Later, he came to Callaway Co., and lived with a great aunt, Nancy P. Craghead Thomas. After coming to this county, he spent the remainder of his life here, srving more than 30 years as a rural mail-carrier on routes out of Fulton. In 1941 he retired. He suffered ill health for some time before his death.
According to his sister-in-law, Myrtle Roberts, he always insisted on using the "i" in his name.

2707 Exposure Caused Death.
William Craghead Found Dead Beside Chicago and Alton Track Near Callaway Station
William craghead, known as "Little Billy" Craghead, a character familiar in this county for many years, was found dead beside the Chicago and Alton railroad track near Callaway Station Saturday morning. The body was first noticed by passengers on an excursion train which left Fulton early Saturday morning, and when the train reached McCredie word was telephoned Prosecuting Attorney Harris. Coroner Yancy was notified by Mr. Harris, and that official went to the place where the body lay. The body was brought to Fulton on the morning freight train and an inquest was held over it at the city hall. The testimony of several witnesses was heard and the conclusion was reached that death was the result of exposure. From the best information obtainable, it is supposed that Craghead started from Auxvasse for the farm of Thurmond brothers where he expected to prune some fruit trees and that he passed the place and wandered along the railroad track until exhausted and that he then lay down the the storm of Friday night and was frozen to death., He was addicted to the liquor habit, and this supposition is natural. No bruises of importance were found on him, and the body gave no apprearance of foul play.
Craghead was over fifty years old. Several years ago he had one hand blown off by a giant fire-cracker and since that time he has been a rather aimless wanderer. He was well connected and burial occurred on Ham's Prairie Sunday afternoon.

2708 William Craghead Found Dead.
As an excursion train was going to Mexico, Saturday morning, John steele and Jack Brooks saw a man lying off from the railroad track a short distance from Callaway station. They reported the fact at McCredie station and County Attorney Harris was notified. He informed Coroner Yancy, who went out on the early passenger train andpicked up the body which proved to be William Craghead, and took it to McCredie and transferred it to the freight and brought it to Fulton where an inquest was held. Mr. Craghead was in Fulton Thursday, and left for Auxvasse to work for Thurmond Bros. and may have been under the influence of liquor, and fell off the railroad track and rolled down the embankment and became benumbed, died where he fell. His clothing was thoroughly soaded which indicates that he laid all Friday night in the rain and snow. He was the son of the late Stephen Craghead and, was about 58 years old. Poor Billy, he had only one enemy and that was himself. His life was tempestuous - like the night was on which the spark went out. We sympathise with his relatives.

2710 William N. Craghead Miss Zella Fewell 22 Nov 1903 H469

At the time of his death he lived at 512 Bluff Street, Fulton. He died at home, three days after suffering a stroke. He was a widower. He was a retired farmer, and was never in the military. William Noble Craighead signed his death certificate.

He spelled his name Craighead.

There is some confusion about his name. On all census before 1920, his name is William N. Craghead. His marriage record shows the name William. His death certificate shows William. On the 1920 and 1930 census he is Claude. On his son's obituary he is Claude. William had a younger brother named Claude, who died in 1902. I have found no further records on this brother.

William and Zella were together on all census, living with or next door to William Noble. In 1900, William Craghead was working on Willliam Noble's farm, and Zella Fewell was listed as the adopted daughter of the Nobles. William/Claude Craghead and Zella Fewell Craghead named their son who was born in 1920, William Noble Craghead. William and Zella are buried at Unity church. I have no idea why he changed his name, but everything I have found points to this conclusion.

However, I could be totally wrong.

Married but Lived Single. A Denver Couple Occupied Separate Rooms and Didn't Speak for a Year
Date: 1917-04-07; Paper: Kansas City Star
From the Rocky Mountain News, Denver
Growing weary of living single, though married, Mrs. Martha V. Craghead sued Dr. W. Spencer Craghead for divorce. The action came up for hearing in District Judge Denison's court the other day.
Mrs. Craghead's testimony revealed an odd state of affairs as between herself and husband. Though the pair lived in the same house they occupied separate rooms, and for more than a year neither spoke to the other or manifested any sign of the other's presence. The kitchen in the divided home was a sort of a "community" affair, one doing the cooking duing the absence of the other. Sometimes, however, there was a silent conflict when both wished to prepare melas simultaneously. Both depended upon the same food supply, which was ordered by Mrs. Craghead and paid for by her husband.
By her own admissions that she had remained in the same house with her husband Mrs. Craghead defeated the purpose of her suit. Judge Denison held that the couple had not lived "separate and apart" as comprehended by the divorce laws of Colorado, and that, therefore, a divorce could not be granted.

