Death of an Old Pioneer
Stephen Henson Hyten, one of the oldest men in the county, died at the residence of his son-in-law, John Carrington, five miles south-west of Fulton, on the 17th inst.., aged 90 and 4 months. Until within the last month or so he was unusually vigorous for one of his age being able to ride to town and around in the neigborhood on horseback and also retained his mental faculties unimpaired, but lately his body and mind gave away worn out with age.
He was born in Montgomery county, Maryland, August 18th, 1795 and when a small boy, with his parents, emigrated to Montgomery county, Kentucky. At the age of 19 he entered in the service of the war of 1812, for which he drew a pension. He married in Kentucky and settled in Callaway county in 1830 with his family. He always road a fat horse, and was one of the most faithful and untiring men we ever known in waiting on the sick. He never failed to attend the bedside of a sick neighbor and as a nurse he had few equals. He was a man of fixed opinions and strict rectitude, and a member of the Regular Baptist church. One daughter, Mrs. John Carrington, and a number of grandchildren survive him.
The remains were interred at the family cemetery near Carrington, last Friday evening.

Notes	Veteran of the War of 1812 per Soldiers list The following is from the Pioneer Families of Missouri book written in 1876, which is not always accurate: HYTEN, Joseph Hyten, of Maryland, married PRISCILLA CAYWOOD, and their son, Josiah, married REBECCA CAYWOOD, and settled in Montgomery Co., KY., in 1810. Their children were William, Stephen H., and Otho. Stephen H. was in the war of 1812. He married NANCY MCGARY, and settled in Callaway Co. in 1830. Their children were Sampson, Landrum, Stephen, Susan, Mary, Malinda, Rebecca, Nancy and Amanda.
