From the History of Callaway Co. Book:
Proprietor of Herring's Mill and farmer. Mr Herring, who has been successfully engaged in the milling business in this county for forty-six years, comes of that old Callaway family, whose name he bears, so largely represented in this volume and so usefully identified with the material development and prosperity of the county. He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, August 7, 1819, and when he was nineteen years of age, in 1838, his parents, John and Lucy (Carver) Herring, removed to Missouri and settled in Callaway county, where they lived until their deaths.
The same year he came out with his parents to this county, James C. Herring engaged in milling, and worked in the first steam mill-that of White & Jones-ever started in the county. This mill he rented and ran for seventeen years. From that time on he has continued the milling business, and has been at his present mill since 1866. It is estimated that the grain he has ground since he came to this county, if loaded in two-horse wagons, would make a train of teams over sixty miles long. From this it is seen that his life has not been an idle one, nor of little value to the people among whom he lives. Mr. Herring is also engaged in farming, and has a small farm adjoining his mills.Away back, on the 17th of June, 1841, now over forty years ago, he was married to Miss Sarah J. Knight, formerly of Kentucky. She still lives to brighten the Indian summer of his life.
Mr. Herring has been in Missouri for over forty years, and he and his wife are both time-proved and exemplary members of the Christian church.
