8151 Mrs. Farmer Dead.
Died at the residence of her son, L.K. Farmer, at Cedar City, Mrs. Martha A. Farmer, aged 82 years. Burial Sunday, November 5, at Hart cemetery. Mrs. Farmer was one of those good old motherly women who are missed by the entire community. She was a daughter of the late Louis Overton, her first husband being the father of Hon. Charles Samuel and her second husband being a Farmer. From this marriage there were children as follows: T.L., R.B., W.R., A.P., L.D., A.R., and S.J. all first class citizens and good men. She passed away without a pang and fell asleep as quietly as a babe.

Was living in Ceder City in 1883 at the time of her brother James death.

Her obit gives the initials of 7 children living, but I've only found 6. I think that Augustus might be the 7th child, but not sure.

Taylor Letter to Overton
Article submitted by: Alice Comer Meyer
Letter to Miss Overton regarding the death of John Jameson Comer
The following letter was written to Mary Elizabeth Overton, the bride-to-be of John Jameson Comer, from a friend of John's, J. Len Taylor. J. Len was under the impression that John had been killed in an Indian attack. See article printed in the Kansas City World on June 12, 1898.

Aurora,
October 7, 1862
Miss Overton,

This letter from a stranger brings bad news to you. The heart that was yours though a long exile, the brave generous heart of John J. Comer has, according to the evidence before us, ceased forever to beat. Others from your immediate neighborhood have written his father concerning his fate, therefore, I do not hesitate to write as you will hear it before the receipt of this.

I have been his partner for nearly three years and have thoroughly understood his affairs during that time. His reason for not returning sooner is the same that influences all young men who left home under similar circumstances, lack of fortune, not poverty nor the want of any necessary comfort, but a lack of that super abundance which makes a hero out of the successful, and a wretch of who fails

John's property has been for the last two years of a character to keep the hope of a fortune constantly excited.. You know the nature of mining, probably well enough to understand this. This lingering two years in expectation, he finally concluded to go home at all hazards, and came here from Gold Kill to settle up his business and take the steamer. He refused to sell his mining stock and other property in the village as it was likely to become much more valuable.

When he came back (which he intended to do provided) and he failed to collect some bills due him in the district, the receipt of which would have made him comparatively easy, he placed his property in the hands of a tried friend, Wm. Humphreys of your own county, and determined to go with a party of young men, the very best our country afforded., among whom was a friend of his boyhood, John W. Sharp, who told me, nearly the last thing he said that he was tired of mining and ill luck in this country and now he was going home to try and do something to benefit his mother and sisters. Comer had but one object, everything else was an after consideration and if a commanding figure, noble bearing, a handsome and passionate fact together with an unequaled devotion have anything to do with the game of (drawn picture of a Heart) (Love), he could not have failed.; at least I know the haughty daughters of California could remember his name and appreciate easy for twelve months afterwards on the strength of a mere introduction. Their memories are notoriously short where they are not interested.

His parents will not feel his loss as much as they would have done if they had seen him again. Parents who can train a boy from his infancy so as to make truth and honor the basis of his character, should feel proud that he has lived and died, for in the great hereafter it may not be in vain. His valise was forgotten when he left here and I received a letter the day before requesting me to destroy all the letters in it. I have done so, but among other things is a minature of his Father, Mother and Sister. If they wish it, I will send them to them. Another, somewhat defaced, but resembling one he carried with him, always, enclosed in an account of the attack and result clipped from the Sacramento Union. McBride, who gave the account is well known here and went with them. When any of the party comes back, or when any news comes to light, I will let you hear.

To hear his name mentioned casts a gloom all over the city. To hear him spoken of in company they would all say "We have lost a dear and near friend." Mourning my dear friend's death, I bid you farewell.

Yours,
J. Len Taylor

She lived at 3011 McGee Street, Kansas City, Missouri, at the time of her death. Daughter Leona Davies and family were living at this address in 1919.

Her death certificate was signed by her son, R. Lee Comer, 2736 Gillham Road, Kansas City, Missouri. He knew her father's name, but not her mother's.

Mrs. John Comer, formerly of this city and whose husband was well known as a stock buyer all over the county, died suddenly Friday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leona Davies, of Kansas City where she was making her home, of heart failure. 8159 Mrs. John J. Comer Dead.
Mrs. Betty Comer, aged 74 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leona Davis, in Kansas City, last Friday night of heart failure. Her death was the third in the family since June 1910. Her husband John J. Comer, died in Kansas City, June 16, 1910, a few days after he and Mrs. Comer had returned to that city from a visit in Callaway. The following month, a son, J. Lynn Comer, died at the Fulton State Hospital.
Mrs. Comer, whose maiden name was Overton, was born near Fulton, and after her marriage to Mr. Comer, moved with him to Boydsville, where he was a farmer and stockman for a number of years. They moved to Fulton later and about twenty years ago went to Kansas City to make their home.
Mrs. Comer is survived by one daughter and four sons, Mrs. Leona Davis and Lee, Benjamin, Harry and Grover Comer, all of Kansas City. She was an aunt of Mrs. M.E. Gilbert of Fulton. Funeral services were conducted at Kansas City Sunday and interment occurred in Forest Park cemetery there.

