These forms were completed as a project by the girls in high school and made a permanent part of the Fulton Public Library.

Ancestor No. 13

She was born at the Old Simcoe Place and was a small girl at the time of the War. One day, during the War, she and her sister went to a neighbors home and on the way back they met a troop of soldiers. They were very frightened but one soldier stopped and told them not to be afraid that they wouldn't hurt them.

She had blue eyes and black hair. She weighed about 115 lbs and was 5'6" tall.

9379 In Memory of Mrs. Lucy Herring
Ham's Prairie, Mo. May 28
The subject of this brief notice was the daughter of James and Sallie Simcoe and was born in Albemarle county, Va., Nov. 8, 1808, and on Dec. 3, 1829 married Geo. W. Herring. In the autumn of 1835 they bade audieu to the scenes of their childhood and eary youth and came overland to Missouri, arriving in Callaway county in October of the same year. Her husband was a soldier in the war of 1812 and took part in the most noted land engagements. His death occurred July 23rd, 1878. Since, she has resided on the old homestead with her son, W.D. Herring.
Mrs. Herring was the mother of 12 children - two having died in infancy - the rest living to adult age, are Jeames, J. L., W. H., G. W., and W. D. The daughters are: Mesdames Brandon, Craighead, Fletcher (now dead), Gannaway and King.
Her death was the resolt of a severe attack of catarrhal pnuemonia and occurred Tuesday, April 7, 1896, aged 87 years, 4 months, and 19 days. She had been a resident of the county 61 years and had witnessed the almost marvelous changes wrought by the hands of the hardy, industrious pioneers and their worthy descendants. Usually extreme old age is attended by loss of mind and bodily vigor, but her mental powers remained unabated and the lamp of reason went out only in the delirium that preceded death.
Mrs. Herring was esteemed ___ by those most intimate with her and leaves a memory rich with the details of a life well lived and of a work well done. She was blessed with a disposition that was above the evil speaking, scandal loving, as it has been said of her that she was never known to speak an unkind word of anyone.
On Wednesday, April 8th, she was laid to rest in the family buring ground to await the final summons. She has finished a long and useful life, loved and respected by all who knew her and leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to lament her death.
To her there is no death,
What seems so is transition,
This life of mortal breath,
Is but a suburb of the life elysian
Whose portal we call death.

The newspaper index gives 15 Dec 1838, but this may be a transcription error or a typo by the person who transcribed the newspaper file. If this is correct, she was born within 3 months after the family came to Callaway Co., Missouri from Albemarle Co., Virginia. The date on her headstone is 15 Nov 1837. This would mean she was born in Albemarle Co., Virginia and came to Missouri when she was about 1 year old. The census records show her born in Missouri. Death certificate says 15 Nov 1837. 9386 Mrs. Mary F. Herring Dead
Passed Away Sunday at Age of 83 Years With All Her Children Still Living
The death of Mrs. Mary Frances Herring, 83 years old, shortly after midnight, Saturday, revels that the eight children born to her are still living, a very unusual coincidence. The death of Mrs. Herring occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lou Roberts, of Bluff street, with whom she had been making her home for sometime, from asthma and bronchitis. She had been suffering with these aliments for about three months.
Mrs. Herring, whose maiden name was Simcoe, was born in Callaway county, February 1, 1836 and was married to Dabney Carver Herring, February 26, 1857. He preceeded her in death 23 years ago. Besides Mrs. Roberts, she is survived by the folling sons and daughters: Mrs. J. L. Henderson of Fulton; Mrs. Mollie Hyten of Carrington, Mrs. Henry Jatho and Mrs. J.H. Mirts of the Mt. Carmel neighborhood, Tom of Dixie, Brooks of Kansas City and Guy of Elk City, Oklahoma.
A brother, Dirrett Simcoe, is at the point of death at his home near Centralia. Other brothers and sisters surviving are: James of Slater, John of near Thompson, Mrs. Lucy Herring of Fulton, Mrs. Harry Sacre of St. Louis, Mrs. R.A. Wright of Calwood and Mrs. Susan LaRue of Concord. She also leaves fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mrs. Herring was a splendid woman of the eary day type, and all who knew her loved her for her unselfish traits and her neighborly, motherly disposition. Her passing will be mourned by many. She has been a member of the Christian church all of her life.
Funeral services were held at five o'clock Sunday afternoon, at the Mt. Carmel Methodist church. Rev. W. Garnet Alcorn, officiating and burial was in the church cemetery.

9393 Died, at the residence of his son-in-law, Robert Wright, about seven miles northeast of Fulton, Reuben B. Simcoe, aged 88 years, 2 months, and 9 days. Funeral services and burial at Ebenezer Church.
Uncle Reuben married Miss Sarah C. Hill in Albemarle County Virginia in the fall of 1825 and moved to this county in the same fall, arriving here in October and settled on Richland Creek. He bought a farm four miles west of Fulton where he lived for many years until all his children married and left him. He then broke up housekeeping and lived with his children.
He united with the Christian church in 1854, under the preaching of D. Pat Henderson. His wife, who survives him, joined at the same time. They raised eleven children, all of whom are married and have families. The children are: Mrs. D.C. Herring, Mrs. G.C. Herring, Mrs. J.G. Berry, Mrs. William Sacre, Mrs. Robert Wright, Mrs. Jacob Larne, all of whom reside in this county. The boys are James, who lives at Centralia, Derritt who also lives at Centralia, John who lives in Audrain, Henry in Boone county, and Charles in this county.
Uncle Reuben was one of those hard working, rugged, honest men who helped to make this country what it is today. He was a man of an iron constitution and could do more hard work than anybody. Few men could hold up a hand spike with him at a log rolling. As an axe man, he had but few equals; always in a good humor and ready to assist a neighbor when in a pinch. While he was cheerful and easy to get along with, he had his convictions and when he took a stand on any question, he was there to stay. He was an old states' rights democrat and on these points there was no compromise with him. He voted the democratic ticket for over 60 years. It is with sadness and regret that we see these old, sturdy, reliable pioneers pass away.
Our readers will observe that Uncle Reuben and Felix Nichols were both born May 10, 1805. One lived here 6- years and the other 68 years, one living 8 days longer than the other -,
Ebenezer Church has lost an honest upright member; his children a kind and upright father; and his wife a devoted husband; therefore, be it resolved: we extend to his family our heartfelt sympathies, ever pointing his children to the lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world, and that a copy of these resolutions be placed on the church book.

Law Suit at Calwood
Justice Wade Woods' court, at Calwood, was the scene of a rather remarkable law suit, Monday. Dr. R.S. Simcoe and Benjamin Dudley had cattle in adjoining pastures, and each owned a speckled calf that looked very similar. Mr. Dudley missed his calf, and seeing what he felt certain was the identical animal in the doctor's grass patch, put it on the Dudley side of the fence. Then the doctor missed the calf he claimed as his, and proved to a jury that Dudley's calf had died and that the bovine Dudley claimed, belonged to Simcoe. The suit accordingly was decided in the doctor's favor. D.H. Harris was attorney for Dr. Simcoe, while N.D. Thurmond plead Mr. Dudley's case, and it is said to have been one of the hardest fought forensic battles that ever occurred in a Calwood court.
