Groom's Name: Harvey M. Allen
Bride's Name: Miss Mary C. Lynes
Marriage Date: 4 Jan 1898

Two years after their marriage she was not living in Colorado with her husband. I think they had recently moved to Colorado and she was still in Missouri having a baby. They have a son born in 1900 in Missouri. Her name changes to Mayme in 1910 and Margaret in 1920, however the census shows these are her children, so I do belive it is the same person.

416 John Allen emigrated to York Co. Penn. from Ireland ca. 1753. No land records found there for him. After the Revolution moved to Iradell (Rowan) Co. N. Carolina. Was in the Continental Army. (Not Proved). Moved to Montgomery Co. Ky, near Mt. Sterling ca. 1795. Some descendants think they may have come late in life to St. Louis or St. Charles, to be near her nephew Gov. Hamilton Gamble, but no proof has been found of where they died or are buried.....Margaret Corbin Lutz.

Possible father and mother James Allan and Grizzell Bruce and the birth info of John Allen are written in a letter from Crockett Harrison to Margaret Lutz dated Aug.3, 1990. Crockett states that it is not definitive proof, but implies that is very likely correct. But, a check with LDS Family Search for James Allan/Allen with Grizzell/Grissel and other Grizel combos yields quite a few variations of possibilities, most from Scotland in the same time period.

From the book Pioneer Families of Missouri, which was written in 1876 and is not always accurate:
"ALLEN, David Allen and his wife, MARGARET GAMBLE, were natives of Scotland, but came to America and settled in south Carolina prior to the revolution. Mr. Allen took part in the war, and saw some hard service in the Continental army. After the return of peace he removed to KY., and settled in Montgomery Co. He had 2 sons, James and Joseph, who came to MO. The former married SARAH SMITH, of Bath Co., KY, and settled in Callaway Co., MO in 1825. Joseph married MARGARET MURPHY, and settled in Callaway Co., about the same time. The children of James Allen were Jane, Caroline, John, Nancy, David, James, William, Milton, Mary, Harvey, Martha and Virginia. The children of Joseph Allen were Clarinda, Jane, Grezella, Margaret, Amanda, John and Sally."

There was a marriage record in Callaway Co., marriage book for John Allen and Nancy Davis, Feb. 5, 1831. I do not know if this was the John Allen, but it might explain this Mary Davis living in their house, she could be a relative of that Nancy Davis.

Mrs. Josephine M. Herring 16 Apr 1854 13 Dec 1922 Callaway Weekly Gazette

It's probable that, because she was always called "Jo", that her first name was presumed to be Josephine, she did go by the name of Josephine later in life. However, early records show her given name was Josima McNerva Allen.

443 1860 Census 847-869 Allen, Sarah, Martha, Milton & Rosa (16).....Margaret Corbin Lutz's note.

Milton's first wife appears to have died in 1861. The LDS has a Milton Allen remarrying a Lucy J. Pemberton in Callaway Co. January 05, 1871. This is probably Milton son of James Allen and Sarah Smith. LDS also has a record of Milton M. Allen marrying a Lucy Mae James (B. abt. 1846) abt. 1878 of Springfield, Greene Co., MO. Being married in 1878 doesn't work with the children listed with Milton in 1880. LDS has a Milton Mitchel Smith Allen of Lancaster, Tx marring a Lucy Jane Adair on 5 Jan 1871, no place listed. Milton appears to be in Dallas, Texas in 1900. Margaret Lutz's research had him as Milton Smith Allen. It is possible there are 2 Milton Allens born about the same in Missouri. Milton's sister, Martha Allen supposedly married a Benson. In the 1880 Census below, there is a Thomas Benson, 11, living with the Milton Allen family. But I haven't found a son Thomas with his sister Martha yet. It appears that Lucy J. was actually Lucy J. Adair, daughter of John Adair and Elizabeth Pemberton. She appears in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census of Callaway Co., MO, Living with her father...TMShort II
