5151 10:00 p.m. Harry William Herring

5152 In 1920, single, working as a clerk in grocery store with brother Earl. Living with mother in Kansas City.

from Mt. Carmel listing
Name: Harry W. Herring
Birth Date: 28 Oct 1902
Death Date: 23 Nov 1946

His death certificate contained several errors. Information was given by his brother, John Carl Herring. Name of mother was given as Cassie A. Jackson. Jackson was the maiden name of his father's first wife. His mother's maiden name was Cassander Woods. His birth date was Oct. 28, 1902 not 1901. Death certificate says he was buried in Mexico Missouri, he was buried at Mt. Carmel in Fulton, Missouri.

Cause of death was murder, he was shot in the neck at the corner of Independent Blvd. and Park and Brooklyn, outside on the sidewalk near south State Street. He was a small time gangster in Kansas City, known as Silk Hat Harry. Was in prison a couple of times. I have a copy of the newspaper report of his death but it is very hard to read.

He was divorced, his wife's name was Gladys Herring. I have no information about her. His occupation was meat cutter, ss# 521-20-7807. He lived at 719 Highland Street, Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri.

SLAIN IN AMBUSH
Man Identified as William H. Herring Is Shot on Independence Boulevard.
GUNMAN HIDES IN DARK LOT
Three Persons See Slayer Run South on Park Avenue and Escape.
DESCRIPTION TO POLICE
Man Was About 33 and Weighed 160 Pounds, According to Witness.
A gunman, apparently lying in wait in a dark vacant lot on the south side of Independence boulevard approximately 100 feet west of Park avenue, shot and killed a man identified by police as William H. Herring, 45 years old, 719 Highland avenue, shortly before midnight last night.

After firing three shots at his victim, one of which entered the left side of Herring's neck, the slayer fled on foot south on Park, according to witnesses. Herring was dead when police arrived at the scene.

Disappears in Darkness.
The slayer ran at least a block south on Park, witnesses said, and disappeared into the darkness.

He was described as wearing a light suit. He wore neither overcoat nor hat, Charles H. Rodd, 2307 Independence boulevard, who saw the running man, said. Rodd heard the shots.

Rodd told the police the gunman appeared to be about 35 years old, weighed 160 pounds and appeared to be about 5 feet 9 inches tall.

Two boys who were on the way to work in the mailing room of The Star witnessed the shooting from a bus stop at Independence and Brooklyn avenue. They were Sam Cascone, 14 years old, 331 Olive street, and Norman Oryall, 16, at 630 Olive.

They told the police that they saw a man running west on the south side of Indepandence, just west of Park. He stopped behind the victim and fired three shots into his back. They also saw the gunman run south on Park as his victim slumped to the sidewalk, the boys said.

A Former Convict.
At police headquarters the two boys and officers who viewed the body identified him from a photograph as Herring, alias Harry W. Herring, a convict who has served two terms in the Missouri state penitentiary for robbery.

Herring, police said, had unopened half-pint bottle of whisky in an inside pocket of his suit coat when he was found.

Police surmised he had purchased the whisky at a near-by drug store, and was returning to his home about eight blocks west and south of where the shooting occurred.

Police were investigating reports that Herring's death may have some connection with the recent holdup of a poker game at the home of Yerla T. Havener, 3918 Walnut street.

Two men were arrested in connection with the holdup, one of whom was Don L. Taylor. Taylor also occupied an apartment at 719 Highland. His apartment was on the fourth floor, Herring lived on the third floor.

Police said that Herring had been living with a woman and neighbors verified that Herring had been living in the apartment about four months.

Herring, a butcher by trade, was said to have been employed at a meat market on Twelfth street.

Since Taylor's arrest last week, Herring had been visibly nervous, neighbors told police.

Previously he had served two terms in the Missouri state penitentiary for robbery.

Herring, known to police as Silk Hat Harry, was first arrested in 1925 for a series of filling station robberies committed with a woman companion. July 25 that year he and his companion pleaded guilty to two charges of highway robbery. They were sentenced to fifteen years each by Judge Allen C. Southern.

