6621 Alt Birth: 1753 Amherst Co., Virginia

Came to Callaway Co. in 1831 at the age of 78 per Pioneers of Missouri book.

The following is from the Pioneer Families of Missouri book written in 1876, which is not always accurate:
"KEY, George Key served in the Rev. war 4 years. He afterward married SUSANNAH CRAIGHEAD, of Franklin Co., VA., and in 1831, at the age of 78 years, he came to MO., and settled in Callaway Co. His children were George T., Martin, Susan, Jerusha, Adonijah, Arphaxad, and Joanna. Jerusha married WALTER KEMP, and settled in Callaway Co. in 1831. Joanna married ALBERT AGEE, who settled in Callaway Co. in 1830."

George and Susannah (Craighead) Key probably lived on the south side of Blackwater River in Bedford County, Virginia on 100 acres of land which John Craighead gave to George Key in 1786. In 1809 John and Robert Craighead, executors of John Craighead, deceased, of Franklin and Bedford Counties, sold to George Key 106 acres on the north side of Blackwater River. In 1829, George Key gave his four children, "Joanna Agee, Derusha Kemp, Susan Key and Martin Key" all of his property except the tract of land on which he dwelt. The later he gave to his son, Martin.

George and Susannah Key and a number of their children moved to Missouri in 1831 and settled in Callaway County, where he died January 15, 1836, and she sometime after 1840.

Jerusha Key

6628 1758 - living in Albemarle Co.; 1764 - living in Amherst Co.

In 1758, John Key, Jr. III, was living in Albemarle County on his father's 1732 patent, which had been divided between "Martin Key and his younger brother John Key." By 1764 John Key, Jr., had moved to Amherst County (now Nelson County) where he purchased 71 acres from his brother Henry. In 1765 he patented 190 acres in the same area. He bought and sold land in Amherst County until 1777 when he disposed of what was probably the last of his holdings there. In 1777 he was appointed a road surveyor in Amherst County. From Amherst Co., John Key (Jr. was not used after 1777) apparently moved to Bedford County, Virginia. where he was listed in the tax records from 1782 to 1789. In 1783 he purchased 440 acres on the Stauton River (upper Roanoke River) in Southern Bedford, which land he and his wife disposed of in 1788.

John Key's wagon and team was employed in the service of the United States four days, for which he was allowed 10 shillings per day, June 23, 1783 in Bedford Co., Va. He was paid for wagon and use furnished the Continental Army, December 1, 1783 in Bedford Co., VA.

John and Agnes Key, Jr. sold property in Amherst County to John Craighead, who became George Key's father-in-law.

It should be noted that Nelson Co., was created in 1808 from the eastern part of Amherst Co., VA.

JOHN KEY, JR. III, (1731-1790), a son of John Key, Jr./Sr. (1716-1780) and Miss Waller, (Some show Susannah Watts as the moher of John Key, Jr. III. Records show that John Key, Jr./Sr. married 1st Miss Waller and 2nd Susannah Watts). John Key, Jr. III was born about 1731 and died about 1790 in Virginia. He was married to Agnes Witt on December 27, 1750 in Albemarle County, Virginia. In 1758, he was living in Albemarle County on his father's 1732 patent which had been divided between "Martin Key and his younger brother John Key." By 1764 John Key, Jr., had moved to Amherst County (now Nelson County, Virginia) where he purchased 71 acres of land from his brother Henry Key. In 1765, John patented 190 acres in the same area. He bought and sold land in Amherst County until 1777, when he disposed of what was probably the last of his holdings there. In 1777, John Key, Jr.III, was appointed a road surveyor in Amherst County. He moved from Amherst County to Bedford County Virginia, where he was listed in the tax records from 1782 to 1789. In 1783. He purchased 440 acres of land on the Stauton River (upper Roanoke River) in southern Bedford County. This 440 acres of land was disposed of in 1788.
John Key, Jr, III

6629 From the book:
Albemarle County in Virginia
By Edgar Woods
Published by the Michie Company, Printers, Charlottesville, Va., 1901
Preface to book written July 1st, 1900.
John Key was one of the pioneers who fixed their abodes within the present limits of the county. He made his first entry of land in 1732, and up to 1741 had obtained patents for nearly twelve hundred acres on the west side of the South West Mountain. His home was where William W. Monor now resides (1900). His children were Martin, John,m and Mary (the wife of a Dalton). Martin suceeded to the home and estate of his father.
John Key, Sr

6630 He served in the French and Indian War. John died in Albemarle County, Virginia about 1780. After John's death, Susannah lived in Amherst Co., Va., as shown in the 1795 census.

