Notes |
- Brothers William and Alexander went west in 1858, driving Government teams to Salt Lake City, Utah, and pushed on to Carson City, Nevada, and on finding no work, they went to Carson Valley, Nev. An inventory of their possessions showed them seventy-five cents to the good. They hired themselves to Mr. Mott to make fence posts during the winter, at $40.00 per month and board. The following spring (1859) gold was discovered at Gold Hill, Nev., and they joined the rush, taking up a claim on what is known as "Gold Hill, which developed into a rich mine. In 1860, Alexander sold his interest for $40,000. William retained his share until the mine was worked out and realized more than a million dollars. They moved to San Jose, Cal., in the early "sixties" and retired from business
