- They settled in Callaway Co, MO in 1819.
The following is from the Pioneer Families of Missouri book written in 1876, which is not always accurate:
BROOKS, James Brooks married ELIZABETH HOLT, daughter of TIMOTHY HOLT, and settled in Callaway Co. in 1819. His children were Robert, John, Elizabeth, Winifred, Ann, Fanny and James.
1819 MO Pioneers by Rose states James to MO 1819, however earliest date seen in Boone Co. is 1823. His dtr, Anna's bplace is given as 1821/22 TN on MO Census 1850-60-70. MO Pioneers by Rose lists the children as written. Winifred & Fanny nor their heirs are named in James will -presumed to have died unmarried.
1822 "Abner Holt & James Brooks of Callaway Co MO give POA to Hiram Holt, same county to recover from the adminstrator of Timothy Holt, dec'd of alifax Co VA all money due from his estate.
1845, Mch. Will. I, James Brooks Sr. of Boone Co. & State of MO calling to mind that it is appointed for all men to die & being aged & infirm in body but sound of mind & memory to make & constitute this my last will & testament.
First, it is my will that all my just debts be paid.
Second. I give to my beloved wife Elizabeth Brooks my land, household & kitchen furniture together with so much as she will have need of plantation tools & also as many horses, cattle, sheep & hogs.
Third. I give to my son, Robert Brooks, lawful heirs of his body & my son James Brooks all the land & tennements there is contained after the death of my wife all the property willed to my wife except the land after her death to be sold & equally divided between the balance of my heirs hereafter named. That is to say, Elizabeth A. Gray, Anny Holt & John Brooks heirs.
Lastly, I nominate & appoint my friends & sons, James C. Barger, Robert Brooks & Robert Brandon my lawful executors to this my last will & testament, making all others heretofore made by me.....whereof I have herewith set my hand & affixed my seal in the year of our Lord 1844 (sic), the 19th day of Feb. 1845 in the presencer of Samuel B. Long & Smith A. Brandon /S/ James X Brooks
1845 On Mar 8, 1845 all executors refused to qualify & John Ellis appointed.
He married Elizabeth Holt III, daughter of Timothy Holt & Elizabeth Chambers, About 1800 in Halifax Co VA. Born About 1780 in Halifax Co VA. Died After 1850 in Callaway Co MO.
