Herbert "Herb" Royce Craghead, 66, of Rigby, Idaho, passed away Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at his home from complications of an illness.
He was born July 9, 1942, in Checotan, Okla. Herb was the third of eight children born to Allen Benjamin Craghead and Vera Mae White Craghead. The family moved to California, where Herb was raised and attended schools. He graduated from Marysville Union High School Class of 1960. After school, he joined the Southern California Carpenters Union, where he worked for 25 years as a master sheetrocker. Herb also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era.
He married Sherian Morby in 1962. They had a daughter, Kimberly, and they later divorced. Herb married Dedee Buchanan in California in 1968, mother of Ward and Stacy Buchanan. Sadly, Dedee passed away in 1985. In 1986, he married Jackie Lanfranco of California; they later divorced.
Herb moved to Las Vegas, and joined the Southern Nevada Carpenters Union, where he spent 10 years working as a finish carpenter on the new resort casinos. In 2001, he moved to Rigby, Idaho, to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren.
Herb was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed motocross riding, speedboats, camping and get-togethers with his friends.
Herb is survived by his daughter, Kim (Rex) Noreen of Rigby; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five sisters, Elva Redman of Wheatland, Calif., Phillis (Bill) Luke of Yuma, Ariz., Carletta Nissen of Yuba City, Calif., Linda (Rick) Ricker of Windsor, Calif., and Joyce (David) Young of Canyon City, Colo.; and two brothers, Norman (Wilma) Craghead and Gary (Judy) Craghead of Tigard, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers-in-law. A family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial arrangements are under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby. | Herbert Royce Craghead Or Craighead

Small newspaper item mentions him sending peaches to his sister Medora in 1911, he was living in Colorado at that time:

September 22, 1911
Mrs. Medora Howe, of East Fifth street, received a crate of peaches a few days ago from her brother, J.D. From the Cra(i)ghead book:
James L. "Walking Jim" Craighead was called Walking Jim because he was forever taking long hikes. He was considered eccentric and some say he was just plain contrary. He was a Baptist, while all the rest of Isaiah's and Robert's families were Methodists. He was a close friend of his cousin :Unity John", so may have changed to Baptist belief on that account. He would walk and ponder - and had vry definite ideas. Often he would arrive at wrong conclusions, yet many of them were also right. It is said that people of high intelligence respected his opinions and judgement to the extent of seeking him out for advice.
James had no children by either wife, but his 2nd wife was mother of Julia Mattox, who married Patrick Craighead. | James L. Craghead Or Craighead

Jas. L. Craghead Dead
Died, at his home in this city on Thursday, May 4th, 1893, James L. Craghead, aged 83 years and 4 months.
Uncle Jimmie, as we called him, came to Missouri with his parents in 1839. His father, Isaiah Craghead was raised in Franklin county, VA, and moved to Missouri with his family consisting of five sons, John R., George H., Jas. L., Isaiah W., W. A. B. Craghead, and two daughters Jane and Nancy F., all of whom have passed away now except Wm. A. B. and Mrs. Nancy F. Bradley.
Uncle Jimmie professed religion in 1837 and joined the Methodist church and lived in that church until about 1846, his wife who was Miss Mary Williamson, belonged to the Missionary Baptist church and he withdrew for the Methodist and joined his wife in the Baptist, and lived in that church a worthy and acceptable member until a few years back he withdrew and joined the Old Baptist Church.
Uncle Jimmie was in many respects a remarkable man. Strong, vigorous and powerful in physical manhood, a man with strong mind, tenacious of his own convictions, courageous in maintaining his opinions and steadfast in his religious beliefs. He was a man of cheerful temperment and leaves a host of friends to sympathize with his bereaved widow, his second wife, Mrs Nancy Maddox, to whom he was married some three years ago.
He had made his home in Callaway continuously since he come here in 1839. He leaves no children.
Peace to his ashes. | James L. Craghead Or Craighead

