Carter Will Probated
The last will and testament of W.R. Carter, who died at his home, in this city last week, was probated Monday and the widow, Mrs. Ella Flemming Carter acts as executrix without bond. The Carter estate includes in reality property, the home place on West Seventh street, the ten acre Ausphal suburban tract, two business buildings on Fourth street and tenement property in northwest Fulton. Mr. Carter willed all his possessions to Mrs. Carter, to be owned by her as long as she remains a widow, and in case she re-marries the property then goes to his only son, W.R. Carter, Jr., except her right of dower and legal share in the estate.

1854 William R. Carter Dead
William R. Carter, 55 years old, died at his home in this city, Wednesday night at 10:00 o'clock after a complicated illness lasting about a year. Burial will take place at the Fulton new cemetery, Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock after funer services at the Catholic church, conducted by Rev. Fr. J. Gilifiliam, of Jefferson City.
He is survived by his wife and one son, W.R. Carter Jr., besides four sisters and one brother; Mrs. Mary Calvert, of Boone county; Mrs. Ellen Grogan, of St. Louis; Mrs. Nannie Powell, of Clipper Mills, Cal.; Miss Bettie Carter and John Carter, of Fulton. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Carter, and was born on a farm a mile northwest of town.
Congenial of disposition and of kindly nature, he enjoyed friends, loved his family, and found pleasure in life. He was big-hearted and companionable and because of his death many beside those who were near to him will mourn and regret his sad taking away. The sorrowing ones have the sympathy of all.

1858 From Albemarle Co. marriage records:
John Herring married Lucy Carver 16 Dec 1818; bondsman, Jarrell Carver (father) who gives his consent; witness, William Wertenbaker.

familysearch.org has a Jurald Carver marrying Nancy Beck 16 Oct 1795 Charlottesville, Albemarle, Virginia. Henry J Beck (ancestry world tree) adds that "this marriage bond was signed by Ruben Beck. Jarrell Carver spelled Jurald Carver on marriage bond" but is not certain that this is the right Jarrell Carver.
Jarrell Carver

1859 Herring - In Callaway County, Mo., March 30, 1873, Mrs. Lucy Herring, in the 77th year of her age.
The subject of this notice was born in Albemarle County, Va., on the 16th of April, 1796. She, with her husband and family emigrated to this state in the fall of 1838, since which time she has resided in this county, She united with the Christian church at Mount Tabor in 1843, and for 30 years she adorned her profession by her blameless and upright walk, and practical exhibition of those graces which form the Christian character. Her's was a religion, which in it's mission of mercy and love, sought to minister at the bedside of affliction, to relieve the wants of the poor and needy, and by words of cheer and encouragement, to comfort the desponding heart. To know "Grandma" Herring was to love her; and by her many friends (enemies she had none) her memory will long be cherished with mingled emotions of love and admiration. But this bereavement is more deeply felt by the surviving members of her own family, who can realize in her they have lost all that is embraced in the enduring name - Mother. To them be the consoling thought that in a ripe old age she has fallen asleep to reap the reward inherited only by the finally faithful.
Lucy Carver

1860 In 1870, she was living with son Thomas and his family. Her property valued at $2,000 personal property $100. Since her property was listed and no property value for Thomas, even tho she was not listed as head of house, they were probably living on her property.

The book, A History of Callaway County 1884, lists her birth as 1796 and death as March 30, 1873.

She married Clarence D. Blackburn on Oct. 22, 1919, in Herrmann, Gasconade Co., MO. He survives at the home. Also surviving are two daughters, Maxine Thomas of Mokane and Betty Eikel of Mexico; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers; four sisters; one daughter, Pearl Hays; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 17, 1986, at 2 p.m. in the Browning-Debo Chapel. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery at Reedsville with the Rev. Dennis Morgan officiating. Visitation will be Friday, May 16, 1986, after 4 p.m. in the Browning-Debo Chapel.

1862 married 16 Dec 1818 Polly Carver (daughter of Jarrell Carver) sister of Lucy Carver
George & Polly Carver 16 Dec 1818; b-Jarrell Carver (father) who gives his consent wit-William Wertenbaker [B/C Papers, 1818-24]
John & Lucy Carver 3 Dec 1818; min-John Goss, 3Decl818 [Marr. Reg., 1806-1868, fol.23] b-George Carver wit- William Wertenbaker d- Jarrel Carver [B/C Papers, 1818-24]

Polly Carver, sister of Lucy Carver, was the 1st wife of GWH Sr.

*****************
Total Speculation at this point --
The theoy is that George and Polly may have had a son born July 10 1823 and named him GWH Jr. Polly died in childbirth, the baby was given to George's brother John to raise because John's wife was Polly's sister. This GWH Jr was not listed on the LDS files with the rest of John and Lucy's children. In 1825 George came to Missouri with his cousin John B. Herring to look for land, they were gone possibly as long as a year. On the 1850 Mo. census, GWH Jr. was married and living next door to GWH Sr., giving his name to the census taker as Jr. When George and Lucy Simco Herring began having children, they did not name any of their sons GWH Jr, until 1846, their 8th child. At the time GWJ Jr. was born, the first son, GWH Jr., was grown and married, perhaps this is why they felt it was alright to name a son GWH Jr. We do not have absolute proof of this, however, the names on the census in 1850 and the LDS files leaving him out as a son of John and Lucy Carver when they had every other child of their listed, certainly leads to speculation. Why they did not take back the original son after George and Lucy married could be explained by the fact that the child was at that time almost 7 years old, was living with the only parents he had ever known. Since George knew he was going to still be a neighbor of his brother and able to see this child whenenver he wanted, it doesn't seem likely to me that they would have taken the child back. If this later proves to be true, it changes all the relationships that I have from the John and Lucy Carver line... GWH Jr. #1 and GWH Jr. #2 would have been half brothers... and both of them were my Great and Great Great Grandfathers. #1 being the father of Eliza S. Herring Carrington and #2 being the father of Dolor Herring.
speculation only

1880 - His wife and youngest daughter, even tho listed at home, it said on census "living at poor farm". I did find them both listed seperately at the poor farm. Son George, who was 16, was living with a Dixon family, working on their farm as a laborer.

In 1900, he is living with his mother, listed as an invalid. Also listed as a widower, but I believe his wife is still alive, just not with him anymore. The 1900 census had some wrong information, age of his mother, number of children she had, etc.

He died in the county infirmary (formerly the county poor house) and was buried there. There are no other records of the cemetery there.

From the History of Callaway County Missouri 1884 book, which is not always accurate:
John D. Cason, a large landholder and successful farmer of Cedar township, was born in this county on the 21st of May, 1842, and was a son of Benjamin and Anna E. (Overton) Cason. The father was originally from Scott county, Kentucky, and was married three times. He came out to Missouri a young man and was married the first time to Miss Mary J. Hawkins, of Howard county. She died, leaving him one son, William H., now deceased. His second wife was previously Miss Anna E. Overton, of Callaway county, but originally from Woodford county, Kentucky. She died, leaving him five children: Sarah E. (deceased), John D., Andrew J. (deceased), Mary E. (deceased) and Benjamin F. The father's last wife was Mrs. Fannie M. Hardin, daughter of Samuel Kennon, of Boone county. There were no children by this union. The father died leaving a large estate. He was a successful farmer and highly respected citizen.
