Didn't see anyone listed living with them and also didn't see any children listed in the wife's obit. According to her obit in 1986 it looks like they retired and moved to Tucson, Ariz. John G. Carter Dead
John G. Carter aged 87 years, died at his home on West Fourth Street at midnight last Thursday night. Considering his age, he has been remarkably vigorous up to six weeks ago when he was attacked by la grippe, which, complicated by other diseases, brought about his death.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning at the residence by Rev. William Castle and burial was in the new cemetery with Odd Fellow honors. Mr. Carter had been a member of the Methodist Church for over 30 years, and of the Odd Fellows for over 50 years.
He was born in Green Co., Kentucky on July 25, 1820 and came to Missouri in the fall of 1841. He was married September 8, 1842 to Miss Matilda Herring, who died September 28, 1860. To them were born eight children, six of whom are living now, namely: John R. Carter, William R. Carter, and Miss Bettie Carter, all of Fulton; Mrs. Mary Calvert of Boone county, Mrs. Ellen Grogan of St. Louis, and Mrs. Nannie Powell of California. Mr. Carter was married a second time, September 11, 1865, to Miss Louisa Jane Hendrix, who died January 23, 1905. He served as constable of Fulton township for 14 years and was a justice of the peace 33 years holding the latter office at the time of his death.
Few men in Callaway have lived a more active life than that of Mr. Carter. He was widely known and generally respected. Kindly in heart, warm in his friendships, faithful in his lodge, indulgent and loving in his home, he had the friendship of people of all classes and his death is especially regretted. | John G. Carter

John G. CARTER and Matilda HERRING were married 7 Sep 1842 in Callaway County MO.
John G. CARTER was born 25 Jul 1820 KY and died 20 Feb 1908 in Callaway County MO.
According to his obituary, he was buried in Hillcrest cemetery, Fulton Missour, we have not yet been able to find his grave. We have searched the burial records at the Fulton court house. There is a second entry under John R. Carter, purchasing a grave in the Carter family plot. This grave was entered as if it was a 2nd grave for John R. Carter. We believe it is the grave of his father, John G. Carter. There is an empty space to the left of the large Carter monument, and there is a base stone in the ground without the marker. John G. Carter's daughter, Bette (Martha Elizabeth) was also buried in Hillcrest and there is no headstone. We believe they are both buried near the large family marker.

John G. Carter Dead
Passes Away at His Home in Fulton at the Age of 88 Years
At about the hour of midnight, Thursday, February 20, 1908, John G. Carter breathed his last at his home in Fulton. Until the last few years of his life he was vigorous and strong. He was a jovial, good-natured man and always of a happy disposition, looked upon the bright side of life. We have often listened to his stories of early pioneer life in Callaway county. In his earlier life he was an auctioneer and cried nearly all the sales in the community in which he lived. We had known him from our earliest childhood, and always loved him for his kind and loving disposition. He was a good man, a kind father, and affectionate husband. His neighbors all loved him for his charitable disposition. He was always ready to help those in distress. The following biography of his life was written by himself before his death and was found in the family Bible. It give the principle events of his life:
John G. Carter was born in Green county, Ky., July 25, 1820 and came to Missouri in the fall of 1841; was married to Miss Matilda J. Herring, September 8th, 1842, who departed this life September 28, 1860, in her 38th year. From that union, 8 children were born, one died in infancy. Thomas H. Carter, died in February, 1865, aged 4 years. The surviving 6 children at this date, March 1906, are: John R. Carter, Miss Bettie Carter, William R. Carter, residing in Fulton, Mrs. Mary Calvert of Boone county; Mrs. Ellen Grogan of St. Louis, Mrs. Nannie Powell of Clipper Mills, California.
On September 11th, 1865, Mr. Carter was married to Mrs. Louisa J. Hendrix; no children from that union; she departed this life January 23, 1905.
J.G. Carter became an Odd Fellow in 1857, was constable of Fulton township 14 years, has been Justice of the Peace thirty years and was again nominated May 26, 1906 for a term of four years.
The burial services were held Saturday morning under the auspices of Callaway Lodge No. 165, I.O.O.F. The funeral services were held at the residence, conducted by Rev. Wm. Castle of the Methodist church, a warm personal friend of the family and a brother Odd Fellow. | John G. Carter

John Robert Carter, aged 67 years, died at the home of his sister Mrs. Ella Grogan, in St. Louis Monday morning, August 22, 1910 at 10 o'clock. A few weeks since Mr. Carter went to St. Louis to consult a specialist concerning his physical condition which had not been good for several months. At first favorable reports were received concerning his condition, but he had a sudden change Sunday when the family here were notified of the fact. Early Monday morning E. Carter and his sister Miss Dollie, left here in an automobile to make connection at Mexico with the Wabash train, but arrived in St. Louis after the death of their father.
The deceased was born and reared near Fulton, but for forty years he has been a resident of this city and was well known to all our readers. Besides a widow, he leaves one son, T. Ed Carter and three daughters, Mrs. Ernest Blackburn, Mrs. D.W. Herring, and Miss Dollie Carter, who have the sympathy of their friends in this sad dispensation. He also has 4 sisters, with the immediate family, to mourn his death.
The funeral services over the remains of Mr. Carter were held at the new cemetery Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Odd Fellows and Rev. T.W. Alton. | John Robert Carter

