5359 Notes from Dixie Briggs, Holt Researcher. 1607, 19 Apr. "Dorothy Heywood, dtr of Robert, was baptised in Bury" (Rochdale Register 1582-1616)
1650...."The best-documented such household was composed of the planter, Robert Holt, his wife, Dorothy, and his partner, Edward Hudson. Witnesses interviewed by Maryland officials revealed that during the summer of 1650 Dorothy Holt lived with Edward Hudson. The two had been seen several times going "to bed together as if they had been man and wife, and they explained to curious inquiries that Robert Holt which was the said Dorothy's husband was dead. Yet Robert had not died; rather, Dorothy had deserted him to move in with Edward. Robert evidently responded to Dorothy's action not by charging her with adultery but instead by inviting her to return and to bring Edward with her. By Feb. 1650/51 the 2 were living together, the two men partners in a tobacco plantation. Less than a year later, the arrangement was already coming apart. When Rose Gilbert Smith, their matronly neighbor (and the local midwife), visited the Holts in Sept., Robert told her "that his wife would kill him. Rose protested that surely he was mistaken, but Dorothy broke in with the comment that "She were as good kill him as live as she did." When Rose replied that Dorothy would be hanged then, Dorothy told her that "then there was an end of two." Another witness reported that "he heard Dorothy Holt to cry for many curses to God against her husband, that he might rott limb from limbe, and that she would daily pray to God that Such Casualties might fall upon him. In November 1651, Robert finally complained to an official of the Prov. Court that "Dorothy, his wife hath threatened him divers times to take away his life." Moreover, Holt added, Edward Hudson "hath divers times been Compacted with her the said Dorothy to abvuse me....between them both I goe daily in fear of my life." Holt did not disclose to the authorities that their family had been a menage a trois, but that fact emerged from the subsequent investigation, which was conducted with remarkable swiftness. Just 4 days after the complaint was first filed, Dorothy Holt & Edward Hudson were convicted of "divers lewd incontinent and scandalous actions and practices. Although the penalties were severe---Hudson was ordered whipped with 30 lashes & Dorothy with 50-at their humble submission and suit for pardon acknowledging their great offence and faithfull promising future amendment, the court suspended the sentences & required only that Hudson pay costs. Thje judges encouraged the Holts to live together "as man & wife" ought to doe, " but testimony in a subsequent prosecution of Robert for bigamy showed that Dorothy continued her liason with Hudson and bore him at least 2 children." (FOUNDING MOTHERS & FATHERS -Gendered Power & The Forming of American Society- by Mary Beth Norton, Vintage Books, A Division of Random House, Inc. NY 1997)
1654, 4 Dec. Robert and Dorothy Holt divorced, by Clerk William Wilkinson, who later denied it.

2. Brothers Morgan Hill and Charles Hill (youngest son not on 1810) also came to Callaway Co., and of course sister, Mariah and the Herrings and Simco's all came about the same time. So there is a family pattern.

3. In 1840, Benjamin Hill is 30 under 40, which makes him born between 1800 and 1810, fits with the 1810 census. He was actually born in 1805. He lives near other verified Hill family members. In 1840, he bought land in Callaway county, Missouri.

I found Benjamin and family in Audrain Co. in 1850 and 1860. I am positive this is the same Benjamin that was in Callaway in 1840, the children all fit. Also, a few Hill families that would be related also moved to Audrain Co. from Callaway.

Township: Fulton
County: Callaway

2 males under 5 Reuben, Benjamin
1 male 5 and under 10 John
1 male 30 and under 40 Benjamin
1 female under 5 Susan
1 female 5 and under 10 Adaline
1 female 10 and under 15 Amanda
1 female 30 and under 40 Judith

There is an older daughter on 1840 that is not on 1850... but there is also a marriage record in 1846 that I have never been able to figure out who it was, and it fits their oldest daughter, which is why she is not on 1850 with her family.

Chalmus Charles Hill

5378 Date of birth guessed because of date of marriage, age range on 1810 and 1820. We know he was a son of Henry Hill, however, he was born 4 years before the marriage of Henry Hill and Susanna Jones. Susanna Jones may have been a second wife.

From Albemarle Co. marriage records:
Charles Hill & Molly Hill, 30 Dec. 1795, b-John Hill (Rec. of Marr. Bonds, 1780-1806) wit. Francis Anderson.

We believe that Charles and Molly Hill's youngest son was the Charles Hill born 1818, who married Sarah Tatum (daughter of Mary Herring and Thomas Tatum). On the 1820 census for Charles Hill in Albemarle Co., there is a ticky mark for a male under age 10. On the 1840 Callaway Co. census, there was an unmarried male age 20 but under 30 living with John B. Herring and Mariah Hill Herring. Charles would have been 22 in 1840 and was Mariah's youngest brother. Benjamin Herring, John B. Herring's father came to Missouri with John B. and Mariah Hill Herring. Benjamin's wife Nancy Hill was Charles Hill's Aunt. It is reasonable that with John B. Herring and Mariah Hill Herring both being Charles close relatives, that he also came with them to Missouri. In 1850, Callaway Co. Census, Charles had just married Sarah Tatum and was living with Morgan Hill and Nancy Scrogham Hill. Charles was Morgn's youngest brother.

