On July 25, 1875 he was struck by lightning, and may have died from the effects of that. Weekly Missouri Statesman, July 23, 1875: Mr. C.J. Gibbs, an old and highly respected citizen of the county was considerably shocked by a stroke of lightning on Friday evening last at his residence near Fulton. His will was witnessed by B.F. Overton, my 3rd great grandfather, who was a cousin of Churchill Gibbs. B.F. Overton's mother was Sarah Gibbs.
