They must have gone to California right after they married. Ila was born in 1877 in California, but Alvin was born in 1879 in Missouri. On the 1900 census, Sarah Herring Miller shows 5 children born, 5 living. And 5 children were living with her at that time. But Ila was not, she was married by then. Ila made 6 children. There is something not quite right about the numbers and the one birth in California. Or... it could have just been an error on the census.

Mrs. Sallie F. Jatho Died On Wednesday
Well-Known Fulton Woman Had Suffered Several Paralytic Strokes.
Mrs. Sallie F. Jatho, 65 years old, widow of the late Henry Jatho, for many years one of the leading farmers of the Fulton community, died at her home on the Carrington road, just south of Fulton, at 4:50 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs. Jatho had been ill for the last three years, following two attacks of paralysis and a third overcame her just a short time before her death, Wednesday afternoon.
Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church in Fulton at 2:30 o'clock, Friday afternoon, the Rev. Dr. W. Garnet Alcorn officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Carmel cemetery, south of Fulton by the side of her husband. Mrs. Jatho was a member of the Central Christian Church, west of Fulton, joining there in 1885.
Mrs. Jatho, whose maiden name was Sarah Herring, was born near Fulton, December 14, 1866, as a daughter of Dabney Carver Herring and Mary Frances Herring, who came to Callaway county from Virginia in the pioneer days and settled on a farm in the vicinity south of Fulton.
She was married December 7, 1892, to Henry Jatho, who preceded her in death May 23, 1931. Six children were born of the union and five of these survive as follows: Albert Jatho, Mrs. Wesley Guerrant, and Mrs. Jewett Franklin, all of Fulton and vicinity and Misses Allie and Minnie Jatho, who reside at home. There are nine grandchildren. A son, Luther, died about four years ago.
After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Jatho lived on a farm on the Jefferson City road, south of Fulton, in later years moving to the small suburban place at which Mrs. Jatho's death occurred. The home place is now tenanted by Albert Jatho.
Mrs. Jatho also leaves three sisters and a brother, Mrs. L.E. Roberts, Mrs. Mollie Hyten, and Mrs. Lucy Henderson, all of Fulton and it's immediate community, and Brooks Herring of Kansas City.
Mrs. Jatho was a woman of home inclinations, whose pleasures circled around her husband, children, and friends. In her lifetime she performed many acts of kindness and neighborly ministrations, and she will be remembered by many for her interest in those about her. Her death brings sorrow to many and sympathy is extended to the bereaved. | Sarah Francis Herring

Sarah married her 2nd cousin, Isaac Crosthwait.
Isaac's mother Nancy Herring Crosthwait was a daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Herring. Benjamin was the brother of George Herring, Nathan's father.
Sarah and Isaac Crosthwait had only one child that I can find reference to: Annie Crosthwait, born 1847 in Callaway County. On the 1870 census, This family was living in Fulton, Mo. Isaac was a boot maker.
Marriage records record her as being married with the last name spelled Herron.
On January 27, 1853, she married her 2nd cousin, Isaac P. Crosthwait
The reason people are hard to find on transcribed census lists... The name was very clearly written on the page, Crosthwait. They transcribed it as Waist Crosth....

This is a speculative relationship. William Ham released interest in property of James Herring (1829). It is theorized that it was inheritence rights. Susan Ham lived near James Herring on the 1840 Census and near his descendants on the 1850.
William's spouse, if a Herring, may have actually predeceased James, since there is no mention in his will (written 1842). | Susan Herring

Thomas W., Judge Herring Abt 75 19 Dec 1922 Fulton Telegraph, Callaway Weekly Gazette
Name: Thomas Herring
Birth Date: 1845
Death Date: 1922
From Tom Fisher:
The Thomas W. Herring that married Mary Hardin is the son of James C. Herring. He was raised on the Herring Mill farm, which was very close to the Hardin farm. I was raised on a farm about 1 mile from there on the farm originally owned by John M. Simcoe, youngest of the children of James and Frances Simcoe. I have the obituary of Thomas W. Herring and it clearly says that he married Mary Hardin nearly half a century ago. They had one child: Williard Herring, who was living in Laramie, Wyo. when his father died. Thomas Herring was a judge of the Callaway county court from 1905 to 1915. He later moved to Auxvasse where he died and is buried.
death notice gave Dec 19, 1922, actual death was Dec 20, from death certificate. He died at 2:45 a.m. on the 20th, probably why other sources give the 19th. | Judge Thomas Wesley Herring

