Just an additional puzzle piece -
we believe (not fully proven yet) that Hester Maxey was a daughter of Jesse - born sometime in the early 1770's. Hester Maxey married Henry Wilkey - their oldest being Bennett Maxey Wilkey b. 1793 - who fathered 18 or so children in Moores Prairie Twp., Jefferson Co., IL. Hester came to Illinois - and probably was one of the reasons the
other MAXEY's came there -- she was there in 1816.

Virginia Black File:
Jesse was wounded while traveling along the road near Asher's Station. Seeing that escape by flight was impossible, he fell face downward on the ground. His pursuers came up, scalped him, thrust a hunting knife into his throat and left him to die. We was found by his friends, carried into the fort and nursed back to life. 1788 Gallatin Tennessee.

Jesse lived another 20 years but received his nourishment through an opening in his throat, as the scar tissue which formed over his esophagus prevented him from swallowing properly. He was a tall, light complexioned man weighing at least 200 pounds, but later became very bent and thin as the result of his disability. He is buried at Douglas cemetery, three miles north of Gallatin, Tennessee.

Walter Maxey, son of Edward and Susannah, was born in Virginia. By his father's will he received, after his mother's death, half of the land on which they lived in Goochland County, Virginia. This part of Goochland later became part of Cumberland County. There is a deed dated 12 April 1748 in Goochland County, Book 5/400-401 by which his brother, Silvanus, conveyed to Walter the remaining 200 acres of land. It reads as follows:

A 1727 will of another Edward is in Henrico County (I have not yet found it). A Ms. Clark has a story that Walter moved from Cumberland County to Bedford County (in part that became Franklin County in 1785) because his honor had been called into question by the parish. It seems he had neglected to name son Walter Jr. (16 years old) as a tithable. A suit was begun against the father 28 June 1762; he did not contest it (that would have entailed taking a stand against the King) and was fined 50 pounds of tobacco for the use of Southam parish. (I have not checked records for this suit.)

The last record I have been able to locate concerning Walter is his will in?Franklin County, Will Book 1, pp. 69-70.

According to The Maxey's of Virginia Vol. 2, the following letter appeared
in the Maxey Family Reunion Bulletin in 1961 and was written by Mae A. Maxey
of Hardy Virginia, now deceased:

"The Maxey Cemetery containing the unmarked graves of Wal Maxey, Sr. who
died in 1791 and near kin....is located on the old Maxey Plantation on a
sloping hillside overlooking the Blackwater River in Franklin Co., Va. Their
remains are to be removed and reinterred on a plot at Mt. Ivy Baptist Church
which is a very fitting location as it is in the general vicinity in which
they lived and died and more accessible to travel. Their peaceful slumbers
are being interrupted by the rising waters of Smith Mountain Lake formed by a
dam that is being constructed a few miles below by Appalachian Power Company.
All expense of plot, removal and reinterment is being taken care of by the
power company. Descendants of this brave and courageous tribe of Maxey's are
scattered in many states now and a few in foreign countries."

The Wal Maxey that Mae refers to was Walter Maxey, the last surviving child
of Edward and Susannah Maxey, the Progenitors of the Maxey's.

That is the reason that the reunion is held at the Dam each year.

7298 From the History of Callaway County Missouri, published in 1884, which is not always accurate:
Harry May settled on May's Prairie, in Callaway county, in 1820, where he built a horse mill and opened a race track. The race track became a place of note, and a great many races were run upon it. On a certain occasion, the Willinghams and Kilgores, of Audrain county, borrowed Sanford Jameson's fine race nag, James, filled her mane and tail full of sheep-burs, and took her to May's race track, to run against a crack pony, known as Nick Biddle, which had been brought from Kentucky, by Thomas, David and Singleton Shehan. The mare presented such a poor appearance with the burs in her mane and tail, that the bets were all in favor of the pony, and nearly every one present staked some money on the favorite. Colonel Jeff. Jones, who was a boy then, was there with $7.50 in his pocket, and he bet $5.00 of his money on the pony. When the race came off, the mare beat the pony 250 yards in a run of 600, and there were some pretty long faces in the crowd that witnessed the result. Mr. Jameson after- ward sold his little mare to a gentleman from Louisiana, for a large sum of money, and the latter won $80,000 with her, while he had her. She made the fastest time on record in the United States, in a race of 600 yards. Mr. May's children were Gabriel, Hannah (Mrs. Joseph Sitten), Frances (Mrs. Stewart), Susan (Mrs. Crump), Matilda (Mrs. Robert Arm), Richard, John and Harry, Jr.

This land eventually became Fulton's airport.
