- Edward G. Berry Dead
Callaway's Oldest Citizen, Aged Ninety-Seven Years, Died Thursday in Auxvasse Township.
Edward G. Berry, who had lived in Callaway County since 1823, and the oldest resident of the county, died at his home near Reform, Auxvasse township, Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock. A short time ago Mr. Berry went to a lot adjoining his house to watch his son, Robert Berry, and a foree of men kill hogs, and while on his way back to the house slipped and fell. His injuries were so serious that he had to go to bed, and from that time his condition grew worse.
Mr. Berry was a son of Richard Berry, who came to Missouri from Kentucky in 1820. The family first settled in St. Clair county, but three years afterward they moved to Callaway and settled on the Maloney farm, on Garden Prairie, southeast of Fulton. Mr. Berry was born in Washington county, Kentucky, August 13, 1807, and was therefore in the ninety-eighth year of his life.
Mr. Berry was a soldier in the Black Hawk war of 1832 and probably the last survivor of that conflict living in central Missouri. He was married to Miss Sally Ann Galbreath, a daughter of Talton Galbreath, an early Callaway settler, in February, 1833. She died October 28, 1867.
After his marriage, Mr. Berry bought land in Auxvasse township and moved to it. He was industrious and thrifty and soon accumulated a competency.
Mr. Berry was one of the men who gave strength and dignity of character to Missouri. He was a man of generous impulses, of kindly disposition and his long life was filled with usefulness. Many men in Callaway were given a start in life by him, and no man that ever lived in the county was of more real service to it.
Considering his age, Mr. Berry was exceptionally strong and hearty up to within a few weeks of his death. He rode horse-back until a year or two ago, and within the last four years made the trip from his home to Fulton and back in that way. Up to the time of taking his bed, he could read without spectacles and delighted in doing chores about the house. His mind was clear, and his recollection of pioneer life in Missouri was of invaluable aid to local historians.
Nancy Hanks, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, was a servant in the family of Mr. Berry's father when they lived in Kentucky.
Captain Robert Berry, of Wlliamsburg, now 87 years old, is a brother of the deceased, and Samuel Berry, of this city, Robert Berry of Reform, Edward Berry of Bachelor, and Caleb Berry, of Audrain county, are surviving children. Miss Margaret Berry, who was the wife of Judge W.R. Terry, was his daughter and died a number of years ago, as did two sons, Angus and John Berry.
Funeral services will be held today and burial will occur in the family cemetery on the John Maloney farm, southeast of Fulton, at 2:00 o'clock this afternoon.
