*******************************
Samuel was a tanner. He and his brother John had visited Fairfax Co VA by 1730. Samuel returned to Bucks Co, where he married Mary Downey 25 August 1737. The couple had several children and then Samuel did something that was very contrary to Quaker ideals: he left his family and went to fight in the Spanish Wars. That was sufficient grounds for divorce, and Mary was granted a divorce. Samuel was back in Fairfax Co by 1742, when he witnessed a deed from his brother John Mead to Richard Poulney. He married Margaret 10 Mar 1746 in Fairfax Co. In Aug 1747 Margaret produced a certificate of transfer from Falls Monthly Meeting in Bucks Co, PA to Fairfax Monthly Meeting. In 1759 Samuel was disowned for disunity, at the request of Falls Monthly Meeting. In 1761 he patented land at Kittockton Mountain, then moved to Salem Co, NJ. On 25 May 1767 Margaret Mead, wife of Samuel, and her children were received at Salem Monthly Meeting on a certificate of removal from Fairfax Monthly Meeting, Samuel died at Salem NJ in 1784, leaving no will.
[Another report that gave records of Quaker Monthly Meeting said he died before June 12, 1787] Also - same researcher said he married May 25 1734 - Bucks Co, PA]

7493 He was a farmer and could write his own name.

Absolom has no proven connection to earlier Meltons. His first record was 1 Mar 1770, when he patented 263A at Amos Creek in Bedford Co. In 1776 he purchased 200A at Button Creek in, then sold the parcel in 1778. In 1779 he purchased 404A at Goose Creek, and in 1784 he and his wife Ann sold 15A at Goose Creek. In 1886 Absolom Melton and Elizabeth Mead conveyed 163A at Amos Creek*. He also held land in Grayson Co VA. In the 1787 tax list for Bedford Co, Absolom had 1 male 16-20, 3 horses and 9 cattle. Absolom made his will 13 Jan 1804, in which he named his wife and children [except John]. The will was probated 23 Sep 1805 at Bedford Co.
Richard may have been Absolom's father - they were neighbors at Goose Creek, and the tax records show Richard as not tithable in 1787 [old age being the most common reason for being untithable]. Richard's first record in Bedford Co was in Aug 1779 when he sold a small parcel. On 27 Sep 1779 he made a gift of deed for 211A at Goose Creek to his son, William Melton, another gift of deed for 40A at Goose Creek to his son John Melton, and the same day Absolom Melton peushased 404A at Goose Creek. In 1783 Richard purchased 100A at Goose Creek, and in 1784 he purchased another 200A at Goose Creek. The same adjacent neighbors were mentioned in Richard's and Absolom's deeds. On 22 Feb 1796 Richard Melton and his wife Mary sold 44A at Cotton Patch Branch. In the 1787 Bedford Co Tax List, Richard had 3 horses and 9 cattle, wasn't tithable, and was visited on the same day as Absolom. Known children of Richard and Mary were: William, who married Mary, and John.

Speculation: Absalom had a sister Elizabeth who married a Wilks. See land transaction 1786 below. Possibly land was inherited by them from relative?

In the same Will Book, starting near the bottom of page 111 and continuing to a little past the middle of page 112, is an appraisal of Absalom's estate. The interesting thing about this is that it is dated February 12th, 1806, and follows an entry dated February 24th, 1806, and is a copy of a communication from Grayson County, Va. In other words, Absalom was living in Grayson County when he died, although he still had property in Bedford Co.
