- 1698. William, son of Richard, was not yet 15 when bound out to Richard Covington in 1698 and seems to have come of age about 1705. His plantation was at and partly over the King & Queen Co. line. He seems to have been a comfortable farmer. All of his children were under age and unmarried in 1734:

1734, 4 Apr. In the Name of God Amen in ye year of our Lord 1734, April ye 4th day William Holt of Southfarnham Parish in Essex Co. in VA being very sick & weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God therefore calling to mind ye mortality of my body & knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make & ordain this my last Will & Testament that is to say principally & first of all I give & recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and for my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in Christian like manner at the discretion of my Exr. & as touching such worldly things or Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this Life I give devise & Dispose of ye same in ye following manner & form: Imprimes I give to my well beloved Son Robert Holt one hundred acres of land whereon I now live at ye age of Eighteen for him and his heirs lawfully begotten but in case he should die haveing no heirs then to fall to my beloved Sons Wm. & Richd. Holt & ye sd Robt. Holt to give to my beloved Wm. & Richd. Holt 500 pounds of good & lawfull Tobacco to be paid to each of them at ye age of Eighteen which at that age I set them for their selves. Item. I give to my daughter Ann Holt a lume & all belonging to it one cow & heafer & two Ewes to be paid her at ye age of Sixteen by my Exr. which is Barnet Pain Junr. Item I give to my daughter Eliza. Holt one cow & a heafer to be paide her at ye age of Sixteen. Item. I give to my Son Wm. Holt my gun at ye age of eighteen. Item I give to my son Wm. a cow yearling which his God father left him. Item I give to my daughter Mary Holt a cow at the age of sixteen. Item I give to my daughter Sarah Holt a cow & calf at the age of sixteen & as for my other estate to be equally divided amongst ye said Children except one trunk wich I give my daugter Ann Holt & ye aforesaid Barnett Pain junr I make and ordain my only & sole Exr. of this my last will & Testament & desire my Exr. to take care of my Children & not let them be bound & to take care of their part of ye Estate til they come to this age ye boys 18 and ye girls sixteen. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & Seal the day & date above written. Signed sealed published pronounced & declared by ye sd Wm. Holt as his last will & Testament in ye presence of us Subrs. Test: Roger Bell; Lawrence X Franklin; Benjamen Franjlyn. /s/ William (MH) Holt. At a Court held for Essex County on ye xxist day of May MDCCXXXIV. This Last Will & Testament of William Holt, dec'd was proved by Barnett Payne Exr. therein named & being further proved by the oaths of Roger Bell & Benja. Franklyn 2 of ye witnesses thereto was admitted to record.
1734. Know all men by these presents that we Barnett Paine Junr. Barnett Paine Senr & Moses Carnall are held & firmly bound unto Thos. Waring, Robert Brooke, James Garnett Gent Justices of ye County of Essex in the sum of 500 lbs sterling this xxist day of May MDCCXXXIV.
The Condition of this obligation is such that if ye above bound Barnett Paine junr. Exr. of the last will and Testament of William Holt decd do make or cause to be made a true & perfect inventory of all the goods chattles and credits of the sd decd the same so made do exhibit or cause to be exhibited in the County Court of Essex at such time as he shall be thereunto required by the sd Court & further do make a just and true account of his actings and doings therein when thereto required by the sd Court and do well and truly pay and deliver all the legacies contained & specified in the sd Testamt. as farr as the sd goods chattles & credits will thereunto extend according to the value thereof & the Law shall charge Then this obligation to be void...
