Reuben Clatterbuck was born on December 20, 1759 in Caroline County, Virginia, near Mount Church on the Rappahannock River, the son of Richard "Dick" Clatterbuck and Elizabeth "Betty" Massey. He had at least three siblings, John, Sally and Lucy.
Reuben served as a private on three separate occasions during the Revolutionary War. His pension hearing was held in 1833 and a pension was granted.
Reuben married Martha "Patsy" Griffin in 1782 at St. Mary's Parish, Mount Church in Caroline County, Virginia. She was the daughter of LeRoy Griffin and Elizabeth "Betty" Jeter. Together they had 9 known children: Mary Elizabeth Clatterbuck, Nancy Clatterbuck Dorton, Caroline Clatterbuck Griffin, John C. Clatterbuck, Leroy Clatterbuck, James Clatterbuck, Micagor Cageby Clatterbuck, Richard Clatterbuck, and William Getter Clatterbuck.
In about 1810 Reuben and his children moved to Shelby County Kentucky. During this time his daughter, Mary Elizabeth and her husband, Reuben Standley, were supposedly killed in a house fire. The census data in 1830 shows several younger children living with Reuben and Martha. They may have been Mary and John's children.
Reuben and Martha lived in Shelby County Kentucky until about 1829 when he followed his sons to Callaway County, Missouri and received a government track of land on November 26, 1829. He received a second land grand on January 31, 1831. Reuben established a farm there, and his descendants populated the area around Cedar Creek, in both Callaway County and Boone County. Some still live in that area today. | Reuben Clatterbuck

Local seniors brighten days of nursing home residents
By DON NORFLEET
The Fulton Sun
Vernon Clatterbuck of Fulton enjoys toe-tapping music as a way bring joy to the lives of people around him.
For the last 18 years, Clatterbuck has been playing in country bands performing at mid-Missouri nursing homes.
Although he's much older than many of the people confined to nursing homes, Clatterbuck still performs on a regular basis.
At age 89, he heads the Callaway Combo, a gospel and country music group. He's been playing with the same group, which has had various names, during the last 18 years.
"I enjoy entertaining, no doubt about it. But the main reason," he says, "is the response we get while playing in nursing homes. I get a lot of satisfaction in seeing the reaction of people as we make their day a little brighter. I'll never forget the day I had to take my mother to a nursing home. It was the worst day of my life. I just feel better helping to make people there happier."
Sharon Dickson, who works for Callaway County Special Services, is the band's program director and keeps records for the group. She enjoys singing gospel songs with the group.
She says the band specializes in gospel and country music made popular in the 1940s and 1950s.
"We are a Christian group. There is a prayer before every performance," Dickson says.
The group ends every performance with the Pledge of Allegiance, "God Bless America," and "I'll Fly Away."
The band has scaled back its schedule. At one time the group traveled more than 12,000 miles a year and volunteered 2,000 hours a year.
Its regular schedule now, Dickson says, is the first Monday of the month, practice; the first Friday, perform at Heisinger Bluffs in Jefferson City; second Monday, Fulton Manor Care Center, Fulton; third Monday, Fulton Nursing and Rehab; and the third Friday, Presbyterian Manor in Fulton.
Dickson says some of the popular songs are "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," "When You're Smiling," "This Land Is Your Land," "Deep in the Heart of Texas," "Old Rugged Cross," "Standing on the Promises," and "Amazing Grace."
"It's the people who you perform for in nursing homes that motivate you. Very often they will tell you how much they enjoyed the performance and want to know when you are coming back," Dickson says.
The original four members of the band were Clatterbuck on electric bass; Roy Carrington, rhythm guitar; Jon O'Neal, keyboard and piano; and Pete Hopkins, violin.
Later Frank Schroeder, lead guitar and singer, and Glenn Dickson, saxophone, were added to the band.
Current members of the band are Vernon Clatterbuck leader and electric bass; Emily Clatterbuck, vocals; Sharon Dickson, vocals; Frank Schroeder, lead and rhythm guitar and vocals; Mary Mosley, who joined the Combo in January of 2007, violin; Ruthie Lindemann of Reform, the emcee and song leader; Betty Salmons of Fulton, vocals, who joined the group in 2003; Nellie Turner of Fulton, has been a singer and emcee for the group for many years; Bill and Brenda Wormsley of Holts Summit, who both are employed by the state, joined the Combo in January of 2008; and Iona Beck of Frankenstein, who plays piano with the group when it performs in Jefferson City and Brenda Wormsley, who plays piano when the Combo performs in Fulton.
Clatterbuck is the bandleader and his wife Emily sings with the group. He was one of the original musicians to start the group in 1990, which originally was called the Serve Band when SERVE and the Callaway Senior Center were linked. After they were split apart, the band's name was changed to the New Serve Band. At the suggestion of the late Glenn Dickson, the name of the band later was changed to the Callaway Combo.
Clatterbuck's wife joined the group when she retired from Central Bank in 1996.
A native of Callaway County and a veteran of World War II, Clatterbuck is retired from the Missouri Highway Department.
Between the two of them, they have three daughters and one son. They also have seven grandchildren, all of whom are married. They also have 18 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.
They are members of the Dry Fork Baptist Church in Guthrie.
Clatterbuck is the last surviving member of the original Callaway Combo.
Many people have performed with the groups through the years. Some have moved on to other groups but age and health issues have taken the biggest toll.
Clatterbuck, who will be 90 in September, is not only the leader of the band but also is in his 27th year as a volunteer. He began as a volunteer for homebound meals. He delivered a rural route in Holts Summit that required him to drive 40 miles each week. "I took meals to homebound people for 12 years, starting in 1982," he said.
He recalls one occasion when he delivered a meal to a home and a cat was always resting in the window. But one time there was no cat in the window. So he entered the home and he heard a woman calling for help in the bedroom. She had fallen. Clatterbuck helped her up and got medical assistance for her.
"That's just one of many ways we helped people," Clatterbuck says, "It was a rewarding experience." | Vernon Clatterbuck

