John N. Bennett, Dead
John N. Bennett, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Callaway county, died at the home of his son, E. Bennett, near Mokane, Monday afternoon July 2, 1906. John Bennett was a good man. in fact, he was better to his neighbors and friends than he was to himself. He was once elected sheriff of Callaway county and filled the office acceptable. Away back in the forties, he crossed the plains with a company of men who were seeking their fortunes and looking for gold in California. It is said that out of the company of gentlemen who composed the make up of this search for gold in the far west at that early day, our old friend Mr. Jerry Muir of McCredie is the only one now living that made that trip. It was our pleasure to meet Mr. Muir in Fulton Monday and have him as our guest at dinner at the Palace Hotel. He is well preserved and his health, barring his eyesight, is remarkedly good for a man of his age. Mr. Muir had left town before the news of Mr. Bennett's death had reached there, but his son, Jack Muir, called him up over the phone and told him the sad news. The old gentleman was deeply affected and no doubt shed tears on hearing the news of the demise of his old time boyhood friend. | John N. Bennett

DIED
Blackburn - - At her residence about 3 miles south of Fulton on June 24, 1885, Mrs. Annie E. H. Blackburn wife of Thomas Blackburn.
The funeral services were held at the Christian Church in this city Tuesday 10:30 a.m., the services being conducted by Rev. W. H. Marquess, of the Presbyterian Church, and Rev. G. W. Penn, of the Methodist Church. Burial at the New Cemetery.
At the beginning of his discourse, Mr. Marquess gave the following brief sketch of Mrs. Blackburn's life:
Annie E. H. Blackburn, the daughter of Eden and Celia Benson, was born in Maryland March 14, 1824. Her parents emigrated to Missouri in 1833 and settled near Willamsburg, Callaway county, moving from there to Portland, and thence to Coates Prairie. She was married to Thomas Blackburn Dec. 15, 1846. After residing in Portland for several years, they moved to Fayette, Howard county, thence to Waverly, Lafaytte county, returning to this county on the death of her mother. They resided in Fulton for three years during the war, and then moved to the farm 2 ? miles south of Fulton, where she died. A true and faithful wife, and affectionate and self-denying mother, a kind good neighbor, she leaves to mourn her decease her husband, son, daughter, three brothers, grandchildren and many relatives.
She has been a great and constant sufferer for many years, bearing her afflictions with exemplary patience; even to the last day of life thinking and planning for the welfare of those around her. To a friend she expressed herself as trusting hopefully in the mercy of her Heavenly Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who looking tenderly on the woman at his feet said "Let her alone she hath done what she could." | Ann Elizabeth Benson
|

From her husband's obituary in 1899:
He was married to Miss Annie Benson, daughter of the late Eden Benson in 1846, who preceded him to the grave 14 years ago, lacking one day. To This union were born three children, Charles E., Georgia A., and Thomas B. The two former are dead.

He married a second time to Maggie unknown. I have no other information about her, she was listed as wife on his death certificate.
At the time of his death, he was living in Sturgeon, Boone Co., Missouri. Donald Benson of Fulton gave the information for his death certificate. Says he was born in St. Louis county, but I have found no other proof of that, his family was living in Callaway county in 1870 and 1880. He was never in the military. He was a farmer. | Marvin Vinson Benson
