He was raised by his grandmother, Eliza Herring Carrington (my great grandmother). He was still living with his grandmother in 1930 after he was married. His uncle, Jack Carrington (my grandfather) was 8 years older than him and they grew up together, more as brothers. My mother visited Russel (he went by the name of Russel not John) and his family whenever we made the trip to Fulton, while I was growing up. They were 1st cousins. I have very vague memories of going to his house when I was a child.
Altho his father's family spelled their name Craghead, Russel spelled his Craighead.
Per the Cra(i)ghead book:
"Russell's mother having died when he was a tiny baby, he was reared by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Carrington, who was a granddaughter of John Herring. Though he has not made the aquaintances of many of his Craghead relatives, we are told by some who do know him that he is a very fine boy and has a nice family. He was especially kind to his Aunt Minnie Craghead Raps on his frequent visits to her before her death, and often brought her beautiful flowers."

Prior to his marriage, he was a school teacher and also farmed, both near Toledo and later near Auxvasse. In 1905, for the benefit of the health of his daughter, Lena, threatened by T.B., he brought his family to Hodgeman Co., Kansas. they settled on a farm 9 miles southwest of Jetmore, in the Holbrock community where his children attended school, and where he farmed and raised cattle. He lived 5 miles southwest of Fulton. Death certificates states he lived in Callaway Co., all his life, but says he was born in Pike Co., Missouri. I have not seen any evidence of his family living in Pike Co., Missouri. His mother gave the information for the death certificate, I'm sure she knew where he was born, but it could be an error on death certificate.
He committed suicide, 410 gage shot gun woulnd just below the heart. He killed himself at home.
