My dear Aunt:
I have been thinking of writing to you for a long while; but it seemed I could never find an opportunity. We have had so much sickness in the neighborhood, and our teacher got sick and I had to take his place for a while. So one thing after another would hinder, until this eve I was determined I would no longer put it off. My chief object in writing is to let you know of Grandma's sickness, which I know will be sad news for you. She is very bad and the Dr. came yesterday
Page 2
said that she might not live any longer than two or three day's and might last a week or two. She has something like a cancer (I suppose is a cancer on her right breast. has been there ever since 1st of June. We have all been doing every thing in out power for her. I wish it was so that you and Uncle could come. She is getting weaker every hour.
Old Mr. Wise died Friday morn Nov. 21st. He was sick for several weeks. Was 87 a few days before his death.
There has also been several deaths caused by dyptheria. and several children are now sick with it in this immediate neighborhood.
Page 3
Aunt Em Hansard is with Grandma and we look for Aunt Kittie this eve. As time forbids further writing I must close. I hope that you and Uncle are enjoying good health. Please write to us soon. I will write again.
In Haste
Your loving niece
Fannie H.

5562 See the notes under the mother of Sarah E. Guthrie for the 1880 Callaway Co., MO census. Henry is then living with his grandmother. In Samuel T. Guthrie's will, 24 April, 1872, Henry S. Holman is listed as an heir of Samuel's daughter S.E. Guthrie and was allocated $170.00 D.B. Guthrie was appointed his guardian, seeing as how Henry was underage. Birthdate comes from a letter Henry's father, William H. Holman sent to his sister Mary R. (Holman) Caldwell.

In a letter written Nov. 20, 1880 from William H. Holman to his sister Mary R. Caldwell, he says this about Henry.
"Henry is teaching school at Guthrie this being the name of the place or Town created there on the rail road they have two or three stores a black smith shop depo church Flour mill and school house Henry has 80 scholars and gets $75.00 per month he has an assistunt Mother Guthrie keeps well as usual"

Mary's stone in the Coop Prairie Cemetery, Mansfield, Sebastion County Arkansas says this:
OUR MOTHER
AT REST
MARY RENNICK HOLMAN
BORN DEC.31, 1820, MARRIED TO ROBT.A.CALDWELL
JULY 25, 1838, ENTERED HER ETERNAL REST,
JULY 6, 1900 IN HER 80th YEAR

Whether her generation spelled their name Holman or Holeman is an issue. Her middle name has been an issue among some in the family who thought it was Rebecca. I have only seen one thing where Mary, herself, wrote her middle name. Below is the transcription of a writing where Mary signs her middle name. It appears not to be a letter, but more likely a clarification or interpretation of the words written in a Jan. 2, 1870 letter and penciled on the outside of the Jan.4, 1870 envelope to Mrs. Mary R. Caldwell from her father and stepmother, Henry and Nancy Holeman.

I have a lock of her hair given to me by my aunt Hattie. It is wrapped in an old piece of newspaper that has a date, Dec 1869 on it. It is a very pretty blond and straight. TM Short II.

Nov. 8th, 1870
Mr. Chambers a captain of a ship, either owned all or half of a ship. Mr. Chambers died in Boston, the year not exactly remembered, though the records should be examined from 1780 to 1820, if found sooner, he being unmarried left his estate to a sister of his who was married to a man by the name of Rennick. Her maiden name was Polly Chambers' she died in Woodford Co. Kentucky without receiving her legacy. And no one has ever attended to it and the same has not been collected by any of the heirs to the present time.
Mary Rennick Caldwell
Transcription by Tom M. Short II 11/22/01 from a writing by Mary Rennick Caldwell given to me by Harriette Fredna Caldwell Henderson on 11/22/2001.

Margaret Corbin Lutz's Notes (prior to 1977):
She was the daughter of Henry Holman and Elizabeth Jones, who moved to Callaway Co., Mo. in 1826. She died at home of her daughter America (Mecca) Caldwell (Mrs. John T.Bell). Her granddaughter, Zella Bell, of Henrietta, Okla., has in her possesion a part of the diary written from May, 1899 until July, 1900. A more complete diary is in the possession of Dr. W.K. (Bill) Bell, of Jonesboro, Ark.

Abner Holt

5594 Abner Holt was born on 29 December 1776 in Halifax County, Virginia. A bond for the marriage of he and Elizabeth Brooks, daughter of James Brooks and Susan Price, was signed on 6 January 1801 in Halifax County, Virginia; bondsman was her father, James Brooks. Surety was Joel Watkins, witness was Elizabeth Brooks. He died on 27 February 1832 in Callaway County, Missouri, at age 55. He was buried in Old Prospect Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery, near New Bloomfield. Abner Holt and Elizabeth Brooks resided between 1806 and 1819 in Williamson County, Tennessee. He was included on the tax list in 1823 in Callaway County, Missouri.

