Eberly's father Willam Monroe Powell died about three weeks before he was born and his mother died when he was less than 3 months old. His grandfather Robert Powell was his legal guardian but William and Margaret's children were actually raised by various aunts and uncles according to records of payments for their care that were made by Robert Powell. His uncle Robert Todd Powell and his wife relocated from Missouri to Colusa, Colusa Co, CA and I'm sure that was the motivation for Eberly to follow. Several of his aunts and uncle had made the trip to California in the early 1850's. Alvan and Alfred (my gg-grandfather) returned to Missouri fairly quickly. William and Garrison may have returned at that same time or shortly thereafter. Milroy and Nancy Jane (brother and sister) both died on the wagon train to California).