Paroled in 1930, Herring was arrested again in 1932 for a holdup of a hotel clerk at 916 Oak street. He was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to twenty-five years. He obtained a new trial. In his third trial in May, 1933, he was found guilty and sentenced to ten years. He was released from prison in June 1940, following a habeas corpus ? the Missouri Supreme ? which ruled he should have ? his unfinished first term before starting to serve the new sentence.

From the History of Callaway Co. Book:
Proprietor of Herring's Mill and farmer. Mr Herring, who has been successfully engaged in the milling business in this county for forty-six years, comes of that old Callaway family, whose name he bears, so largely represented in this volume and so usefully identified with the material development and prosperity of the county. He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, August 7, 1819, and when he was nineteen years of age, in 1838, his parents, John and Lucy (Carver) Herring, removed to Missouri and settled in Callaway county, where they lived until their deaths.
The same year he came out with his parents to this county, James C. Herring engaged in milling, and worked in the first steam mill-that of White & Jones-ever started in the county. This mill he rented and ran for seventeen years. From that time on he has continued the milling business, and has been at his present mill since 1866. It is estimated that the grain he has ground since he came to this county, if loaded in two-horse wagons, would make a train of teams over sixty miles long. From this it is seen that his life has not been an idle one, nor of little value to the people among whom he lives. Mr. Herring is also engaged in farming, and has a small farm adjoining his mills.Away back, on the 17th of June, 1841, now over forty years ago, he was married to Miss Sarah J. Knight, formerly of Kentucky. She still lives to brighten the Indian summer of his life.
Mr. Herring has been in Missouri for over forty years, and he and his wife are both time-proved and exemplary members of the Christian church.

5164 James E. Herring was my great granduncle, son of George Washington and Lucy Simco Herring, and brother of my great grandfather George W. Herring Jr.

He was born December 26, 1831 in Albemarle Co., Virginia. When he was four years old, his family made the journey to Callaway County Missouri.

On April 11, 1857, James married Eliza R. Conger in Callaway Co., Missouri.

Eliza Conger's brother, John G. Conger, married James E. Herring's sister, Jane Herring in 1857, the same year that Eliza and James were married.

On the 1870 census, James E. and Eliza Herring are listed as having two children, Sarah E. born 1858 and Cora, born 1866. James occupation besides his farm was milling flour. James E.'s first cousin, James C. Herring ran the mill in the county and that must have been where James E. was working.

James G. Herring July 04, 1927 Callaway Gazette

The dates on their headstone in Hillcrest cemetery are wrong. I guess that the stone was put up long after they had died and someone simply used the year 1925 as death year for both of them. Birth year for James and Clara are both off by 8 years.

Nonagenarian Died Suddenly
Mrs. Jennie Craghead Passed Away at Home of Daughter, Mrs. A. G. Graves, Sunday.
Mrs. Virginia Jennie Craghead, 90 years old a native of Callaway County, died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Graves, of Bluff street, at 10:00 o'clock Sunday morning. Her death came unexpectedly as she had not been ill.. She had been active, both mentally and physically, until a week ago, when she suffered a fall and had been confined to her bed since that time.
A funeral service was conducted at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Ebenezer Baptist church, northeast of Fulton, by the Rev. S.S. Keith, and burial was in the cemetery at that church.
Mrs. Craghead's maiden name was Virginia Herring. (this is not correct, her name was Jane Frances Herring) She was a daughter of the late George Washington and Lucy Herring who came to Missouri from Virginia in 1835. She was born in November, 1838, three years after the arrival of her parents in Callaway County.
Mrs. Craghead was first married to John Congo (Conger) and to this union tow children were born. They are: Lee Congo (Conger) and Mrs. Matthew Wright, both living east of Fulton. Her first husband was killed at Kenesaw Mountain, Tenn., (it's in Georgia) in 1863 (June of 1864) while serving as a soldier of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Craghead was married a second time to Benjamin Suggett, who died in 1875 (1877). To this union, three children were born. They are: Benjamin Suggett Jr. of California, Mrs. S.P. Beaven of Kirksville, and O.B. Suggett of Fulton.
The last marriage of Mrs. Craghead was to Calvin C. Craghead who preceeded her in death by ten years. (fifteen years) To this union, two children were born. They are: Gertrude Craghead, who died in young womanhood (she died at age 5), and Mrs. A.G. Graves, with whom Mrs. Craghead has made her home the last few years.
Mrs. Craghead was a member of a family of twelve children, (I only have records of ten...) three of whom are left to mourn her passing, They are: George W. Herring, and Dabney W. Herring, both living south of Fulton, and Mrs. Mary Gannaway of St. Louis.
Jane Francis Herring

5176 John Conger was the brother of Eliza Conger Herring. Eliza married James E. Herring, who was Jane Herring Conger's brother.

