M: James Rufus Wilks - they are buried in Auxvasse Cemetery.
The death certificate said she had chronic myocarditis & generalized arteriosclerosis & old cerebral hemorrhage.
She moved to Missouri @ age 4 after her mother died - she lived with S.P. Day's sister, Margaret Day Stringer, south of Auxvasse - most of the time. I have a picture of her and Charles Crooks and she is 4 or less. S.P. didn't marry Charles' mother, Margaret Crooks until 1890, which explains why Oddie lived with Aunt Mag so much, but I don't know why they did not marry for so long. Oddie and Charles Crooks were quite friendly. Charles was a Presbyterian Minister and Surgeon, doctor and missionary to Siam. He spent most of his time there, with his wife, Florence, retiring and dying in St. Augustine, FL. in 1949. When S.P. died, Mother always said there was a piece of property out around Odessa and Midland, Tx where her mother died. Oddie inherited it, but Rufus could not take care of it and did not want to pay taxes on it, so they sold it. There was a piece of property up around Kansas City, I think, too. Charles Crooks agreed to pay S.P. Day $50 or $100 per year as long as he lived, for the property. I think he was just generous. At any rate, when S.P. died in 1932 or '33, Oddie did not inform Charles right away. the check was due and the depression was on. Oddie did join the Six-Mile Methodist Church near Kansas City, KS @ 16 years, Wyandotte Co, KS. She went to high school for 2 years in Kansas City, KS, while she lived with her father. Have a picture of her at age 16, made at the same studio that the early picture was. Oddie married when she went back to live with Aunt Mag. After they married they lived for a few years in the Williamsburg community, MO, farming. My info said that they moved to the farm, then known as Callaway Post-Post Office where Mr. Wilks ran a general store and post office. In 1908 the post office was discontinued and a new house built on the site. They lived there many years, about 3 miles north of Hiway 40 (interstate 70). (Obit) They died in Grinnell, Iowa.
I don't remember too many specific interactions with Oddie. I always had the idea that she loved me, but she had so many grandchildren. I don't specifically remember a time when she used the expression, "reckon" but she did. I do remember my mother telling me that Oddie used it. I do too. I figured if it was good enough for Grandma, it was good enough for me. My grandson asked me if reckon was a real word. I said yes and told him about Grandma.

Native of Portland Died near Bachelor
Sanders P. Day, 87 Years Old, Succumbed at Home of Daughter
Sanders P. Day, 87 years old, a native Callawegian, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Rufus Wilkes, near the Harmony church northwest of Bachelor, on Friday March 17, of the infirmities of old age.
Funeral services wre held at the New Hope Baptist church, two miles south of Calwood, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. the Rev. A.F. Lawson officiating and burial took place in the church cemetery.
Mr, Day was born at Portland in Callaway county, January 20, 1846. In 1873 he was married to Miss Frances Overton, of Fulton, who preceeded him in death 53 years ago. In 1890 he was married a second time to Mrs. Margaret Crooks, of Kansas City, who also preceeded him in death 18 years ago. Mr. Day was one of eleven children.
Most of Mr. Day's early life was spent in Callaway county, but he later lived in Kansas. He had made his home with his daughter for the last 18 years.
Besides the daughter at whose house his death occurred, he is survived by a stepson, Dr. Charles Crooks, who is a missionary in Siam, and one sister, Mrs. M.E. Stringer, of Fulton. Twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren are left to mourn his death. Mrs. Jack Carrington of Fulton is a granddaughter.
Mr. Day had led an active life and was a man who held the esteem and respect of all, being at all times a good neighbor and kind friend and counselor. | Sanders Perfect Day