John R. Carter Dead
John R. Carter, for many years a well-known citizen of Fulton, died Monday morning at 10:00 o'clock at the home of his sister, Mrs. Ellen Grogan, in St. Louis, where he had been for five weeks receiving treatment from a specialist for liver trouble. His body was brought to Fulton Wednesday afternoon and interred in the new cemetery. A short religious service was conducted at the grave by Rev. T. W. Alton, pastor of the Methodist church, and the burial service was conducted by the Odd Fellows.
Mr. Carter had been in ill health several months, and when he went to St. Louis he expressed doubt whether the trip would be beneficial. The first two weeks that he was there seemed to mark improvement in his condition, but afterward his decline was gradual.
Mr. Carter was born on a farm near Fulton on November 5, 1844. He grew to manhood in the country and married Miss Margaret Fletcher in 1869. Until a few years ago he was engaged in business in Fulton for many years and amassed a comfortable fortune.
He is survived by his wife, one son and three daughters. The children are T. Ed Carter, a grocery man of this city: Miss Dorothy Carter, Mrs. E.L. Blackburn and Mrs. D.W. Herring, all of Fulton. He also leaves four sisters namely: Mrs. Ellen Grogan of St. Louis: Mrs. Nannie Todd, of Hallsville: Mrs. Mary Calvert, of Hallsville: and Miss Bettie Carter, of Fulton.
Mr. Carter had a large circle of acquaintances and was well liked by those who knew him. He had many excellent qualities and will be greatly missed. | John Robert Carter

Dolor W. Herring Miss Josephine Carter 24 Jun 1909 I-384
Dolar and Josephine were second cousins and 3rd cousins once removed, in addition to being husband and wife. Their Simco grandmothers were sisters, and their Herring great grandfathers were brothers, originally from Albemarle Co., Virginia in the early 1830's.
Marriage date in her obituary is not correct.
My grandmother was a very tall lady. She always told me to stand up straight... I remember when she moved from the Court Street house back to the 9th Street house, it was probably in the mid 1950's. She rented the upstairs bedrooms out at the 9th Street house. That house is now restored and has a historical landmark plaque on the front. That's the house my father grew up in. I remember playing there as a child. My grandmother used to tell me silly old fashioned rhymes, that I still remember. She took me a few times to visit her cousins, Emma Sitton Thurston and Addie Sitton Sartor. They lived in a very old house on Nichols Street, and I wore gloves and had tea at their house. Emma and Addie lived together all their lives. My grandmother was a very old fashioned lady, something I'm very glad of, having the chance to learn the maners of proper ladies of the past.
She didn't particularly like the name Josephine, she went by Jo. My brother and I called her GrannyJo. She would come to our house in Illinios for a couple of weeks every summer. I remember driving to the train station with my dad to pick her up. She always arrived wearing a little fur collar and a hat. I don't remember ever seeing her go out without a hat. She always wore perfume that smelled like lillies, I can still remember the smell. She always called my father D.W. never David. Every time we went to Missouri to visit her, we always went out to Hillcrest cemetery to put flowers on the graves. She always went to where her daughters and husband were buried, then to where her parents and sisters were. We never went to any of the other Herring graves tho, I don't know why.
She played the organ at the Methodist Church in Fulton for many years. My dad got her a television in the late 1950's and she loved to watch Lawrence Welk. I was only 10 when she died, but I remember her very well. | Josephine Carter

Death certificate gives parents as Robert P. Carter and Polley Smith, which is important because it verifies the original letter written in the early 1970's from a Carter relative who knew that John G. Carter's parents were Robert P. Carter and Polly Mary Smith.
Her obituary gives Culpepper county Kentucky as her birthplace, there was no county by that name in Kentucky, however, her father was born in Culpepper county Virgina, so whoever gave the information for the obituary must have been thinking about that. As far as I have found records, they lived in Green county Kentucky when she was born. | Martha Bell Carter

Callaway Pioneer Is Dead
Mrs. Martha Craig Died This Morning at Her Home In McCredie.
Funeral Thursday Afternoon
Mrs. Martha B. Craig, 91 years old, died at her home in McCredie about 2:00 o'clock Wednesday morning after a week's illness. Funeral services were held at Richlan Baptist church, northeast of Fulton, Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock and burial was in the cemetery of that church.
Mrs. Craig was born in Culpepper county, Kentucky, July 24, 1831, and is the last of a family of six or eight children. She came to Missouri when a young woman, her maiden name being Miss Martha Carter. Her husband, the late James Tolliver Craig, died about twenty years ago. She is survived by four daughters and one son, all living in or near McCredie: R.N. Craig, Mrs. S.A. West, Mrs. J.W. Martin, Mrs. Virgil Epperson and Miss Mattie Lou Craig, who lived with her mother. Quite a number of relatives also are living in Fulton and other parts of the county.
Mrs. Craig was one of the pioneer women of Callaway who always lent her aid to the good causes of the county. Friends here extend sympathy to all those who mourn her death.
(note: born in Green Co., Kentucky not Culpepper, her parents were born in Culpepper Co., Virginia) | Martha Bell Carter