Jane and John had two children, Lee Conger, (born 1858 in Callaway County) and Florance Conger (born 1860 in Callaway County). Lee Conger died in 1945 and is buried in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Callaway Co., Missouri. I found a Estella Conger, age 17, living with her grandmother Jane in Audrain County on the 1900 census,

On December 22, 1864, Jane married Benjamin D. Suggett in Callaway County. Her name was listed as Francis Jane Conger.

Benjamin D. Suggett was born in 1811 in Kentucky. He was quite a bit older than Jane and already had several children by his first wife, Elizabeth F. Branham. Elizabeth was born in 1831 in Callaway County. They were married November 1, 1848. I do not have an exact date of death for Elizabeth Suggett, but it was between 1857 and 1863. They had 3 children, Napoleon (born 1850), Edwin (born 1855), and Sarah (born 1857)

Jane Francis Herring Conger Suggett Craighead is buried in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Callaway County Missouri, next to Cal Craighead. There is no date of death listed other than 19__. Cal Craighead died 15 Nov 1915

Her name was not Virginia. Her nickname was Jeannie, and it was assumed it was a nickname for Virginia. Her name was Jane Francis.

5180 Jessie Herring Dead
Jessie Herring died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Dunlap, northeast of town, Sunday morning, April 15, 1906, aged 12 years, and burial took place at the Dunlap graveyard, Monday afternoon after services by Rev. M.A. Hart, of Fulton. Pneumonia caused her death.
She was a member of the Christian church, and her unselfish disposition made her a favorite with all. Always thoughtful of the comforts of others, she readily ingratiated herself into the good graces of all with whom she came in contact and her many friends deeply deplore her death. She was a daughter of Henry Herring, who survives her.

5181 The book, A History of Callaway County 1884, lists his birth as 1796. I have not found this date anywhere else. The book gives the date of the family moving to Callaway Co. as 1837, but I find this date inconsistent with everything else I have researched about this family. It also states that he served in the War of 1812 as a drummer, and afterwards as drum-major in the State militia of Virginia.

From daughter Mary Ann's obituary:
With her parents she made the overland journey from Virginia to this county in 1832, being at that time about twelve years of age. Fulton then extended from Stinson Creek to the court house square. The family made their first home in what is now the old Gerhardt residence, south of the creek. Later they moved to a farm north of the John Maloney farm, a few miles northwest of town.

We know there were at least 11 children born. In 1881 when Amanda Knight Herring died, there were 7 children still living. The children who died young are burried in Herring 2 cemetery. Herring 2 is in very bad shape.

From the History of Callaway County Missouri, 1884, page 591
JOHN P. HERRING, an old citizen and worthy farmer of Caldwell township, was the second of a family of twelve children, ten sons and two daughters, of whom there are eight living, of John Herring, Sr., and wife, whose maiden name was Lucy Carver, both born and reared in Albemarle county, Virginia. John P., the subject of this sketch, was born in that county on the 22nd of March, 1821.

In 1838 the family removed to Missouri and settled in Callaway county, in that part of it now known as St. Aubert township, where the parents lived until their deaths. The father had been a gallant soldier in the War of 1812. John P. Herring was seventeen years of age when his parents came here in 1838, and had, therefore, been principally reared and educated in Virginia. Brought up a farmer, he has since followed that occupation and with satisfactory success.