The first record of John Key, Jr/Sr., in Amherst County, Virginia, was in 1768, when Henry Key undertook (acted as surety) for him in a lawsuit. Also in 1768, he deeded his personal estate to his "present wife Susannah" and her children, which indicated that he had been married previously. Amherst County records show that John Key, Sr., and the two witnesses to his 1768 deed poll were closely associated with Henry Key and John Key, Jr. One of the witnesses, William Hansbrough, lived near Henry Key, John Key, Jr. and James Nevill, in the Glades of old Amherst County and was the father-in-law of William Key, a witness with Henry Key and John Key, Jr. to Amherst County deeds in 1770 and 1772. The last record of John Key, Sr., was in 1769 when he initiated a lawsuit in Amherst County Chancery Court. James Nevill was re appointed sheriff in Amherst County in 1765.

Susannah Key paid taxes on 100 acres in Amherst County, Virginia in 1783 and 1787. She is listed in the enumerations of Amherst County for 1783 and 1785 as the head of a family of nine and in the personal property tax lists for the Amherst District. The personal property tax lists for 1788 and 1794 show that she was the mother of Dabney and Thomas Key. Dabney was probably born about 1767, based on his first Talley in the "over 21" column of the tax lists.

Susannah Key's maiden name is said to have been Watts - - possibly the Watts family of Spotsylvania and Albemarle counties, which has many gaps in its genealogy. Edward Watts (ca. 1675 - ca. 1750) patented land in St. George's Parish, Spotsylvania County, 1728, and left issue: Thomas (1695 - 1749), Edward (ca. 1698 - ca. 1760), David (1702 - 1767), William (1704 - 1760), and John (1710 - 1765). David Watts was a neighbor of John Key, Sr. of Albemarle County and owned adjoining land in that part of Louisa County which became Albemarle in 1761.

John Key, Jr/Sr

6631 Name: John Key
Sex: M
Birth: 11 JUL 1630 in Settrington, East Riding, Yorkshire England
Death: in Charles City, Virginia
Note:
John Key, was born July 11, 1630 in Settrington, East Riding, Yorkshire, England according to the Registry p.35. He died in Charles City, Virginia. He married Elizabeth -- -?---.

There was a ten-year hiatus in the Parish register just prior to John coming to America. Three of his known children did not accompany him to America, but that was the time of the bubonic plague in England, and many children died, evidence of which is contained in the Parish Register. John and Edmund were granted land on arrival in America, 50 acres for each individual in the family, including children. Their land was in Charles City county, VA on the South side of James River, the area later becoming Prince George's county. Mary, daughter of Edmund, married John Waller III and their descendants lived alongside John's descendants for three generations along the Mataponie River in New Kent Co., later King William Co., then Spotsylvania Co.
The source for this information was Cavaliers & Pioneers, Patent Bk 6 p.35 (arrival in America), p.146 John, and his brother, Edmund, are listed with the names of their families.

Dr. Gene Key states that there is some confusion about the parents of the children of Edmund and John. It seems that Mary is assigned to Edmund by all the sources I've found. The other known children are assigned to John. According to Dr. Key "None of the children except Mary and John Jr. are shown as having descendants in this work, therefore the matter of which children belonged to which brother does not impact on the contents herein. The children have been diligently researched with no success at this time."

John and Edmund were granted land in Charles City County, VA when they arrived in America. The existing measure was 50 acres per person, including children. The granted land on the south side of the James River, that area later became Prince George's County. That area later become Prince

George's county. Mary, daughter of Edmund, married John Waller III in England and immigrated to America around the same time as John Key. They and their descendents lived alongside John's descendents for three generations along the Mataponie River in New Kent County, later King William County and ultimately Spotsylvania County.

