8066 Margaret Marie Herring passed away March 2, 2008. She was born August 5, 1927, the daughter of Walter and Rosa Mae O'Neal. After graduating from Fulton High School, Margaret worked at the Fulton telephone office until she married Paul K. Herring in December of 1945.
The two worked together to build Herring Construction and Excavation, a company that flourished for more than fifty years. Margaret was an integral part of the business as the bookkeeper, accountant, and general creator of order. She ran the business herself for several years after the death of her husband in 2000. In 2006, to be closer to her family, Margaret moved from Fulton to Springfield, Missouri, where she resided at Creekside at Elfindale. There she made some new friends, enjoyed occasional lunches with her neighbors, as well as the comings-and-goings of the geese.
Those fortunate enough to have known Margaret will remember her for her practical wisdom, her strength, kindness, and her generosity. She loved traveling, crappie fishing, laughing, and just being with her loved ones. By example, she taught us patience when we thought all patience was exhausted, and she taught us forgiveness when we had forgotten how to forgive. She leaves a tremendous space in our lives, one that will be lessened only by the love and memories she gave us.
Preceding her in death were her parents, and her husband, a daughter, Carolyn Portell; a brother, Hoxsey O'Neal, and a grandson, Paul Leroy Herring. She is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Betty O'Neal of Fulton, and Ralph and Jo Ann O'Neal of Orlando, Florida, as well as a brother-in-law and sister-in-law,Walter (Chic) and Vivian Herring of Fulton, and sister-in-law Ruby O'Neal of Fort Myers, Florida; daughters and sons-in-law, Katie and Jim Stafford, and Sue Herring and James Frink, all of Springfield, and step-daughter Wanda Patterson of Fort Myers, Florida. Grandchildren include Neal Stafford and his wife, Sarah; Maggie Stafford and her fianc? Stephen Muller; Kenneth Doerhoff, Kevin Portell, and Perry Herring. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond.
A special thank you to nephew Larry O'Neal and long-time friend Richard Kemp, and to all of the friends who helped make Mom's life easier over the past few years. The funeral will be at Debo Funeral Home in Fulton, Missouri, at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8th with visitation from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 7th. Memorial contributions may be made to Otterbein Methodist Church in Fulton.
