Run Over by Automobile
Patrick Payne, ten-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Payne, of Ham's Prairie, was run over Sunday morning by an automobile driven by E.L. Koontz, of this city, and had both bones in his left leg broken below the knee.
The accident happened in the public road, near the residence of A.J. Bartley, south of Ham's Prairie. The boy had accompanied his father to Mokane, so that Mr. Payne could take a train there and go to Tebbetts where he teaches school, and was returning home on horseback. Seeing the automobile ahead of him and knowing that his horse would be frightened at it, he dismounted and led the animal to the side of the road. As the automobile approached, the horse wheeled in its fright. The boy held to the bridle reins, and was thrown into the roadway directly in front of the automobile. It was impossible to stop or turn the machine, and it passed over him.
Mr. Koontz was on his way to Mokane to meet his daughter, Miss Ida Mae Koontz, who was returning from Boonville. A passing buggy took the boy to his home, where prompt surgical attention was rendered. For a time it was thought possible that he suffered internal injuries, but he is imporving now, and no serious consequences are feared. | Patrick M. Payne

Not sure what Adm means next to Ruben's name. If the father was dead it would mean he was the administrator of the estate, but that's not the case. He is listed as head of house with his parents and brothers and sisters living there. He is listed as manager of farm for occupation and his father is listed as farm labor.

On 1850 and 1860 census, Robert was listed as male. Probably the census taker was told the name as assumed it was a boy, but Robert Ella Payne was a girl. On 1870, name is Robertella and finally listed as female.
She married James Payne. I do not know who his family was.

I have not transcribed the article yet. Jun 20, 2009. | James Richard Penn