Martin Key

6637 From the book:
Albemarle County in Virginia
Martin suceeded to the home and estate of his father, and by repeated purchases became the owner of all the land reaching from Edgemont, the place of the late Henry Magruder, down to the bend of the river on the farm of the late R.F Omohundro. He died in 1791. He and his wife Ann had twelve children; Thomas, John, Martin, Tandy, Joshua, William Bibb, Henry, Jesse, James, Walter, Elizabeth (the wife of James Daniel) and Martha (the wife of John White). Each of the sons was comfortably provided for by their father's will, though intimations are there given that the habits of some unfitted them for the proper management of their affairs.
Within the first score of years in the present century, the members of this household were for the most part scattered over the South and West. Thomas removed to South Carolina, where he invented some contrivance for the more effective action of water wheels. The families of John, James and Martha emigrated to Kentucky and Tennessee,m and that of Elizabeth, to North Carolina. Tandy lived for many years in the southern part of the county near Covesville, but is said to have removed eventually to Fluvanna County. Jesse P., a son of Tandy, married Sarah,m daughter of the younger William Woods, of Beaver Creek, and lived for some time near Mechum's Depot. William Bibb married Mourning, daughter of Christopher Clark, and went to Elbert County, Georgia. Henry settled in Bedford County and Jesse died in Richmond in 1826. Walter appears to have been the only one who spent his whole life in the countym and his death occurred in 1834. John, Tandy, and Joshua were all magistrates of the county, and Walter was appointed to the office, but declined to accept. John served as Sheriff in 1795, and Tandy in 1809. John was an Ensign in the Eighth Virginia, and Henry a soldier in the army of the Revolution.

6638 Name: Martin Key I
Sex: M
Birth: ABT 1670 in Poss. Oxfordshire, England
Death: ABT 1706 in Goochland Co., Va OR King William Co., Va
Note:
Martin Key, was born about 1670 in Oxfordshire, England, and died before 1705 in King William County, Virginia according to Cavaliers and Pioneers Bk 10 p. 164. He married Elizabeth ---?---.

By referring to Virginia Patent Book 8, p. 43, we find Martin Palmer gave 489 acres to Martin Key. There is no doubt that this is the Martin Key of 1670. It is proper to assume that this is the father of the orphans John and Martin Key in 1706. Family Historians have traditionally suggested that Martin Key of 1670 died at an early age. This is also suggested by the fact that Martin Palmer provided in his will for his young grandson, John Key in 1702.

===

On April 21, 1681 Major Martin Palmer, grandfather to Martin Key and Mr. John Hume gave him 489 acres of land in New Kent County, Saint George's Parish, Virginia. The following information regard this action was recorded in Patent Book 8 on page 43. The land is described as "surplus land within Captain Joseph Croshaw's pattent (sic) and granted to Mr. George Chapman, who conveyed it to said Palmer and Hughes; beginning by Woodward's Road; along John Ford, and said Key, to the maine (sic) Swamp of Cohoacke; corner of the Gleab Land etc." Martin was 11 years old when this "deed of guift (sic)" was granted.

Apparently, Martin and his wife, Elizabeth Ford died before April 29, 1706 leaving two sons, Martin and John orphans. They were under the guardianship of William Ford (Was he her father or her brother?). In English law granted land can revert back to the grantor if there are no clear heirs to the grantee. This process is called escheat. In Patent Book 10 on page 316 there is an entry dated December 16, 1714 (one wonders if the year shouldn't be 1704) in which 1500 acres of land escheated from John Humes is in dispute. Actually only 470 acres of it is covered by the entry. It appears that Ambrose Lipscom in behalf of his children: Richard Ambrose, William, John, Mary and Benjamin Lipscom petitioned for possession of that escheat land. The entry also mentions that William Noyes and his wife, Elizabeth; William Holliday; John Ford; John Green; John and martin Key, orphans represented by their guardian, William Ford were opposed to this action. There was a hearing in the General Court on April 29, 1706. 470 acres described as being in "King William County between a branch of the Cohoke Swamp and the main road, a little below the Court House; beginning in Markhams line , by Beckleys old field; on Timber Branch; corner of John Green" was awarded to the opposition. The interesting point of all this is that we see Martin and John described as orphans (and probably brothers) both under the age of 21 (otherwise they could have stood in the Court for themselves).

Dr. Gene Key discussing the relationship between Jan and Martin: "It has been suggested that Martin Key was a brother to John Key who married Martha Tandy. Dr. Marcus M. Key has given compelling evidence to suggest this idea as referenced by Virginia Patent Book 10, p. 316. Here, John and Martin Key are presented as orphan brothers with William Ford being their guardian. This was in reference to a 1714 patent in which reference was made to a 1706 escheatment action in King William County, Virginia. It should be noted that it is only postulation say that this John and Martin Key are sons of Martin Key of 1670. Dr. Marcus Key evidently believes that the evidence is compelling enough to make that assertion. I believe the evidence does warrant such a conclusion also. Martin Palmer gave 489 acres to Martin Key (Virginia Patent Book 8, p. 43). There is no doubt that this is the Martin Key of 1670. It is proper to assume that this is the father of the orphans John and Martin Key in 1706. Family Historians have traditionally suggested that Martin Key of 1670 died at an early age. This is also suggested by the fact that Martin Palmer provided in his will for his young grandson, John Key in 1702."