Uncle Jimmie Craghead
After an illness of several weeks, Uncle Jimmie Craghead died at his residence in this city May 5th. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church and burial at the new cemetary. He had been in declining health for several months and death came from general debility and old age. He had a iron constitution, and in his younger days had the endurance almost of a horse. In fact, in his palmy days he could out walk a horse for a long distance having made a race of that kind once from St. Charles to Fulton. He never had but little use for a horse or vehicle but used to start out and walk all over the country. He was a man of powerful frame and his strength was phenomenal. He was a stone mason by trade and would lift large stones that ordinarily were a load for two or three men.
He was born in VA on Jan. 4, 1810 and was 83 years and 4 months old. He came to this county in 1829 and resided here continuously until his death. He first married a Miss Williamson with whom he lived happily up to five or six years ago when she died and about three years ago he again married Mrs. Mattox, who survives him. He never had any children.
He was a man of fixed convictions and took the bible literally throughout and claimed that our Savior never used any figurative language. In an argument on scripture once the writer heard a man ask uncle Jim if the passage "feed my sheep" meant sheep, and he said it did. He claimed the earth revolved from west to east at a very rapid rate-much faster than a railroad train could run. He replied if that was the fact a man could go up in a balloon in San Francisco and in a little while drop down in New York.
He was an Ironside Baptist and was unswerving in his faith. He was a unique character and his characteristics were peculiar and interesting. He had his likes and dislikes and generally took a lively interest in politics and whenever he took a stand on any question he was there to stay. When once committed on any question he never changed- argument had no effect whatever on him. He had a deep insight into human nature and no sharper could deceive him. He would have been in his palmy one of the hardest men to bunco in the United States. You couldn't fool him. He seemed to have an instinctive perception of a fraud and was utterly devoid of gullibility. A lightning rod peddler, or any other sharper would drop him like a hot potato. His insight into human nature with all its weaknesses, seemed to be wonderful. During a hot political canvass in this county, the writer heard a man tell Uncle Jim how he was going to vote and his reasons for doing so. The writer had no doubt of the man's statement, but as soon as the man walked away Uncle Jim said that fellow is not going to do what he says. He was asked how he knew. He said he did not know how he knew it, but, says he, "I am certain of it." In order to test this instinctive knowledge, another man who was on the opposite side of the question was sent to this man to find out where he stood and he proved to be a spy in Uncle Jim's Camp. In a political fight he knew his friends and foes by instinct and his knowledge was as unerring as a bee in a hive or bird building its nest.
He was a character worthy of being studied. There was but one Uncle Jim Craghead and there will never be another. He was absolutely destitute of the sense of fear and you might has as well try to bull doze the British navy as him. He with all of his erratic, peculiar traits, and many good qualities are worthy to be remembered. | James L. Craghead Or Craighead

Per the Cra(i)ghead book:
Mrs. Lamar tells the following story about James Craghead, her mother's brother:
"James was hung by enemy soldiers during the Civil War. But when they rode away his mother rushed out with the butcher knife and cut him down. Then she dressed him as a girl and took him to the ferry, or boat, and said he was a school-teacher who wanted to cross, but was ill and must lie dowm. He was smuggled across to his Uncle Wesley Blount, sheriff of Osage Co., (Mo.) and remained there, later marrying his cousin." Mrs. Lamar adds that her mother told her that Grandmother said that the captain of the boat looked askance at James' heavy boots, though he had a small foot, but let him go across as 'Miss Agee'." | James R. Children's birth order is based on some actual birth dates, marriage dates, and some guesses.
From the Cra(i)ghead book:
John Craghead was one of the executors of his father's estate and fell heir to the home in which he was then living on Staunton River. He is said to have spent his entire life in the county of his birth, Franklin, Virginia. There, he first appears on the tax lists in 1795 and his first acreage is given as 341 A. on Staunton River. From 1809 to 1826 he is listed as owner of 550 A. of land.
The Craghead home was one mile from Staunton (Roanoke) River, which separates Franklin from Bedford County. The house was built of brick made on the farm. The four wide walkways leading from the house are also of brick, and were lined with beautiful native boxwoods. John had several slaves.

