  Warning--he has been erroneously listed as being on the 1820 Adair County, KY census. This has since been shown to be a Joel Coffey. Joel was in the 1781 Culpeper militia class. What was the age range for the militia? Joel likely remained and died in Madison (formerly Orange) County, Virginia. Need to seek estate papers. Robert Underwood and Joel Coffer were plaintiffs in an 1805 Madison County Court Action relating to the will of Nathan Underwood (d. 9 AUG 1802). Robert was Nathan's grandson. Abraham Cofer m. Nancy Fletcher, Sept. 11, 1800 and George Cofer m. Julia Underwood, May 24, 1801 in Madison County, VA ...all other potential Cofer parents are known to have left the County before then, making Joel and Eleanor the likely parents.