In The Official history of Elbert County 1790-1935 the compiler states that John Key (probably Martin Key b. 1670) came to America with William Penn. This statement is some what of a 'family legend' for which I have found no proof.
Martin Key, I

6639 There are references in LDS and online that his wife was Malvina. I have found a Martin Key married to Malvina in the Census that show this Martin Key is probably the father of the Martin Key who married Malvina, unless all the information on his birth is incorrect and he was born 20 years later. I find this doubtful due to the age of his mother.

Estate filed Oct. 21, 1850, heirs named: James Key, Martin Key, and the widow (no name given) - from the Cra(i)ghead Book.

R.P. Key, of Mexico, 63 years old, died of paralysis Monday evening at the home of John E. Tincher, just east of Hatton. He was driver of a poultry wagon which made regular trips in north Callaway, and was stricken with paralysis at Mr. Tincher's gate, six days before his death. Burial took place at Richland Christian church Wednesday.
Mr. Key was born in Callaway county and lived here until seventeen years ago. His wife, who survives him, was a daughter of the late Jacob Crowson, of this county. Two children are living, namely: Roy Key, of Keytesville, and Mrs. Mattie Striver, of Oklahoma.

This must be a mistake in the transcription of record. His obit states that his wife was a daughter of Jacob Crowson, Cowan.

Death Certificate spells middle name as Paine, headstone as Payne.
Death Certificate gives date of birth as Feb. 19, 1850, headstone as 1848. In 1850 census he is listed as being 4 months old, which would lend credence to the death certificate listing of birth year. Obituary says he was 63 years old when he died in 1913.

6647 William Key, died June 23, 1563 in Skagelthorpe, East Riding Yorkshire, England according to the Registry of Setrington Parish, Yorkshire, England 1559-1812 p.49

William died in Skagelthorpe, a village about 2 miles north of Settrington, but was buried in Settrington Parish cemetery. There is no proof he was the father of the Keys in Settrington, only circumstantial evidence.

(Further references to the "Registry" will mean "The Registry of the Parish of Settrington 1559-1812" transcribed and edited by Francis Collins Knight and Forster Ltd., Printers, Leeds 1910).

One source has William as the grandfather of Nicholas, fitting George (b 1541) in between.

From time to time, there is discussion about John and Martha Tandy Key. His father was Martin Key B. abt 1670 and an Elizabeth (last name unknown) although I believe it to be Ford or Buford with very good reason. Most people mistakenly say that Martin Key, Sr. was married to Mary Palmer when in reality she was his mother. I am posting a rather long posting here which I generally do not do, but I feel it is very important that I do so. It takes the ancestorage of John Key back to abt. 1500 AD in Yorkshire County, England where I believe they were located as early as 1068 AD also with good reason. Any way, there are plenty of good discussions herein which I may talk about if some one twists my arm just a little bit.
Above is from a posting on genforum, not my work.
William Key

6648 His parents probably died before 1860.
In the 1860 census, he was 14 years old, living with a John W. Davis family, and he had $3,000 worth of property and $3,000 worth of personal income. I can't find his father or his brother on the census in 1860. The property and income would indicate that his father had died and he was the sole heir. I believe the Elizabeth Davis is his mother, the three younges children in the house his step-siblings.

6649 Auxvasse Review
ALBERT BOGGS KIDWELL DEAD

Albert Boggs Kidwell, one of the best known men in Jackson Township, died at his home five miles northeast of Auxvasse, Monday morning, November 13, 1911, after a long and painful illness of cancer of the stomach and bowels.

He was a son of W. R. and Mary Wheeler Kidwell, and was born at Williamsburg, Callaway County, Missouri, September 14, 1849, being 62 years and 2 months of age at the time of his death.

He was married to Miss Mollie Givens, daughter of David R. Givens, who was killed at his home by Federal troops during the war, who survives him. To this union three children were born. They are Eugene Campbell and Lewis Kidwell and Mrs. Lillian Rose Hamilton, all living in this vicinity. In 1877 he purchased the Dishman farm of 330 acres on which he lived until death called him home. He was a member of the Auxvasse Methodist church and was numbered among our very best citizens and will be sadly missed by his family, relatives and friends. He was a kind and indulgent father, a devoted husband and an excellent neighbor.

Besides his wife and three children he leaves six sisters and two brothers to mourn his death They are Mesdames George Yates; Mary W. Gilbert, C. A. McCue, D. Hunter, Chas, R. Adams and John Yates and William Z. and Randolph Kidwell.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. B. A. McKnight after which the remains were laid to rest in the Martin Graveyard, south of Auxvasse.
