KILLED BY TOURIST
Josephine Herring Victim of Automobile.
Child Lived But Few Minutes After Being Struck_Accident Considered Unavoidable
Josephine Herring, three-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Herring, of East Ninth street, was struck and killed Saturday afternoon at 5:00 o'clock by an automobile driven by a tourist giving the name of T.J. Laune, who said his home was in New York City.
The accident occurred in front of the garage of Renner brothers, in East Tenth street, and was witnessed by the child's mother and aunt, Miss Dorothy Carter, and also several men who were at the garage. The witnesses believe it was unavoidable.
With her little brother, the child had crossed the street from the home of her grandmother, Mrs. John R. Carter, to the garage. After they had played there a short time they were called back by Miss Dorothy Carter, and it was while they were crossing the street to return that the car struck her.
Witnesses say that as the child started across the street she looked to the east to see if the street was clear but failed to look to the west. The car that hit her was coming from the west and was traveling at a speed between 20 and 25 miles an hour.
Laune said after the accident that he was watching a cow that was in the street and did not see the child until he was almost upon her. She had got out into the street five or six feet beyond an automobile that mechanics at the garage were working on before she was struck. She was knocked down by the fender and it is believed that both the front and rear wheels of the machine passed over her head. She breathed 15 or 20 minutes after the accident but was never conscious.
Laune stopped his car as quickly as he could and went into the house of Mrs. Carter when the child was taken in. He said then that he would remain in Fulton for a day, but shortly afterward he decided to continue his journey and drove away.
Laune talked with Ben Renner, one of the owners of the garage. He said he wad been working as an automobile mechanic in Arizona, and that work having become slack there, he was returning to his family in New York City. He spoke with a foreign accent. Mr. Renner thinks he was driving an old Pierce-Arrow car. The machine had been converted into a semi- truck by the removal of the rear seat and the substitution of a small truck body for it. The car was heavily loaded with boxes that were covered with canvas. Laune was driving by himself.
Funeral services for the child were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock by the Rev. R.C. Holliday, of the Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. W. Garnet Alcorn, of the Christian church. Burial was in Hillcrest cemetery.
Besides her parents, the little girl is survived by one sister, Margaret, and one brother, D.W., Jr. she was an active, bright little girl and was a general favorite in a neighborhood where there are many children. Great sympathy is felt in the city for all who are bereaved by her tragic death. | Josephine Carter Herring

Mrs. Mary Ann Dawson 29 Oct 1820 24 Jun 1906
Auxvasse Review (Callaway Co.)
On the 1840 census there were two daughters born between 1820 and 1825, to John B and Mariah. On the marriage list I found Herring, Mary Dawson, Robert Nov 3 1842. When i started searching the other census years, i found Mary Dawson living with Hills (her mother's family) on one side and Nathan Herring on the other. She also named a son Benjamin, and a daughter Mariah Susan.

Mrs. M.A. Dawson Dead
Mrs. Mary ann Dawson, born in Albemarle county, Virginia, October 29, 1820, died in Fulton, June 24, 1906.
These words chronicle the passing away of one of the oldest residents of Callaway county, one of the pioneers who passed through the varied experience of frontier life when the six-horse wagon, the log house, the well sweep, the tallow-dip, and the ready rifle were familiar to all, and and lived on into that period marked by the frame or brick house, the electric light, the palace car, the telephone and all the necessities of today which in that older day would have been deemed pure luxuries.
Mrs. Dawson was the daughter of John B. Herring and Maria, his wife. With her parents she made the overland journey from Virginia to this county in 1832, being at that time about twelve years of age. Fulton then extended from Stinson Creek to the court house square. The family made their first home in what is now the old Gerhardt residence, south of the creek. Later they moved to a farm north of the John Maloney farm, a few miles northwest of town.
On October 20, 1842, she married Robert M. Dawson. Their children numbered nine, three of whom died very young. Five children survive: William H. Dawson of this city, Mrs. Elizabeth Baskett of St. Louis, Mrs. Martha G. Franklin, of Fulton, at whose home the aged mother spent her declining years, James Allen Dawson, and Benjamin Y. Dawson, of this county. Mrs. Susan J. Nichols, one of the daughters, died in 1889.
Mrs. Dawson united with the Richland Baptist church under the ministration of Rev. Noah Flood, about sixty years ago, and ever lived a consistent and earnest Christian life.
At the residence of Mrs. M.G. Franklin, on Court street on Monday afternoon at 3:00, funeral services were conducted by Rev. G.H. Swift, pastor of the Baptist church, assisted by Rev. W.W. Stoddard, of the Presbyterian church, and Rev. C.W. Collett, of the Methodist church. The remains were laid to rest in the new cemetery. In the 1870 census, taken 4 months after they were married, it shows Mary and George living in the city of Fulton. However, it shows their ages a bit different than they actually were. They both should have been about 26 years old in 1870, however, his age is listed as 23 and hers as 19. On the 1880 census, the ages are correct.
On the 1900 census, George and Mary are living in the city of St. Louis. It's hard to read, but it does show their ages as 56, which would be consistent with other sources.
Mary signed her sister Georgianna's death certificate, giving her address as 7509 Wise Ave. St. Louis, in 1913.
Death certificate gives date of birth as Jan. 26, 1849, but this is not correct.
Information on death certificate was given by son Martin O. Gannaway, 7469 Wise Ave., St. Louis. She died in the Manchester Home, St. Louis. Martin did know the names and birthplaces of her parents.
Death certificate gives place of burial simply as Fulton, Missouri. Her obituary states she was buried "in the family cemetery south of Fulton". This would be Herring #1 cemetery. There is no headstone there for her, either she never had one or it was destroyed. | Mary E. Herring