Miss Betty Carter Is Dead.
Native Fultonian Died Suddenly at Home of Her Sister in Boone County, Sunday Morning.
Miss Martha Elizabeth Carter, more familiarly known to her friends as Miss Betty Carter, died suddenly at the home of her sister, Mrs. Mary Calvert, at Brown Station, Boone County, about 10:00 o'clock, Sunday morning. She apparently had been in good health and death came most unexpectedly. She was almost 79 years of age.
The body was brought to Fulton, Sunday evening and funeral service was conducted at the home at 907 Court street at 3:00 o'clock Monday afternoon by the Rev. W. Garnet Alcorn, pastor of the First Christian church, of which Miss Carter was a member. Interment was in the family lot at Hillcrest cemetery, of this city.
Miss Carter was a daughter of the late John G. and Matilda Herring Carter. She was born on a farm just west of Fulton, Nov. 8, 1848 and grew to young womanhood there. Later she removed to Fulton, where the greater part of her life was spent. While here, she operated a dressmaking establishment, developing probably the largest business of it's kind in the city.
Besides the sister with whom she was visiting at the time of her death, the deceased leaves a second sister, Mrs. Nancy Powell, of Clipper Mills, Calif. One sister, Mrs. Ellen Grogan and two brothers, John R. Carter and W.R. Carter, proceded her in death.
Miss Carter formed a wide acquaintance among the people of Fulton and Callaway county, where she was well and favorably known, and she will be missed by many of the older citizens of the city, who were numbered among her acquaintance. | Martha Elizabeth "Bettie" Carter

The 1880 census for John R Carter shows a sister Bettie Carter, single, age 26, born in MO, Dress Maker.
Her father left all his children $1.00 in his will, but he made Bettie administrator and left her his property and the remainder of his estate.
Found on the 1910 census, unmarried, living with her brother William's family in Fulton on Court Street. Dressmaker
On 1920 census, living with Margaret Carter,.age 71
In 1927 she was living with her sister, Mary Carter Calvert family, and died there. Death certificate says she was buried in Fulton, Her obituary states she was buried in the Carter family plot at Hillcrest. There is no headstone for her, but there is room in the old family plot, so I assume either her headstone has been taken away or she never had one, Her father's headstone is also missing from the family plot there. | Martha Elizabeth "Bettie" Carter

By 1917, David and Maurine Carter McKee moved to Edgewood Park, Pennsylvania when he got a job teaching at a deaf school. His mother moved with them, she was listed on his draft card as a dependent along with his wife, it did not list any children.
I have not found out how or when he died, whether it was in WWI or some illness, but by 1920, Maurine Carter McKee was back in Fulton, Missouri, living with her family, and listed on the census as a widow. She married again later that year.

Mrs. Nova Rogers Dead
Mrs. Nova Rogers, wife of John H. Rogers died at her home north of Fulton, Thursday evening, May 21, 1908, after a brief illness. Burial was at the new cemetery in this city on Saturday after funeral services at the Methodist church by Rev. T.w. Alton.
She was 37 years old and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Carter, of fulton, who with the sorrowing husband, three sisters and one brother grieve for her. The sisters include Mrs. Ernest Blackburn and Misses Dorthy and Josephine Carter, and T. Ed Carter, of this city, is a brother of the deceased.
Mrs. Roger's death came as a sad shock to those who knew her in life as a noble woman, of robust constitution and always the picture of health, and her excellent character, coupled with the ties of friendship she had made, caused unbounded expression of regret when it was known that death had claimed her. She was a staunch member of the Methodist church and her everyday life was always an inspiration for good. The sympathy of all goes out to those to whom she was near and dear. | Nova Carter

letter from Ruth Carter Williams dated August 13, 1973 - sent to Jean McDonald, grandaughter of Alexander Carter, brother of John G. She lived in Fulton and is now deceased.
"Dear Mrs. McDonald, Our knowledge of our family history is pretty vague. We know that our great grandfather (in fact we knew him) was John G. Carter born in Greene Co. Ky. July 25, 1820 and lived in Fulton his adult life. We are prettty sure his parents were Robert and Polly Smith Carter. Robert P. Carter who was born in Culpepper Co. in 1790 to Thomas and Susannah Gaines Carter, we think is our great-great. There is a book "The History of the Carter Family" that tells about them. I have the book "Robert Carter of Nomini Hall" by Louis Morton pub. by University Press of Va. He was known as King Carter and the book is very interesting but we don't think we came from that family. I hope I have been of some help. Sincerely, Ruth Carter Williams August 13, 1973.
note: Ruth Carter was a daughter of Thomas Edward Carter, son of John R. Carter, son of John G. Carter.
