5103 Sudden Death
On Wednesday morning, March 6th, Mr. E.H. Herring died very suddenly of apoplexy. Mr. Herring had been complaining several days, but nothing serious was thought. On Tuesday evening about 2 o'clock, his friend asked him to assist in putting a bed on the wagon, after this was done, he started back to the house and got upon the fence and sit there a few minutes when he fell off and was heard to hollow. (this is how it was spelled in the newspaper) The family ran out and with the assistance of Mr. Wilfley, carried him to the house, and after he was put to bed he remarked, "I'm almost gone," and these were the last words he ever uttered. Dr. J.H. Howard was called and rendered all the medical aid possible, when death ensued as above stated. "Pomp", as he was generally called, was well-known to all of our citizens and had many warm friends who will regret to hear of his sudden and unexpected demise. He was about 39 years of age. Many happy moments have numbers of us spent in listening to the sweet strains of music made by "Pomp" but now he has "laid down the fiddle and the bow". He was buried on Wednesday, near his home, in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends. He leaves a wife and child and two aged and respected parents. Peace to his ashes.

In 1880, all household members can read and write.

1920 census shows Eliza age 59 as head of house, she's employed day worker cleaning houses. Also living with her, Carson age 17 (age is off a bit) working at a garage, Mary Leona (Carson's wife) age 19, and Russell Craighead grandson age 11, working as a paperboy.
Living in same house is her son George, age 29 working in a garage, his wife Ada age 24, and their children Evelyn age 2 and George age 1

On 1930 census, Eliza is renting a house at 821 Bluff Street. She's paying $18 a month for rent. She does not own a radio and gives her age as 66. She is working as a domestic in a private home. Living with her is her grandson Russel Craighead, 21 and his wife Merle, 19. He is an employee at a printing office, and she is working in the shoe factory.

After Nathan's death in 1912, Eliza moved into Fulton and continued to take care of her family. She raised her grandson John Russel Craighead, and worked hard the rest of her life, cleaning other people's houses. Eliza was a survivor. She buried 8 of her children, her husband committed suicide one month after the loss of their 6th child. She continued on for 29 years after his death, doing her best to support her family and taking care of everyone. She outlived all 10 of her brother's and sisters. I was born 10 years after my great grandmother's death. I am sorry I never knew this remarkable woman.
Eliza S. Herring

5110 In the 1884 book, it mentions that there are only 8 of John and Lucy's children alive, and I have death dates for all of them except Eliza. They were all alive in 1884 except George W., so that would mean that Eliza was also dead by then.

Herring, Eliza - Smart, Ennis C - Feb 18 1864

She must have died within a year or two, he married again in 1869.
She is not buried in Liberty with her husband and his two other wives. She is probably buried in Herring 2.

5111 Mrs, E. Carrington Died Here Saturday
Passed away at home of daughter, Mrs. Floyd Maddox, Funeral Sunday.
Mrs. Eliza Carrington passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Floyd Maddox, in southwest Fulton Saturday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock after an illness that had kept her bedfast for three and a half years. She would have been 80 years old this fall - having been born October 2, 1861, in this county.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock at the First Christian Church in Fulton, conducted by the Rev. A, F. Larson of this city. Burial was in the Burdette Cemetery, near Balenger Springs, beside the body of her husband, Nathaniel Dillard Carrington, who died in 1912.
Mrs. Carrington was the daughter of George and Hester Ann Herring, and was the last of her immediate family. She had eleven children and eight of them preceeded her in death. The surviving children are Mrs. Floyd Maddox, G. E. (Red) Carrington, Carson D. (Jack) Carrington, all of Fulton. There are 21 grandchildren, including J. Russell Craighead, whom she reared from infancy, and nine great grandchildren.
She united with the Christian Church at Hams Prairie at the age of 14 years. She was a woman of fine character, industrious and genial at all times.
The pallbearers were five grandsons and a grandson-in-law; Henry, Woodrow, Fred, and John Millard, George Carrington, and Jack Haley.

5112 Hook, James M - Herring, Betty Jane - Feb 20 1861
The transcription of this marriage from the original was mistaken. The year was 1868 not 1861. I have a copy of the original record. Another error occurred on the 1850 census showing her born in Kentucky not Missouri. All future references and census show her born in Missouri.

On 1900 census, 7 children born, 6 still alive. They had a servant in 1900, lived next door to Dabney Carver Herring family and near Gideon Herring family.

note: I now have her death certificate, and it confuses things a bit more. It says she was 73 years, 11 months, and 20 days old when she died on June 20, 1921. This would make her date of birth 30 Jun 1847, a year and a half before her parents married.

The 1850 census image gives her age in 1850 as 11/12, or one month short of being 1 year old. Birth place Kentucky. Census was done the 16th of October, which further confuses birth date of June.1847. According to this census, she was born in Sept. of 1849.