Pat McAlister notes:
The stone says 1845 - 1933 - but, there are two death certificates, one signed by Mrs. Rufus Wilks, looks like her handwriting, at least it is poorly written. The second one has the same info, signed by R. S. Simco. He was the doctor -same age as S.P. Old Doc Simco is what I heard all my life. . He is written up in the Callaway County book -or Pioneer Families of Missouri. The dates on the certificate are different than the stone. Don't know who did the stone, which is an obelisk, rather like the Washington Monument, but only about 8 feet tall. It has writing on three sides. His brother, Truman (Bud) and his wife, Clara Polacek Day are buried on one side. On another side are two more and on the other someone with S.P. The certificates do not state manner of death .They state that S.P.'s father is Truman Day, born in KY and his mother was born in Scotland. However, death certificate for brother, Truman (Bud) says he doesn't know and sister, Margaret Elizabeth Day Stringer says that mother is Eliza Clendenen and she was born in Ohio. In 1900 and 1910 censuses, S.P. and wife, Margaret are living in Wyandotte Co, KS- can't read the TWP-Quinda[ro] No one there could tell me either. Found the marriage license in county courthouse. They were married in 1890 - she died in 1914. S.P. Day, 44 and Maggie E. Crooks, 45, June 18th, 1890 in Wyandotte County, KS by Justice of Peace, J.M. Gray -bought on the 14th -returned on 23rd. Can't read.
1920 - he was on the census with Aunt Mag and Abbie Day in Aunt Mag's house. He is 75, she is 54. Says their father was born in KY and mother in Ohio
Uncle Lowell said that he thought he was about 12 when S.P. came to live with them, that he sort of moved around. Lowell was born in 1909. Lowell said that "Grandpa Day was quite a guy - mild compared to his brothers." - said "he grew up with those kids"-(S.P.'s nieces and nephews I suppose). Lowell said that one of the brothers lived with Aunt Mag for a while-"hiding out from the law"- Lowell didn't remember what he had done - but he kept a gun there.
S.P. and Maggie Crooks, widow with son, Charles, must have known each other for 15 years before marrying, unless they lived together, unmarried. Charles Crooks (Uncle Charlie) was a surgeon and Presbyterian Minister - missionary to Siam. Spent most of his life in Siam - established a hospital - Lowell said 30 or 40 years.
Lowell said that Permelia Frances Overton's parents did not want her to marry S.P. He was a bit of a rogue and they were prominent. S.P. had a long white beard and was blind in old age.

1900 census gives her birth as Sept. 1848, if the marriage date is correct, she would have been 9 years old... On the 1900 census, it says married, 50 years. That would mean she got married at age 2. Death certificate give 1840 as year of birth. There is also a 3 year old grandson, Roy Washington, living with this family in 1900. Daughter Mary was probably the mother of this child, altho I don't know where she was in 1900. The note for children on 1900 census says 7 children born, 5 alive. I know of 6 children, and can account for 2 of them dead before 1900. This does not account for Mary or the grandchild living with them.
1880 census gives more correct birth year.

Pat McAlister notes:
The church register -Prince Georges Co, MD - King Georges Parish - 1689-1801:
Truman, b. February 14, 1764, son of William and Mary
Truman and his brother William came from Winchester, VA-late 1700s-established Day's Mill, homeplace and most of town burned-Jan.11,1887. Most of family gone to MO by then, besides Truman had sold his part.
The following is a quote from Gary C. Harmon - owner of the mill - 1995: "They came on a flatboat and settled in Fleming County on the Licking River. They started a thriving business by the operation of a mill on the Licking. The town soon became known as "Day's Mill". They operated a 1,000 acre farm, mill, distillery, dry goods store, post office and a saloon. Two homes were located near the mill. Truman left the area after William bought out his interest. The mill and the distillery produced the greatest income. William Day married ? and had only one child, a son, Squire Asberry, born at Day's Mill February 14, 1808 and died at Day's Mill on December 15, 1882. He took over the operations and manufactured whiskey and sold it with a label "Made at Day's Mill on the Licking River". S.A. Day was married twice and I included a list of his children. Apparently the decline of Day's Mill occured on January 11, 1887 when fire burned the entire town, except for the distillery and one home. S.A. Day had 18 children. One son, H.V. Day was the father of Opal Shanklin. S. A. and H. V. both lost their homes in the fire. After the death of S.A. Day, H. V. Day and M.C. Saunders purchased the farm in partners. (1883) In 1905 H.V. Day priced his half of the farm to M.C. Saunders assuming he would not or could not buy it, but he did buy and the Day family left the farm. M.C. Saunders immediately sold the farm to Wood Graham. The Graham family retained ownership for three generations before selling to Gary C. Harmon in 1984."
The Sanders & Day Mill was a flour mill from one to four miles down the river from Eden's Chapel.
Truman served in the Rev. War with the 58th Regiment of Ky Militia. From: Talleys KY Papers - Talley - 976.9T - p.36 - Fleming Co - Order Book B - 1804 - Truman Day [1764] makes a statement he was in the 58th Regiment - Kentucky Militia
In April, 1814, he was appointed sheriff of Fleming Co, Ky and in April 1820, he was recommended as magistrate. Truman is buried at Eden's Chapel, south of Hillsboro, KY. The Sanders and Day Flour Mill is on down the road, east (on the Licking River), I think, but Locust Creek is west. His will is recorded in Fleming Co, KY Will Book I, page 481. I have a copy - has his signature L.D.S. says Truman Day m: Mary Sanders and had Truman, Jr. in 1810 in Fleming Co, KY Somewhere I found that he married her in 1784. Truman m: Catherine Williams in 1811, after the death of Mary. By her he had:Fanny; Rebecca; Martha; Middleton and Dudley.

