight hundred & twelve.

      The State of Tennessee
      To all persons Greetings --
      Whereas at our court of pleas and quarter sessions held for Knox County at the court house in Knoxville on the first Monday of July 1821 - It appeared to the court that Robert Holt late of said county had died having first made his last Will and Testament in which Lewis Cox Irby Holt & Milly Holt are appointed executors and the said Will having been proved and admitted to record and the Said Lewis Cox qualified as Executor thereof (Liberty having been reserved for the other Executors or Either of them to qualify when they may see fit) - It was ordered, that Letters Testamentary issue &c-- we therefore empower you the said Lewis Cox to take into your possession all and singular the goods and chattels, rights & credits of the said Testator wheresoever the same may be found: an all just Debts of the Said Testator, and all the Legacies Specified in the said Will, well and truly to pay as far as the said goods & Chattels rights & Credits may extend, and in all things to administer the said goods & Chattels rights & credits according to the tenor of the said Will, and the Law of the Land -- Witness Charles McClung clerk of our said court at office the first Monday of July 1821.

      Robert Holt and his wife Mildred Stanfield Holt are buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Knox County Tennessee. The cemetery is located on Westland Drive in the western part of Knox County, near the intersection of Westland Drive and Ebenezer Road. The Cemetery is now on the grounds of the Ebenezer Methodist Church but still belongs to the Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. At the time of the death of Robert Holt and of his wife Mildred Holt, this was the site of the Upper Grassy Valley Presbyterian Church.

      # Note: Thomas Stanfield died in 1783 in Halifax Co. VA. His wife Elizabeth Banks was the daughter of Thomas Banks who died in Bedford Co. VA in 1755.
      # Note: The voter list of Halifax county in 1816 included Robert Holt. 2
      # Note: Robert Holt does not appear on any of the muster lists for VA during the Revolutionary War. His service seems to have been confined to providing 2 bushels of corn for which he claimed compensation in May 1782. 3
      # Note: Death Notice of Robert Holt: Died on Saturday evening last, Mr. Robert Holt, long a citizen of this county. He had been sick for some time but had considerably recovered and but little doubt remained of his being restored to health. After having set up part of the day, he was advised to go to bed in order to sleep as was usual with him during his sickness did so, but it was the sleep of death. The deceased leaves behind him a wife and a number of children. Knoxville Register, June 5, 1821
