Former Fultonian is Killed by Assassin
J. Allen Herring Shot To Death At Dallas, Texas, Thursday Morning
No Details Are Obtainable
Former Fultonian Was Foreman of Carpenter Crew on Big Hotel Under Course of Erection
J. Allen Herring, 28 years old, a former resident of Fulton, was shot and killed by an unknown assassin at Dallas, Texas, at 12:20 Thursday morning, according to advices received in the city by relatives. Mr.Herring had gone to Dallas the first of January to become foreman of a carpenter crew at work on a large hotel being erected in that city and already had made plans to move his family from St. Louis to Dallas, as it was a long-time contract he was working on. He told his mother in a letter written to her that he liked the town and might make it his permanent residence.
No details of the tragedy were obtainable by Fulton relatives of MR. Herring. His brother, Brent Herring, in St. Louis, was merely told by the chief of police of Dallas that his brother had been killed by an unknown person. The body was prepared for shipment and was expected to arrive in St. Louis, Friday. Funeral services will be held there sometime Saturday.
Mr. Herring was born and reared in Callaway county. He went to St. Louis about five years ago and followed the occupation of bridge carpenter for a railroad company. He enlisted in the engineering corps of the army during the last war and his detachment was scheduled to go to Siberia but the Armistice was declared before the order came for the movement of the troops. He was discharged from the army last December and since that time had been engaged in the carpenter and contracting work, until his departure for Texas.
News of his sudden death came as a distinct shock to his Fulton relatives. In the absence of definite information as to the manner in which he met his death they can only conjecture as to how it happened. One theory would be as good as another and they are waiting either for more details from law officials at Dallas or newspaper accounts of the tragedy.
Mr. Herring married a St. Louis woman and besides the widow is survived by two children. He also leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Herring of Fulton and the following brothers and sisters; Judge D.W. Herring, Woodson, Bob and Jack Herring and Mrs. Mayme Waters, of Fulton; Grover of Detroit; Herbert and Norman Herring and Mrs. Myrtle McCormack of Kansas City, Brent of St. Louis.
Additional information in a later edition:
J. Allen Herring, former Fultonian, who was shot and killed at Dalas, Texas early last Thursday morning, was mistaken for another man according to an investigation made by the Dallas police and which resulted in the arrest of a man named McVey, a member of the Dallas city fire department. McVey is in jail and a charge of murder will be placed against him. He admits that he made a misstake and that he did not even know Herring.
The latter was with several former St. Louis people, with whom he had been boarding for six weeks and they were at the Zoo Park in Dallas. As they emerged, McVey shot Herring, the bullet lodging in the back of his ear. The man had hired a taxi and had left his hat in it, which was the clue that resulted in his arrest. | Allen J. Herring

Dunlap, Annie, his wife, 31 May 1854- 10 May 1915
Anna is Robert's second wife, I do not believe they had any children. On the 1900 census, there is an 8 year old child named George Herring, cousin, listed as living with this couple. George is the son of William Henry Herring and Nevada Dorsey. When Nevada died, their 5 young children were separated and sent to live with other people. W.H. Herring was about 55 years old at the time of his wife's death. George's sister, Jessie is living elsewhere, but dies in 1906 at the age of 14 and is buried in the Dunlap Cemetery. Anna is the first cousin once removed of George and Jessie.

Benjamin's relationship to George Herring is based on what we know of the Herring marriages to the daughters of Henry Hill and Susanna Jones.and the handwritten note of Dolor Herring stating that John B. Herring was the cousin of George Washington Herring Sr.(son of George) All evidence points to Benjamin being the brother of George Herring.

My 4th and 5th great grandfather.
I am descended through two of his sons, and three of his grandsons.
This is my "brick wall".
Family stories always said that the original Herring family was from England, that was always consistant. One version has brothers coming to America and first being in Maine, then moving to Virginia. Another version has them starting out in Virginia. All seem to start with 3 brothers coming to America and then splitting up and going their seperate ways. I have found no concrete evidence of any of this. There were several Herring families in Virginia in the 1700's. We undoubtedy are linked to one of them, until I can find a Herring descendant who will do a DNA test, I doubt I can determine which Herring line we are linked to. There is a thought that we might be from the Herring family that included Abraham Lincoln's grandmother, Bathsheba Herring. Again, no proof found.
Contrary to the handwritten note by Dolor Herring stating that Benjamin Herring named his first son George Washington Herring after the Revolutionary War, I believe that Benjamin's son was born between 1760 and 1765 (before the war) and was named George Herring (without the Washington). It was this son George, who married Elizabeth Closby and named his first son George Washington Herring. I believe that Dolor Herring inadvertently left out one generation of George Herrings. I know that Elizabeth Closby was married to this son, George Herring, and was the mother of George Washington Herring, born in 1794. The marriage of George Herring and Elizabeth Closby is documented by the marriage book and by the Pioneers of Callaway Co., Missouri book.
Also, the name Benjamin is not proven. Dolor Herring wrote that Benjamin was his name, but he may have been named John Benjamin Herring.

