Notes |
- At the 1846 July Term of the Supreme Court of Missouri, a case concerning Elizabeth S. Smith Kemp nee Wood's slave named Sophia revealed that Elizabeth's first husband Samuel Smith died in Warren County, Missouri in 1840, that she was his second wife, they had no children, and her slave Sophia was received from the estate of her deceased father, name not given. Her marriage to Samuel Smith in 1828 occurred in Franklin County, Virginia, and shows her maiden name was Woods. John Kemp's marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Smith nee Woods was recorded in Warren County, Missouri in 1841. Samuel Smith was the older brother of William H. Smith whose wife Mary "Polly" Kemp was the daughter of John Kemp and Fannie Dudley.