John Hill, son of Henry Hill, was the Uncle of Charles Hill. He was also the Great Uncle of Sarah Tatum Hill. In 1900, Sarah Tatum Hill was living in the house of Ambrose Brockman Hill who was the grandson of John Hill. She was listed as daughter.... but that was obviously a mistake. In 1910, Ambrose B. Hill's children were living with Sarah Tatum Hill, listed as grandchildren. In 1860, 1870, and 1880, Sarah Tatum Hill lived next door to the Ambrose Brockman Hills. There was a close relationship between these families.

Charles Hill was a son of Charles Hill and therefore brother of Morgan and Mariah Hill, even tho he was 22 years younger than Charles Hill's oldest daughter Mariah. This may have been true as we know that Charles Hill was still alive in 1819, one year after the younger Charles Hill was born. He may have had a second wife, or his wife might have had children for 22 years. We have also not yet found all of Charles and Molly Hill's children. We do believe this relationship exists. If he was a son, it is reasonable that his parents died early in his life, which is why he would have come to Missouri in 1831 at the age of 13 with his older sister and family.

Charles Hill, Sr.

5379 on the 1820 census for Charles Hill Sr. in Albemarle Virginia, there is a male under 10 in the house, this would fit this Charles being a son of Charles and Molly Hill. On the 1840 census in Callaway Co., Missouri, there is a male, right age, living in the home of John B. Herring. This would be this Charles Hill, brother of Mariah Hill Herring, wife of John B. Herring.

Charles Hill, who played the fife while the Callaway Guards marched out of Fulton, was a "strong Union man." Hill was arbitrarily murdered by Union troops, along with William and David Givens, a father and son, in September of 1862 at the "Prairie Grove Massacre."

Charles Hill was killed during the Civil War in Callaway Co. Missouri. From the book, History of Callaway County, page 395:

During the month of October, 1862, William R. Given and David Given, his son, and Charles Hill, were killed at the reidence of the former, seven miles northwest of Fulton, under the following circumstances:

A company of rebels had camped in the neighborhood of Given's house, and by accident, one of the men belonging to this company had been dangerously wounded. The wounded man was taken to Given's house by his comrades. This fact had been made known to the commander of the militia at Fulton, who had charge of about one hundred men, composed largely of Germans. This company was sent out to attack and disperse the rebels, but before this was done, the company went to Given's house, and took William R. Given, David Given and Charles Hill prisoners, and placed them in Mr. Given's buggy house under guard. These parties at the time of their arrest were building a school-house, but a short distance from Given's residence, and were found on the roof of the same, nailing on shingles. Hill was a Union man, but Given and his son were Southern sympathizers. After making the arrest, the company of Union men were attacked by the rebels. The guards having the prisoners in charge asked the officer in command what must be done with the prisoners. The officer answered, by telling them to shoot them, which was accordingly done. Hill was killed instantly; William R. Given lived twenty-four hours, and David forty-eight hours after they were shot.

His parents names were very hard to read on his death certificate. Mother was Sarah Ann and father was just an initial and the name Hill, both of North Carolina.

Miss Pinkney Hill of Fulton, Missouri, gave the information for his death certificate. He was a professor at the School for the Deaf.

5384 Derritt Hill Dead
Derritt Hill died at his home in this city at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Hill had been sick for several days, in fact, had not been well for several weeks, but very few knew of his critical condition.
He had suffered severe injuries from a truss and this was followed by an attack of flux and during the last few days he sank rapidly.
The funeral service will be held at the family residence this morning and the internment will take place at Rising Sun Church.
Derritt M. Hill was a native of Virginia, having been born in Albemarle county, January 12, 1829, making him 66 years of age. His parents moved to Missouri when he was six years old and located in Callaway county. In 1851 he came to Audrain, where he continued to reside until 1891, when he took up residence in this city. On February 7, 1850, Mr. Hill was united in marriage to Francis M. Hill, from which union were born six children, only two of whom, John W. and Charles of this city survive him. In 1887 Mrs. Hill died, and in 1890 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Lyda Goodfellow, of Randolph county who survives him.
D.M. Hill was baptized by Marcus Willis in Fulton 1849, and he had ever afterward lived the life of an hosest, conscientious christian gentleman. He was a charter member of Long Branch Christian church and also Rising Sun Christian church. He was one of the counties oldest residents and none are held in higher esteem than he was. His advanced age seemed to unite him closer to his church and by the tender chords of love bind him closer to his friends and his loss to both will be an irreparable one.

Married 1, 1915, Marquis Aurelio Urciouli Fabaini, divorced.
Married 2, 1922, Roy Leafgreen, who died 1926.
Married 3, Apr. 28, 1928, Otto Victor Ueberroth.

In a letter from Douschka Ueberroth, Quoted from the Cra(i)ghead book:
Douschka tells us her 1st husband was a titled Italian and she ran away from boarding school to marry him when she was 20 years old. That marriage ended in divorce five years later. In 1922, she married Roy Walter Leafgreen, who died in 1926. Her only child is by her 3rd marriage.
She says she is extremely interested in the history of her family, and because she's never known any of them she's anxious to get aquainted. She writes: "I do so wish you could come to see me. We live 1/2 block from the lake, in a large 14 room house in Wilmette. (Illinois) It's lovely here, and very cold in winter. Would like a warmer climate, and when my son Chris finishes high school, we are thinking of moving to Tuscon, Ariz... The only thing I wish to accomplish is to know more about my family..." Regarding her unusual name, she also adds: "There is quite a history to it, but probably interesting only to myself." And so, she did not include it's history and did not write again.