From a History of NE Missouri by Willian Bryan, 1913
"William Samuel Clatterbuck was born on the old homestead farm of his father, about seven miles west of New Bloomfield, on the 12th of July, 1841, and his entire active career wsa one of close and successful identification with agriculture and stock growing. He gave loyal and gallant service as a soldier of the Confederacy in the Civil War in which he served under General Price and Cockerell, and during his long and faithful service he lived up to the full tension of the great conflict. He took part in many important engagements, was wounded in battle at Franklin, Tennessee, and was captured by the enemy, having been held as a prisoner of war for a period of about one month. He is the owner of a valuable farm of two hundred and eighty five acres, about one and three fourths miles distant from New Bloomfield and he there devotes his attention to diversified agriculture and the raising of stock, including thouroughbread cattle of registered line and also high grade Duroc Jersey swine, as well as horses and mules. Industry and well ordered enterprise have brought to him a generous measure of success and he commands in his native county the unqualified confidence and esteem of all who know him. He is a stalwart advocate of the principles and policies for which the Democratic party stands sponsor and both he and his wife hold membership in the Baptist Church." | William Samuel Clatterbuck

Mrs. Mina C. Wickell, age 95, of Fulton, died on November 13, 2007, at the Presbyterian Manor where she had resided for four years. She was born on November 25, 1911, in Elton, Wisconsin, the daughter of Benjamin and Julia (Bowen) Clifton. On July 10, 1929, she married Henry H. Wickell in Fulton. He preceded her in death on April 10, 1995.
From this marriage were born five children. Mrs. Wickell is survived by two sons, Robert C. (wife Barbara Marie Wickell) of Clarkston, Michigan; Daniel G. (wife Barbara Key Wickell) of Chicago, Illinois; three daughters, June (husband Maurice "Rip" Russell) of Fulton; Lola J. (husband Jan P. Herring) of Bloomfield, Connecticut; Virginia Simmons (partner Paul Carver) of Fulton; eight grandchildren, Shauna Russell Qualls, Merrill (Terry) Russell, Rita Russell Adams, Cynthia McDaniel Gilmer, Daniel K. Wickell, Julie Wickell Mitchell, Georgianna Herring Collins and Pamela Herring Gray; twenty great-grandchildren; three great, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was affectionately known as "Grammie".
She also was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Dallas "Boots" Clifton, Thomas "Tom" Clifton, Homer Clifton, and William "Bill" Clifton; four sisters, Mazie Clifton, Mabel Clifton Durham, Berniece Clifton Dolan, and Pearl Clifton Chapman; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Wickell worked for LaCrosse Lumber Company off and on for over 30 years. She worked at the First National Bank from 1965 until her retirement in 1980. She served as a volunteer deliverer for Meals On Wheels for seven years.
Mrs. Wickell joined the Court Street United Methodist Church in 1931 and was an active member most of her life. She was an original and lifetime member of the women's Nora Esther Circle and served as treasurer of the annual Methodist Christmas Bazaar for many years. She was a former member of the Rebekkahs. Mrs. Wickell was a member of the Fulton Garden Club for several years and was well known for the beautiful roses that she grew in her yard. She was a superb cook who made some of the best holiday meals. Most importantly, she was a loving mother and grandmother who cherished her children and grandchildren and always took time for each one of them. Mrs. Wickell was a fine woman and kindhearted person who truly cared for others in her community. She will be so sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 23, 2007, at the Court Street United Methodist Church in Fulton with Rev. Diana L. Loomis officiating. Burial will follow at Callaway Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends on Friday from 12:30 until time of service at the church.

She lived at 1244 N. Main Street, Nevada, Vernon Co., Missouri at the time of her death. She died at home. Her son, Med Craighead gave the information for her death certificate. His address was also Nevada, Missouri.
Her parents were John Klingman and Latica (Morgen or Wilson), both originally of Virginia. Her birth date is given as April 2, 1850, which is probably not correct. She was listed as 2 years old with a younger sister in 1850. Death cert. says she was born in Virginia, but she was born in Callaway Co., Missouri.
According to the Cra(i)ghead book, Alfred died early and left 2 or 3 children who lived with various families. The Cra(i)ghead researchers were not able to trace the children or even name them. Rex and Med Craghead's birth certificates named their parents which is how I connected him.
I am a bit confused about the above however, because their mother lived a long time and son Med lived either with her or very near her when she died in 1932. I don't know why the family could not be traced or why the Craighead book had no information about their mother.
The last name of her mother, and Catherine's date of birth is a bit off. Could have been a transcription error on the marriage of her parents. See their information. | Catherine D. Clingman

Children Catherine and Sarah's ages do not make sense. Catherine's death certificate says she was born in 1850, but 1850 census shows her 2 years old in 1850, 1860 census shows her 9 years old... and Sarah was 9 months old in 1850 census, but in 1860 she wasn't born until 1853. I believe the 1850 census was more accurate.
The two oldest daughters must have been by a first wife.
something is definately off about the dates and ages of children. If Catherine was born in 1848 as it shows on 1850 census, and her birthday on her death certificate is correct for the month and day, she was born one month before her parents married. I don't see how she could have been born in 1850 as her death certificate says tho, because she's listed as being 2 years old in 1850 and her sister Sarah already 9 months old in 1850. So the 1860 census which lists Catherine as 9 years old and Sarah as only 7 years old, is incorrect. | James Clingman