On the 18th of June, 1846, he was married to Amanda J. Knight, a daughter of William L. and Celia Knight, of this county. She was born January 23, 1830. They have seven children living: James W., born October 4, 1854; Thomas C., born July 29, 1857; Eliza E., born December 31, 1859; Mary E., born March 23, 1862; Sallie P., born February 27, 1864, Celia A., born August 23, 1866, and Wilibia, born August 13, 1869. Five are deceased: an infant, Ann W., died October 2, 1850; William H., John W., died June 19, 1875, and Nancy J., died December 9, 1872.

Mr. Herring settled on his present farm in 1877, where he has since resided. His place contains about a quarter section of land and is well improved. He had a fine dwelling built in 1877, but this was destroyed by a cyclone on the 18th of April, 1880. He has rebuilt his dwelling, however, and has one of the neatest farm houses [sic] in the township. On the 19th of August, 1881, Mr. Herring had the misfortune to lose his wife by death. She was a noble-hearted, good woman, and her loss was sadly felt by all who knew her. Mr. Herring has long been a member of the Christian church.

His headstone is missing in New Bloomfield. His wife's headstone is there but is starting to fade away.

5194 John W. Herring, aged 66 years, died Sunday night about midnight, at his home on Windsor Street, from an attack of heart failure which lasted only thirty minutes. He died sitting in a chair on the porch where he had been carried because he had difficulty in breathing. Mr. Herring came to Columbia about three months ago from Kansas City and was interested in a small grocery store on Ripley street, in which also was his sister-in-law, Mrs. S.F. Jordan. He has many relatives in Callaway county and was taken to White Cloud church 8 miles from Fulton for interment besides the remains of his first wife. Deceased leaves a son, Charles, of Kansas City; a wife, a mother 88 years old, two sisters, and three brothers all of Callaway county. - Columbia Statesman obit, included in the Auxvasse Review. Further comments in the Auxvasse Review;
He was a brother of Judge Thomas W. Herring, of Shamrock. He was one of the best men we ever knew, and we have known him since his early boyhood.

5196 Drowned
It is our painful duty to record the unfortunate drowning of another young man in the railroad pond in this city. The accident occurred on last Saturday evening, about 7 o'clock. The unfortunate victim was John W. Herring, son of John Herring, who lives near Holt's Summit in this county. The young man was about 23 years of age, and was a pupil at our public school, and was highly respected by all who knew him. On the evening above mentioned, he went to the pond to bathe. He soon got into very deep water and being unable to swim, sank to the bottom. The alarm was soon spread and every exertion made by our people to recover the body. After searching for an hour or more, the body was found and brought up by Hugh Magorian, a mere boy. The water at the place where the body was found was ten feet deep. Every effort was made to resuscitate him by Dr. Brooks, but the vital spark had fled.
The entire community deeply sympathize with the relatives and friends of the deceased.

Susan Hill Herring (wife of Jonathan Herring)
From Albemarle Co. marriage records:
Jonathan Herring (Herren?) married Susan Hill 29 Dec 1809; minister, A. Brockman; bondsman, Richard Hill; witness, Ira Garrett; daughter of Henry Hill, who gives consent; witness Richard Hill and William Herring.

From Index to Miscellaneous Records" Albemarle Co. Courthouse, 1831:
Susan Hill Herring (wife of Jonathan Herring) was not living when her father's land was divided and so the land was to go to her heirs:
1.William Herring
2.Frances Herring
3.Amanda Herring
4.Elizabeth Herring

Jonathon may have also been dead at this time. A Hill researcher believes the children went to Tennessee with Susan Hill's brother Henry Hill Jr., however we have found no trace of them. But... we are checking on a theory that Jonathon was alive as late as 1835 and came to Callaway Co. Missouri with his brothers Nathan and George in that year. In the 1840 census, there is a white male living in Nathan's home that would have been the right age to have been Jonathan. We have never found any record of him, but because the Pioneer book does specifically mention him as being a brother of George, Nathan, and John, we are wondering if he didn't come to Missouri and die or go west shortly after 1840. Just a theory.

from the pioneer book: George Herring, of Virginia, married Elizabeth Closby, and they had Jonathan, George, John and Nathan. The three last named were soldiers in the War of 1812, and they afterwards married and resided in Callaway county. George married Lucy Sinco ; John married Lucy Carver, and Nathan married Susan Hill.

Found this, no idea if this is my Jonathan Herring:
