1900 census has him born in 1891. This cannot possibly be correct, I have a picture of him and he is way older than that. His younger sister in the picture is a child and he is not, yet the census shows her being born the year before he was. I also have a picture of his headstone giving the date of birth as 1877, which fits the picture.
1910 census, age is now 32

From the Cra(i)ghead book:
By close figuring, and careful comparison of dates in records of their descendants, and assuming that the children are listed in their birth order, we arrive at the probably birthyears of this couple as c. 1740 and 1743 respectively. They could have been older.
John Kemp appears in Franklin C., Va. Court records a number of times, 1786 to 1789, as member of the jury. In May, 1787, he signed a securety note for Richard Robertson, who later became his son-in-law. He was witness to a suit: Hale vs. Craghead, 1788, and was sued once himself, by Callaway & Co., but that suit was dismissed by order of plaintiff on May 5, 1789.

*************************
In the 1850 census for Callaway County, John Kemp is listed with his second wife Elizabeth Smith nee Woods, whom he had married in 1841. They are living next to John's son Dudley Kemp and three households from John's daughter Mary "Polly" Kemp Smith.
At the 1846 July Term of the Supreme Court of Missouri, a case concerning Elizabeth S. Smith Kemp nee Wood's slave named Sophia revealed that Elizabeth's first husband Samuel Smith died in Warren County, Missouri in 1840, that she was his second wife, they had no children, and her slave Sophia was received from the estate of her deceased father, name not given. Her marriage to Samuel Smith in 1828 occurred in Franklin County, Virginia, and shows her maiden name was Woods. John Kemp's marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Smith nee Woods was recorded in Warren County, Missouri in 1841. Samuel Smith was the older brother of William H. Smith whose wife Mary "Polly" Kemp was the daughter of John Kemp and Fannie Dudley.
The inventory of John Kemp's estate listed a Negro woman named Sophia age 40. On August 14, 1856 in Callaway County, his widow Elizabeth S. Smith Kemp nee Woods married a third time to Michael Gilbert, Jr. who died shortly thereafter. By the 1860 census she was 70 years old and living with John Kemp's son Dudley Kemp in Callaway County under her former name of E. S. Kemp. In the 1860 slave census for Callaway County, Elizabeth S. Kemp is listed with a female slave age 45, a male slave age 18, and a female slave age 6. Samuel Smith's probate record in Warren County shows that his widow Elizabeth S. owned a Negro woman Sophia, a Negro boy Armstead, a Negro girl Francis, and a Negro boy James.
Elizabeth S. Smith Kemp Gilbert nee Woods died between August 1865, the date her will was written, and October 1865, the date her will was probated. Included in her probate file was a bill for William Kemp boarding her from October 19, 1864 to May 27, 1865, which was submitted by William Kemp's son Thomas G. Kemp. Also submitted on December 22, 1867 was a bill for services rendered to Elizabeth S. Gilbert by Sophia Kemp from January 1, to May 1, 1865 and witnessed by Thomas G. Kemp and Spencer Kemp. The black marriages for Callaway County reflect that Spencer Kemp had married Sophia Kemp on January 21, 1866. | John Kemp

Ages of children are a bit confusing. In the Cra(i)ghead book, they are listed this way:
Price, b. Jan 17, 1870
Charlie Mordecai, b. Dec. 5, 1871
Virginia Kathryn, b. Apr. 23, 1872
Mary Mollie Lee, b. Sept. 21, 1874
Obviously Charlie was not born 4 1/2 months before Virginia, and Mollie was not born 7 months after her mother died. The census for 1870 shows Mollie being born abt. 1867, and Rose born abt 1869. I think Rose P. is Price, she went by the name Price as an adult. Virginia and Rose being confused in ages in 1880 is a mistake that shows up on many census years for many people, the ages are not always assigned to the right child. I am using the census ages for this, as I think they are probably more correct than the Cra(i)ghead book.
His death certificate said he was buried in Bachelor, Missouri. | John Dickerson Kemp

Murder of Father And Son
John W. and George Kemp, Former Callawegians, Shot by Insane Rancher in Montana.
John W. Kemp, 63 years old, and his son, George Kemp, 38 years old, former residnets of Callaway county, were murdered on a ranch near Miles City, Mont., on March 28 by a man named J.A. Stacey, who then killed himself. The Kemps lived near Yucatan, this county, before they moved West about thirty years ago.
Stacey, it is believed, was insane. He had lived on a ranch byhimself for 22 years and for sometime before the murders and sucide had appeared to be unbalanced. The Kemps were engaged in hauling hay for him when they were killed. After they ahd been shot, Stacey went into his house and killed himself. The bodies were not found until the next day.
Stacey was a one-armed man and used a rifle to kill the Kemps and himself. The indications at the scene of the crime were that he shot the younger man first and then the elder. Apparently he was fifteen feet from George Kemp when he fired. Subsequently he fired a shot into the temples of both of the Kemps.
The Kemps were buried at Miles City, the Freemasons being in charge of the rites for the father. He joined the order while a resident of this county. The younger Kemp is survived by a wife. A son and brother, Dockery Kemp, lives at Miles City.
The murdered men have many relatives in this county and are remembered by the older citizens of the eastern part of Callaway. | John W. Kemp
