From the History of Callaway County Missouri 1884 book, which is not always accurate:
His second wife was previously Miss Anna E. Overton, of Callaway county, but originally from Woodford county, Kentucky. She died, leaving him five children: Sarah E. (deceased), John D., Andrew J. (deceased), Mary E. (deceased) and Benjamin F. | Ann E. Overton

Benjamin was a popular and prosperous man who bore the dubious distinction of having the first skirmish of the Civil War in Callaway County fought on his farm. It was known as the Battle of Overton's Run because after the first shots were fired, the Callawegians "ran" not for cover, but for home! Overton's Run, July 17, 1861. He owned a lot of land, and toward his later years he was quite a cattle farmer.
-----------------------
The Annice on the 1870 census is a puzzle. I'd guess it's daugher Lavinia.... except the age is 2 years off and the census says born in Tenn. His second wife was born in Tenn, but this is not her (age 23) and if it was a sister of hers come to take care of the babies.... did he marry her? He was 59, she was 23. It would appear that Benjamin's second wife died between 1868 and 1870.
On 1860 census, property valued at $10,000, personal property at $8,000
I can't find any of them on 1880.....
His newspaper obit gives totally different dates than what Pat has...Benjamin F. Overton 23 May 1813 20 Jun 1881 Fulton Telegraph, Callaway Weekly Gazette These dates make more sense. I have a picture of him that was taken in Tarrant Co. Texas probably in the late 1870's.
obit - Callaway Weekly Gazette, July 15, 1881

He is not listed with his family on the 1870 census, he would have been 3 years old at that time. He is listed on 1880, 13 years old, son, farm labor, however he is listed out of order, after his sisters. I wonder if maybe he was adopted.

Death of Jas. W. Overton - Another venerable and useful citizen of Callaway county has taken his departure - Mr. Overton was born in Kentucky, Sept 26, 1806, married Miss Mildred Guthrie in 1826 and moved from Kentucky to Missouri in 1827. The year after his arrival in this State he had the misfortune to lose his wife. In 1831, he married Miss Harriet Blackwell Baynham, sister of the late Charles and Grief Baynham. His second wife also preceeded him by a few years to the land of glory. One brother, Dudley Overton of St. Louis county, one sister, Mrs. Martha Farmer of Ceder City, and two children, John L. Overton and Mrs. Mary Overton, are the immediate family.
note: he was born in Virginia not Kentucky as obit states. | James F. Overton

From her husband's obituary in 1912:
He was twice married, the first time to a Miss Overton, of Palmyra. She is buried here and he was buried by the side of her.
I have seen her headstone in Hillcrest. It was broken and cemented back together, but the break was right along the line that gave the year, month and days that would give her exact birth date. Date of death is readable.