See notes about her parentage in her father's first wife's notes. I am not connecting her yet to that mother because I do not have definate proof, but I now believe she may have been a daughter of his first wife, Lydia Scott, total speculation at this point. It would make sense if she was still a baby when her father married, that wife would consider her as her own, since she raised her.

Columbia Statesman Mar 6, 1868 Page 2, Column 6 Hook, James M. -married Bettie J. Herring F 20
Found this in a newspaper index search, haven't yet seen the actual article. Don't know if the 20 refers to her age, if it does, it supports the Jun 1847 birth date.

Mrs. Bettie Jane Hook 1 Jul 1850 19 Jun 1921 Fulton Telegraph, Callaway Weekly Gazette

I now have a photograph of her headstone. Her date of birth on headstone is, July 1, 1849. Too many conflicting birth dates, I don't know when she was born.

George and Elizabeth Closby (Glaspy) Herring were named in the Pioneers of Missouri book as parents of Jonathan, George, and Nathan Herring. No daughters or other children were named, but that was not unusual for this book, it did not always mention children who did not end up coming to Missouri.

Death date is not verified. On a scrap of paper in the files of Glen Herring was written George Herring died April 18, 1845. He did not know who wrote it, or where it came from. It was written along with other old family deaths. Is this our George? no idea, but I include it as another scrap of information.

5141 According to the 1850 census and the Callaway County marriage records, William Ewing had previously been married to Lucy Ann Maupin. They had 5 children, Nancy J. (born 1846), Jacob (born 1849), Henry (born 1850), Sarah B. (born 1852), and George (born 1854). Lucy Ann died sometime between 1854 and 1859.

William Ewing died 1876. I do not find any records that they had any children. I do think that Georgia Anne raised William and Lucy's children.

Francis Brandon Mrs. Georgia M. Ewing 7 Jun 1877 C477
In June of 1876, Georgia Anne married Francis Brandon in Callaway, Fulton, Mo. Mr. Brandon was the former Mayor of Fulton, and the Public Administrator of Callaway County. He was born November 20, 1819 in Halifax, Virginia and died December 1890 in Callaway Co., Missouri. Francis Brandon was also a cousin of mine, his parents were Robert Brandon and Mary Jane Holt. He was related through my mother's family.

Francis Brandon's daughter, Mary Ann, married William H. Dawson, who was the son of Mary Ann Herring Dawson. She was a daughter of John B. and Mariah Hill Herring.

From the History of 1884 book: In June, 1876, Mr. Brandon was married to his present wife, previously Mrs. Georgia A. Ewing, a widow lady, a daughter of George and Lucy Herring, pioneer settlers of this county from Virginia

In March of 1874 they moved into a house in Fulton that was known as the Marlow house. It cost $1,475.

Belongs to the Christian Church in Fulton in 1876

Her name is spelled Georgianna on her tombstone, but her last name is listed only as Ewing. The name Brandon is not there.
She lived on Grand street in Fulton at the time of her death.

5142 Mrs. Georgianna Brandon Dead
Mrs. Georgianna Brandon, 76 years old, died Saturday morning at her home in Grand street. Mrs. Brandon had been in declining health several years and her death was due to the infirmities of old age and several contributary causes.
Mrs. Brandon, whose maiden name was Herring, was born south of Fulton in 1835. She was twice married, the first time to William Ewing, who died in 1876, and the second time to Frances Brandon, who died about 20 years ago. No children were born of either union.
Mrs. Brandon is survived by five brothers and two sisters as follows: James E. Herring, of Columbia; Martin Luther Herring, of Monroe county; W.H. Herring, G.W. Herring and W.D. Herring, of Fulton; Mrs. M.A. Gannaway, of St. Louis; and Mrs. C.C. Craghead, of Calwood.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon in the Fulton Christian church, the Rev. T.E. Winter officiating, and burial was in the old cemetery by the side of her first husband.

5143 Death of G.C. Herring
Gideon C. Herring, an old resident of Callaway county, died at his hom on the Jefferson City road, about three-quarters of a mile southwest of Fulton, Saturday morning at 2:00 o'clock. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at Mt. Carmel church and was conducted by the Rev. C.K. Gillum, paster of the Central Christian church, of which Mr. Herring was a member. A very large crowd was present, and the church was too small to hold half the audience.
Mr. Herring was born in Virginia on May 25, 1831, and came with his parents to Callaway county when a small child. The family settled on a farm about five miles southwest of Fulton, where Mr. Herring lived until about nine years ago, when he bought the place where he died.
He was married fifty-seven years ago to Miss Lucy Jane Simcoe, of Callaway county, who, with a son, Benjamin Herring, and a daughter, Mrs. Ibra Snook, survive him. A brother, Thomas Herring, also survives, and lives at Pitcher, this county. The daughter lives in LaGrande, Ore.
About a year ago Mr. Herring had a stroke of paralysis and a decline followed.
