Notes |
- Name: John Key
Sex: M
Birth: 11 JUL 1630 in Settrington, East Riding, Yorkshire England
Death: in Charles City, Virginia
Note:
John Key, was born July 11, 1630 in Settrington, East Riding, Yorkshire, England according to the Registry p.35. He died in Charles City, Virginia. He married Elizabeth -- -?---.
There was a ten-year hiatus in the Parish register just prior to John coming to America. Three of his known children did not accompany him to America, but that was the time of the bubonic plague in England, and many children died, evidence of which is contained in the Parish Register. John and Edmund were granted land on arrival in America, 50 acres for each individual in the family, including children. Their land was in Charles City county, VA on the South side of James River, the area later becoming Prince George's county. Mary, daughter of Edmund, married John Waller III and their descendants lived alongside John's descendants for three generations along the Mataponie River in New Kent Co., later King William Co., then Spotsylvania Co.
The source for this information was Cavaliers & Pioneers, Patent Bk 6 p.35 (arrival in America), p.146 John, and his brother, Edmund, are listed with the names of their families.
Dr. Gene Key states that there is some confusion about the parents of the children of Edmund and John. It seems that Mary is assigned to Edmund by all the sources I've found. The other known children are assigned to John. According to Dr. Key "None of the children except Mary and John Jr. are shown as having descendants in this work, therefore the matter of which children belonged to which brother does not impact on the contents herein. The children have been diligently researched with no success at this time."
John and Edmund were granted land in Charles City County, VA when they arrived in America. The existing measure was 50 acres per person, including children. The granted land on the south side of the James River, that area later became Prince George's County. That area later become Prince
George's county. Mary, daughter of Edmund, married John Waller III in England and immigrated to America around the same time as John Key. They and their descendents lived alongside John's descendents for three generations along the Mataponie River in New Kent County, later King William County and ultimately Spotsylvania County.