On his daughter Martha's death certificate, filled out by his daughter Fanny Martin, his middle name was Toliver.

2737 Martha, wife of John V. Craig, of Jasper county. From the 1884 Missouri book.
I have not been able to find this couple on any census
John V. Craig

2738 Her headstone is clearly readable except the bottom part that shows the age she was when she died, and that is sunken into the ground. She died in 1845 so going by date of her parents and ages of children born before 1845, she would have been born abt. 1843. Lucy E. Craig

2740 In 1910, she was the postmistress at McCredie. Her name was listed as Martha Lou Craig. Still living with her mother.

At the time of her death she was single, living in McCredie. Her occupation was listed as postmistress in McCredie. She died in the Baker nursing home, Mexico, Missouri. Mrs. John Martin of McCredie signed her death certificate, this would have been her sister, Fanny.

On the 1870 census, her name is not Mary, but something unreadable with a middle initial of E. It is definately not Mary.
On 1880, she is Mollie, with two small children, living with her parents, last name of West. Her husband is not with them, but he is in future census.

She lived in rural 9 mile prairie twp, Williamsburg, Missouri R.F.D. and died at home. A.T. West gave info for death certificate, lived in McCredie Missouri. This probably was her son Alvin Tolliver West.

From the Pioneers of Missouri book: (which is not always accurater)
CRAIG, One day, a great many years ago, as a ship was sailing from an Irish Port to America, a sailor named Toliver Craig fell overboard and was drowned. The next morning a boy baby was found on the deck of the vessel, with no one to claim him or take care of him. The ship was loaded with emigrants, among whom were his parents, who doubtless felt too poor to assume the care of the little fellow in the new county to which they were going; so they took that method of throwing him upon the charities of the ship's crew. After some consultation, it was decided to name the little waif for the lost sailor, and he was accordingly christened Toliver Craig. He grew to be a man, married and had a son, whom he also named Toliver.

The latter also grew to man's estate, married, and had a son, whom he named Toliver, Jr. The latter married ELIZABETH JOHNSON, of VA., and removed to Scott Co., KY., during the early settlement of that state. The Indians were very hostile at the time, and they lived three years in a fort. They had 7 children, Jack, Elijah, William, Nathaniel, Mary, Nancy and Toliver.

Jack, Elijah, William and Nancy married and lived in Tennessee.

Nathaniel married POLLY EALEY, and lived in KY. They had William, Nancy, Martha, Robert, Ann, and mary, all of whom settled in MO.

Toliver married PATSEY WRIGHT, an English lady, by whom he had Elizabeth, Polly, Larkin, Permelia, Catharine, Patsey W., Sally, Nathaniel, Margaret, Fannie, Carter T., and John T.
Larkin married FANNY FICKLIN, and settled in Callaway Co. at an early date.

Catharine married her cousin, LEVI CRAIG, who died, and she afterward married COLONEL THOMAS SMITH, of St. Aubert, Callaway Co.

Patsey W. married GIDEON GAMES, of Callaway Co.

2746 MRS. PERMELIA SIMCOE DIED AT NOON TODAY

Funeral Services to Be Held at the Richland Baptist Church on Thursday

Mrs. Permelia Bailey Simcoe, 85 years old, a native and life long resident of Callaway county, died at 12:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the home of her brother, R. S. (Doc) Craig, 1001 Nichols Street.

Mrs. Simcoe had been in failing health for eight years. She suffered at stroke of paralysis on December 16, 1933 and since that time had been in ill health.

Mrs. Simcoe was born July 20, 1851, in the Richland community of Callaway county, north of Fulton, the daughter of William T. and Sidney Smith Craig, pioneers of the Kingdom, who came from Kentucky and Virginia, respectively. She spent her entire life in Callaway county, except for two years in Texas.

She was married November 25, 1886 to Samuel W. Simcoe, who died in 1923. Mrs. Simcoe had no children of her own but reared two, Mrs. Harry McClellan and Willard Smith. She also leaves two brothers and a sister; George Elly Craig, McCredie; R. S. Craig, Fulton; and Mrs. Belle Wallace, McCredie, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Mrs. Simcoe united with the Richland Baptist Church early in life but moved her membership to the Fulton church later. She had been residing with her brother in Fulton since 1933. She was familiarly known by her neighbors and friends as "Auntie" and numbered her friends by her acquaintances. She bore her long suffering with patience and her passing brings sincere regret to a host of friends.