Herring - In this county, on March 1st. 1875, Churchie, infant son of Marcus T. and M.A. Herring, aged 2 months and 5 days.
Our dear little babe, beloved first-born, Has left us thus soon. It's absence to mourn, Our sweet charished hopes, in anticipation, Have all been wrecked by this sad visitation.
And now were it not for that light from above, That chastens the heart though strengthens the love. Our grief would be stayed, our fate would be hard, As those without hope or trust in the Lord.
But thanks be to God for the love and the light, That pierces the gloom, that dispels the night, and thus brings to view the city afar, Where death enters not; whose gates are ajar.
And now may those who sigh for the dead, Dispel all their gloom, their fear and their dread. For Christ has arisen in power and might, And brought life and immortality to light. | Churchill Herring

assuming daughter of Marcus based on 'GDau' relationship to Andrew Herring on 1880 census.
Marcus and Clara were living with Andrew in 1880. I'm not positive that Clara was Marcus and Martha's child. They did have a son in 1874, who died at 2 months and in his obituary there is a poem that starts out, "beloved first born", but maybe it meant first born son... There are no children at all mentioned in either Marcus or Martha's obituaries. I have studied Andrew's other two children and this child doesn't really fit with either of them. Jarrel's wife died in 1877 and her obit does not mention that she was a mother. John's wife also died in 1877 and she did have a daughter, but that daughter was living with her other grandparents in 1880, and her name was Stella, born in 1877. All three brothers's wives died in 1877. Clara was definately listed in 1880 as a granddaughter of Andrew Herring, 6 years old. Since she was born about the same time as the baby that died, perhaps they were twins? I'm leaving her attached to Marcus and Martha Herring for right now, but this is a puzzle. | Clara Herring

Child Severely Burned.
Clara, the twelve-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Herring, residing one mile west of Fulton, was severely burned Monday morning while at play in the kitchen. The mother had gone out for a few minutes and the child picked up a pine stick and poked the fire. In playing with the burning piece of wood she ignited her clothing and when Mrs. Herring reached her she had been burned about the hands and face pretty severely.
The attending physician said she did not inhale any of the flames. Practically all the outer clothing of the child was burned. Thursday her condition was worse, although no serious consequences are anticipated at this time.
In 1920 she was living with her great grandmother and her grandmother. She must have survived the fire in 1911. I have found no other record of her.

He was educated in the county schools and then attended Kirksville Normal at Kirksville. Afterward he taught in Callaway and later in Texas County.
About the time he was teaching in the county, he started a newspaper at Tebbetts, known as the Tebbetts Post, and conducted this a number of years. Afterward he received a government appointment and was employed in the U.S. grain exchange at St. Louis. During that time he also studied law. Later he read law under the late Judge N.D. Thurmond of Fulton.
He served several terms as police judge in Fulton and a number of terms as justice of the peace here. On several occasions he was named special judge in the Callaway Circuit Court, the last time following the death of Judge Collier.
He was married June 24, 1909 to Miss Josephine Carter of Fulton who survives, together with one son, David W. Herring. Two other children preceded him in death - Margaret, passing away January 18, 1936, and Josephine, who was fatally injured by an automobile, dying October 21, 1922. He is also survived by seven brothers, C.B. (Bob) Herring, Fulton; Grover C. Herring, Melbourne, Fla., J. Brent Herring, Minneapolis; Jack Herring, Fulton; Norman Herring, Kansas City, Herbert V. Herring, Kansas City; Woodson Herring, Craig, Colo.; and two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle McCormick, Kansas City and Mrs. Scott Waters, Fulton. One brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Judge Herring was a member of the First Christian Church. Friends of the family extend sincere sympathy. | Dolor Washington Herring
