James T. Maxey was born about 1844, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, the son of Bennett Hail Maxey and Frances Eason.
James' family moved to Izard County, Arkansas prior to 1858. James appears on the 1860 Izard County census with his family. He is listed as 16 years old.
James fought in the Civil War. He enlisted in Company K of the 16th Arkansas Infantry on November 7, 1861, at Carrolton, Arkansas.
James died on June 20, 1862, at Enterprise, Mississippi during the War.