Judge Thomas Herring Dead
Auxvasse Man, Former Member of County Court, Had Been in Failing Health Several Years
Judge Thomas W. Herring, 77 years old, who was a member of the Callaway county court from 1905 to 1915, died at his home in Auxvasse Wednesday morning at 2:40 o'clock. He had been in declining health several years and on Tuesday suffered what appears to be a heart attack and passed away a few hours afterward.
Funeral arrangements have not been made because the family are waiting for messages from relatives away from home.
Judge Herring was born on the old Herring mill farm, northeast of Fulton, and grew to manhood and lived there many years. Subsequently he moved to Fulton and was engaged in the hardware business here for a time. Then he bought a farm in Shamrock township and moved to it, living there a few years until he moved to Auxvasse about twelve years ago.
He was married nearly half a century ago to Miss Mary Hardin, who survives. She is a sister of George W. Hardin, northeast of Fulton. The only child of the couple is Willard Herring, who resides at Laramie, Wyo. One brother, Rufus Herring, lives near Mexico, and one sister, Mrs. J. Ed. Simcoe, lives north of Fulton.
Judge Herring was a member of the Christian church and the Odd Fellows. He was a man of sturdy convictions, sound judgement and upright character and both as a citizen and county official was public spirited and __? | Judge Thomas Wesley Herring

"It appears that the Albemarle County/Orange County Herrings descend from a John Herring who settled in Isle of Wight County in the mid-1600s. There are two branches of the Herring Family which settled in America before the Revolution. The other line settled in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, in the 17th century." | William Herring

In this county of Typhoid Pneumonia, on Sunday the 11th at 7 o'clock and 10 minutes in the P,M,, William Henry, son of Gideon C. and Lucy J Herring, aged 15 years, 10 months and 20 days.
Thus in the early spring-time of life has departed a bright and most interesting child. During his illness he often expressed his desire to go home. While bending over his lifeless form, we noticed his face wore a bright beaming smile, which led us to believe he had reached his home - that house not made with hand eternal, and in the heavens.
We deeply sympathize with the distressed parents, and brothers and sisters in their sore bereavement. Willie has left us, but we trust that he now walks in the sunshine of his Savior's presence and love, and numbers one of that inaniperalite(?) company that have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the lamb. | William Henry Herring

In the 1930 census, Willis is living with son Obie and family in Fulton.
His address at time of death was R. #6, Fulton, Missouri. His son Obie Herring signed his death certificate.
His headstone no longer exists in Herring cemetery, however I was given Oct. 12, 1932 as date of death, his death certificate was dated Oct. 11, 1932. The date of burial on death certificate was Oct. 12, 1932, in Herring cemetery. I am using Oct. 11, 1932 as date of death because I don't see how the death certificate could have been made out before he died, which would be the case if he died on Oct. 12, 1932.
From the History of Callaway County Missouri, 1884, page 664-665
WILLIS D. HERRING, a worthy young farmer and well respected citizen of Fulton township, was one of a family of ten children, five sons and five daughters, nine of whom are still living, of George Herring and wife, formerly a Miss Lucy Simco, both parents originally of Virginia. They came to Callaway county in 1835, where they bought a farm and moved their family. The father died on the 23d of July, 1876, but the mother still survives and makes her home with her son, the subject of this sketch. Willis D. was born in this county on the 10th of May, 1857, and was reared here on his father's farm. Farming has been his constant occupation from boyhood, and he now has a farm of 160 acres substantially and comfortably improved, which he cultivates in an energetic, business-like and successful manner. On the 9th of June, 1881, Mr. Herring was married to Miss Emma Gibony, of this county. They have one child, born May 17, 1882. Mrs. Herring, his mother is a member of the Christian church, at Ham's Prairie. | Willis Dabney Herring

His obit said he died Wed. night at 10:00, that would be the 6th of July, and he was buried on Thursday, the next day. His death certificate had July 6 and the 6 was overwritten with a 7. I know the county infirmary was not a good place to be, but I really doubt they buried him after 10:00 on the night he died. They were not known for their record keeping ability there. I'm going by the obituary with the death date of the 6th. The cemetery at the old poor farm where he was buried no longer exists, and there are no records of it ever being there. When I first talked to Wayne Johnson (cemetery expeert for the Callaway Historical Soc.) he didn't even know they had been burying people there until it started showing up on death certificates as a burial place. The cemetery must have been plowed over and destroyed when the poor farm was no longer in use. | Wm. Henry Herring