Truman Day Dead.
Truman Day, 64 years old, was found unconscious Saturday morning in the woods near his home, seven miles southeast of Fulton, and died at his home at 2:00 o'clock that afternoon. Death was due to apoplexy.
Mr. Day had gone to the woods to load ties and his delay in returning to his house caused members of the family to become uneasy, when his sister went to the timber and found him lying by the side of his wagon. Evidently he had just started to load a tie when stricken. He was carried to his home, but never regained consciousness.
Mr. Day is survived by his wife and three sons, Charles, George, and Edward. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at New Hope church, south of Calwood, the Rev. Mr. Gibbs, of Mexico, officiating, and burial was in the New Hope cemetery.

History of Hancock County, Illinois
by Scofield, pg 1183
DAY, Truman Skinner, now deceased, was a well known man in Hancock County during his lifetime, and his widow has been an honored resident of Elveston for some years. He was born in Fleming County Kentucky, August 20, 1816 (date is incorrect as per census records. Should be 1844), a son of Alvin and Priscilla (Foster) Day, natives of Kentucky. He died in Kentucky, after which his widow went to Illinois and lived there for some years, but then returned to Kentucky, where she died.
Truman Skinner Day was reared in Kentucky, and during the Civil War enlisted in the 10th Kentucky cavalry, and after a service of a year, was honorably discharged. He was married December 21, 1865, to Lou Gray, born in Fleming County Kentucky, a daughter of David and Mary Ann (Gardner) Gray of Kentucky. After his marriage, Mr. Day resided in Kentucky until in August 1888, being engaged in clerking in a general store. At that time he went to Keokuk, Iowa and was connected with mercantile interests there and on the road. On June 9th, 1901, he was drowned in the Mississippi River at Montrose, Iowa. In 1909, Mrs. Day came to Elveston, where she has since resided.
Mr. and Mrs. Day became the parents of the following children Charlton A., who was born February 12, 1867, died August 9, 1914; William M., who was born July 18, 1869, died December 7, 1898; Clarence B., who was born November 6, 1871, died September 28, 1906; Maggie P., who was born May 10, 1875, is Mrs. John Damron of Bentley, Alberta, Canada; and Harvey R., who was born, January 12 1881, died October 20, 1896. Mrs. Day is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and her husband belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a Republican. His fraternal affiliations were with the Hamilton Camp, M. W. A., and the Keokuk Lodge, I. O. O. F. | Truman Skinner Day

Late 1800's there were reports of a "Day Gang"-in papers and book. It consisted of Jackson Day-William Day-Truman Day-Fred Moody-Fred Neff. The Neffs married into the Polaceks. Fred Neff married a Benskin. The Polaceks got arrested for moonshining. Says the Day Gang stole $530 in cash & 2-$20 gold pieces, etc. from the Martin Wolfman house in Montgomery County, MO. Says William Day went to the pen. | William Day

From an article online in World Magazine, Christian Views:
Tina Taylor is always well turned out. She has her short, white hair done every week, wears colorful blouses with neatly pressed slacks, and wouldn't dream of leaving her apartment without a coat of Toasted Almond lipstick, carefully applied.
But these days, Mrs. Taylor's daughter, Mary Ann Rinnert, picks out her clothes for her, laying out the next day's wardrobe the afternoon before.
Mrs. Taylor is, after all, 100 years old. The centenarian lives at the Beatrice Hover Assisted Living Center in Longmont, Colo. Her daughter, Mrs. Rinnert, lives nearby and visits Mrs. Taylor at least twice a day, sometimes more.
"That's because I'm her only child and since she had me at age 35 after 17 years of marriage, I'm still here when she needs me," Mrs. Rinnert said. "She's outlived almost everyone else."
Mrs. Rinnert, a retired elementary-school teacher, visits with her at Beatrice Hover, drives her on errands, and takes her out to eat. "What she needs from me is just to be there," Mrs. Rinnert said. "She just feels like as you get older, you need the people around that you care so much about."
Mrs. Taylor was born in northern Missouri in 1905 to a family of 10 children, and her father was a farmer. "But not a very good farmer," said Mrs. Rinnert, laughing. "He much preferred writing poetry," an avocation he passed on to his daughter, Tina (pronounced "Ty-nah"). Today, she keeps a book of her own poetry? some of it written more than a half-century ago? in her apartment. She shares it only with special, trusted visitors like Herb Herbert.
So Mrs. Taylor worships at Beatrice Hover's chapel and LBCC keeps in touch via weekly communion visits. "I think she really appreciates it because she doesn't have a lot of contact," Mrs. Rinnert said.