8161 From a post on Rootsweb, I cannot verify it is correct:
Matilda S. "Letta" Overton who married Russell Roberts 7 Jun 1860 in Lewis Co Mo. This family appear on the 1860 Lewis Co MO census and according to the census, Russell Roberts was born ca 1834 in MO. Russell and Letta Roberts were the parents of at least one child, Mary D.Roberts born 1861 in Lewis Co. Then this family also disappears.
In 1880, Mary D Roberts appears on a census in Dallas Co TX, living with her aunt and uncle Sarah E. Overton Givens & George Wm. Givens. Dudley W. Overton and his wife are also living with the Givens family. Both Dudley and his wife died in Dallas Co TX and are buried there. Most of their family can be found in Dallas Co Tx during that time period.
Mary Roberts was mentioned in Dudley Overton's will and was to receive the portion that would have gone to her mother. I can only assume that Mary Roberts parents died before 1880.

I have no verification of this marriage, information was posted on Rootsweb about this family. I only have verification of the census.

From Carol, a Major/Overton descendant (see private notes):
Nancy was born Nov. 18, 1794 and per the Henry Co. Probate records, she died Nov 14, 1873 in Osage City Missouri. On the headstone it states she died 1876 but her son, Reuben W Major, traveled 4 days round trip in Nov 1873 to bring her body back by boat and train to Windsor to be buried by her husband. There are notes regarding the purchase of the casket and the funeral and medical expenses due to her death.

I just know she died in Texas. Oddie spoke of coming back by wagon to MO
In the Callaway Weekly Gazette - Feb.27, 1880: Obit
On February 21st, near Boydsville, Mrs. Permelia Day, wife of Sanders Day, aged about 23, and daughter of B.F. Overton, of Texas.-
From The Fulton Telegraph - Fri - Mar. 5, 1880 Mrs. Amelia Day, wife of Sanders Day, died near Boydsville, on Saturday, Feb. 21, 1880, aged about 25 years. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin F. Overton.
It is possible that Aunt Frances was meaning to write Permelia instead of Pamela. It is spelled in Frances' notebook, Pamelia, but may be 'rn' instead of 'm'. Sonny says she was Frances. That is probably what they called her. However Carol Day says she was Amelia Overton, daughter of Benjamin F. Overton-Callaway Co, MO. Oddie's obit said her name was Elizabeth Overton, probably someone gave her that name because Bessie was named after her. Her name was not Elizabeth. She had a stillborn baby after Oddie, assuming she died in childbirth. I am settling on Permelia because of official papers, also calling her Amelia.

They are buried in Hillcrest in Fulton, Mo. I have photos of his and Elizabeth's grave stones in Hillcrest. Very hard to read the dates, but the names are correct. His death date appears to be 1860 something. There was something I read at the historical society that said Reuben and Elizabeth were buried somewhere else and later moved to Hillcrest when there was construction on the land.

8178 On Sunday, March 7, 1875, Mrs. Sarah F. Baker, wife of Dr. Robert N. Baker, died at his residence in this county, She leaves a stricken husband and an infant child. She was a devoted wife and all sympathize with the bereaved one in this sad hour of their calamity. After an appropriate sermon, preached by the Rev. W.W. Robertson, at the Richland Baptist Church, of which she was a member, her remains were interred at the cemetery at that Church. Mrs. Baker was a daughter of Mr. J.F. Overton, of this county. Thus in the short space of about one month, two deaths have occurred in that family - Mrs. Baker having died January 28. Truly in the midst of life we are in death.
Note: The Mrs. Baker who died in January was Sarah Overton Baker's mother, it should have read Mrs. James Overton, not Mrs. Baker.

In Memoriam. Both the Richland church and the family of the deceased have been deeply afflicted in the death of Mrs. Harriet Blackwell Overton, wife of James L. Overton, and Mrs. Dr. R.N. Mrs. James Overton was born on the 16th of May, 1809 and died on the 28th of January 1875 - Scarcely, however, had the grave been closed over her form when the iron hand of death fastened it's grasp on her daughter, the young and affectionate wife of Dr. Baker - she was married to Dr. Baker in Oct. 1873 and died on the 7th of March, 1875.