Abner Holt left a will on 23 January 1832 in Callaway County, Missouri; Will of Abner Holt, dated 23 January 1832, proved 19 March 1832, mentions land in Cole County, Missouri. Wife, Elizabeth Holt; Slave, Siah; Daughters, Susannah Bennett, Elizabeth Holt; Sons, Timothy Holt, James Holt, John Holt, William P. Holt, Hiram Holt, Abner Holt, Elijah Holt
Witness: John Holt, Jr.
(Callaway County Land Deeds, Volume C, page 110)

From census data on birth place for children, that Abner Holt Sr. went to Tennessee before he settled in Missouri.

They settled in Callaway Co, MO in 1819.

The following is from the Pioneer Families of Missouri book written in 1876, which is not always accurate:
Abner married ELIZABETH BROOKS, of VA., and settled in Callaway Co. in 1819. They had Timothy, James, Robert, John, William P., Hiram, Abner, Jr., Elijah, Susan and Elizabeth C.

HOLTS SUMMIT

Abner Holt was the son of Timothy Holt Sr. and Elizabeth Chambers. Born in Halifax, Va., Abner later married Elizabeth Brooks, and together they packed up their belongings and headed their wagon toward Tennessee. It didn't take them long to witness the rapid settlement of that state in the first quarter of the 19th century. In 1819, they again ventured west, setting their sights upon the sparsely populated wilderness of central Missouri. Abiding the winter in Howard County, Elizabeth and her children joined the men in the Spring of 1820 in their newly cleared homestead in Callaway County. Abner soon constructed a mill in the southern portion of the county, which later attracted other newly arriving settlers. One of those settlers would be Hiram Holt, Abner's brother, who brought his family to Callaway in 1826.

Abner and Elizabeth had three sons: James, Elijah, and John. James is credited with actually becoming the founder of what would later be called Holts Summit, though many relations assisted him in the effort.

The Holt family chose a vast tract of land approximately 20 miles southwest of Fulton to plant their roots. James worked several years in his father's mill, the experience enabling him to eventually pursue a successful professional career. James eventually married Lucy Reynolds, and together with his son, Timothy, constructed a general store, which also served as a post office. The store was named Holts Summit because it was the highest piece of land from "there to the river." Elijah and John, along with Perry Simeon Holts (John's son) all contributed to the eventual successful community development of Holts Summit.

After the Civil War, Missouri and other midwestern states began to receive a growing number of fresh settlers; some corning from the reconstructed South, while others were fresh off boats from Europe. Callaway County received its share of these expectant pilgrims. The newcomers sought land with convenient access to the supplies that enabled survival. James and Timothy's store reaped success with its own measure of needy settlers.

By 1870, population was sufficient within the region to petition the county fathers for town status. Timothy Holt, who had married Elizabeth Clatterbuck, was ready to play his role in the town's creation. On September 7, 1870, Timothy plotted the city limits within the oak laden bluffs of Cedar Township, and the town of Holts Summit was officially born.

The town quickly began to grow. By 1884, the town's population had reached 75 hardy settlers. A listing of merchants and professionals of 1884 gives the reader an idea of how active the town had become. The list included such proprietors as J. J. Brown and Co., timber; William Bushnell, blacksmith; J. W. Burks, collection agent and lawyer; M. D. L. Dunn, lawyer; R. P. Nichols, teacher; H. C. Oliver, Justice of the Peace; Overstreet & Bennett, livestock; R. Warfield, coal miner; James Lee, Constable; Rev. M. B. Broadus, Methodist minister; and Rev. S. H. Pollard, Baptist minister. Timothy Holts was listed as hotel proprietor and insurance agent, while Perry Simeon Holt ran the general store and produce.

A foundation that precedes many of the merchants was the Union Hill Baptist Church. Originated in 1843, in a log structure erected north of Wainwright, the fellowship began as an interdenominational union church. By Holts Summit's inception, the church had become a Baptist congregation, worshipping in a finely built wooden structure in the town.

When the C & A Railroad (originally called the Hibernia Line) laid tracks through the town, erecting a depot for traffickers, the population began to grow. But it was the construction of the bridge over the Missouri River in the 1890's that ensured Holts Summit's survival. And to this day, the overflow of Jefferson City suburbanites, along with families returning to their roots, serve to increase the size and quality of this original Callaway county community.

His headstone in Old Prospect cemetery is very faded, but still readable, and still standing in good condition, as of May, 2007.

The history of this ancient Lancashire family traces its ancestry as a family of Anglo Saxon origin before the year 1100 and appears first in the ancient records in Lancashire

Ann Holt was a sister of Hiram Holt Jr. who married Permelia Carrington daughter of Randolph and Katherine McGary Carrington.

Ann's Aunt (her father's sister), Mary Jane Holt, married Robert Brandon and was the mother of Francis Brandon. Francis's daughter Mary Ann Brandon, married William H. Dawson who was the son of Mary Ann Herring Dawson, Grandson of John B. Herring. William played key parts in the political history of Fulton and Callaway Co., and Francis Brandon was the Mayor of Fulton in the 1870's. After Mary Jane Holt Brandon died, Francis married a second time to Georgia Anne Herring, daughter of George W. Herring Sr. (who was John B.'s 1st cousin).