I just got back from going to see my parents in Roanoke, VA. and decided to see if I could locate the 1799 house of John Craghead. Found it 09/08/00. The house is still in great condition on the exterior as I could not see the inside for no one was there. Also found the cemetery off the property and found it to be in poor condition. Only two tombstones readable with dozens of broken and unreadable stones standing. The two that were readable were for Sallie "Powell" Craghead born Jan. 16 1776, Died Nov. 21, 1876, age 100 years and 10 months. The other which was on the ground and broken in two pieces was for John Craghead born Sept 25, 1771 Died Jan 24, 1859. The names on the tombstone have the last name spelled Craghead not Craighead. | John Craghead Or Craighead

From the Cra(i)ghead book:
b: abt. 1742 - 43 or earlier, tax-payer in Bedford Co., Virginia 1782 - 85, and living in Franklin Co., Virginia thereafter. Will probated 1808, naming wife Betty, and 11 children. Married 3 times.
Elizabeth Hale Betsey Robinson, 2nd and 3rd wives.
John Craghead, of Franklin Co., Va., 1786 until his death 1808. Having a dau of marriageable age in 1785, he was probably born not later than 1746, tho perhaps earlier. His will was dated May 29, 1808 and probated July 4th 1808; names wife Betty, and 12 children. Evidence seems to show that he married 3 times, but his 1st wife was mother of all his children except the youngest Lucy Robinson Craghead, daughter of his 3rd wife.
He is found of the Bedford Co., Virginia tax list, 1782; 1 poll and 2 slaves.
He is mentioned many times in the court records of Franklin Co., Va., from the time it was organized in Feb. 1786 to May 1789. The first record there of his name, is dated March 1786 when a suit; Stone Ass(ign)ee vs Aday & Craighead is filed and set aside. In Dec. the same year, a suit: Squires vs Craghead, dismissed with plaintiff paying costs.
Also, in May that year, a deed from John Craghead to Peter Craghead's orphans is acknowledged and recored: and a month later, a deed from him to George Key (son in law); and another from John Pratis recorded.
In May term of court, 1788, is a suit: John Hale vs John Craghead, John Camp (Kemp)(brother in law) and James Hale (son in law), and Elijah Hatcher (son in law of Elizabeth Hale, Wid.) are among the witnesses for the latter. In Aug. that year, the jury did not agree, but in November the verdict was returned for the defendant.
Several times during the years 1788 and 1789 John Craghead is sworn on the jury. Feb. 1788 he is on of a committee appointed to view a road from Hale's Ford on Staunton River across the country south, to cross Black Water near John Cragheas' and to lead into the road that goes by Black Place at the mouth of Snow Creek and make a report thereof.
In Dec. 1788: "Leave is granted to John Craghead to build a water grist mill on the Gills Creek he being proprietor on both sides of said creek." On Jan. 5, 1789, John Craghead is chosen on a committee to "view and mark out a way for a road the nearest and best way from Chestnut Road x Pig River and Black Water to Stanton to intersect the Meadow Road leading to Lynches Ferry, and make a report thereof to the court.

Death of John A. Craighead
Died, at his home in Carrington, suddenly, Friday night, June 21, 1901, John A. Craighead, aged 61 years. Mr Craighead was a well-known citizen and had been engaged in business in Carrington for many years, until a few months since, when his health failed and he retired. We have known the deceased for many years an always found him a gentleman and good business man. His sudden death will be regretted by his many friends. He leaves a wife, three sons and one daughter to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and indulgent father. His burial will take place this Monday morning at Auxvasse, under the control of the Masonic fraternity, of which he was a prominent member | John Alexander Craghead Or Craighead

In 1860 he was living with I.O. Craghead family, working as a teacher. He is listed as born in Ohio on all census forms.
It is believed that generations back, this Craghead family was linked to my Craghead family. His ancestor 1st in America was a Rev. Alexander Craghead who first settled in Virginia, then Pennsylvania. See Cra(i)gheads in Missouri book. He is believed to be a cousin of my Craghead family.
The fact that he was living with my Cragheads in 1860 strengthens the possibility that they were related.
