John Carrington

1719 Named as a living heir in his mother's will in 1803 John Carrington, Jr.

1720 The tax list of Charles County lower east hundred, 1782 lists "Carrington's Lott", 100 acres, valued at 62 pounds belonging to John Carrington. Also listed "some slaves", 2 free white males over 18, and 8 other persons in this household.

An assessment list of Charles County, 1798, lists Susanna Carrington, widow of John Sr. as owner of two houses, valued at $319.00, 98 acres of land valued at $239.00 in Port Tobacco, Hundred. She also owned two slaves.

Took the Oath of Allegiance in Charles Co., Maryland in 1778.

John Carrington most likely was descended from Timothy Carrington, who in 1716 was a resident of Charles Co., Maryland. Timothy was most likely descended from Samuel Carrington, and Irish emigrant to America in 1652. I have no sources to prove this, it is speculation in the manuscript by William Carrington.

They had one son who died young. A daughter Lena was a business woman in the west. Dimple taught at Chickasha, Oklahoma. Randa married and lived on a farm in Boone Co., Mo. -per Carrington Doc.
I found Lena working as a stenographer in Fulton and then on later census she was a patient in the Fulton State Asylum. I find no evidence that she ever "was a business women in the west".

1850 census does not list him, but does list an un-named infant, female.

Fulton Telegraph, December 29, 1911, front page story:
Find Woman Dead
Lydia Carrington Las Seen Alive Sunday Before Christmas
When Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Ramsey and their little daughter left their home at 814 Glen Aire street last Sunday morning to spend the Christmas holidays in the country, Miss Lydia Carrington, 24 years old, who roomed at their home, waved them a Merry Christmas as she stood on the front porch.
When they returned home at 10:30 o'clock last night they found the body of Miss Carrington, lying on a bed in her room. She evidently had been dead for several hours. A small overhead gas heater which was burning cast a yellow fitful glare over the two small rooms where Miss Carrington and her roommate, Miss Ella Nues, 23 years old, did light housekeeping. Miss Nues also had departed last Sunday morning to spend the holidays with her parents in Omaha.
How the young woman met her death is not known. The daily papers beginning with the issue of Monday morning were found lying on the front porch. The two small rooms were tightly closed and the windows securely fastened. A bottle half filled with chloroform was found on a washstand. The front door of the small housekeeping room was not locked, but a small piece of paper was found thrust into the keyhole. Dark stains on the bed clothing indicated that the young woman had died of convulsions.
Girl Not Despondent.
"I haven't the least idea what caused her death." declared Mrs. Ramsey last night. "When we left she was in fine spirits. She had been preparing her Christmas gifts and had bought herself a new coat and had made a new hat. I asked her if she was afraid to stay by herself, and she said that she could not get a girl friend to stay with her she would go over and stay with her cousin. She was not despondent and I do not know that she ever had any love affair. I know that no young men called at the house. When M. Ramsey tried the door when we came home he could not get the key in the lock. He then broke a basement window, went in an let me in at the front door. We turned on all the lights and then went upstairs and found her in her room."
Patrolman Dan Doran from No. 5 police station made an investigation, but declared that he found no marks of violence. The remnants of a breakfast were on the small table in the kitchen, but the table had been set for two people. Mrs. Ramsey said that it probably was the Sunday breakfast. Patrolman Doran said that he believed the young woman had died of convulsions.
Subject to Dizzy Spells
During the last two months, Miss Carrington had been subject to dizzy spells, Mrs. Ramsey said. W.E. White and his wife, the latter a cousin of Miss Carrington and who live at 1910 East Thirty-first street, were called, but said they had not seen Miss Carrington for nearly a year. The body was taken to the undertaking rooms of Freeman & Marshall by order of the coroner. The inquest will be held at 9 o'clock this morning.
Miss Carrington had lived at the home of Mrs. Ramsey since last June. She formerly roomed with Miss Julia Bennett. Miss Nues had roomed with her for the last two months. J (s/b N) D. Carrington, father of Miss Carrington, lives at Fulton, Mo. He was notified last night. - Kansas City, Journal, 27th.

Nat Carrington Ends His Own Life
Takes Carbolic Acid and Dies a Few Hours Later - Body Discovered in Barn.
Nat Carrington, who lives east of town, swallowed a large dose of carbolic acid Tuesday afternoon. Dr. G. D. McCall was called by telephone to his home a short time after Mr. Carrington took the dose and all efforts were made to save the unfortunate man, but death relived his suffering at 1:00 o'clock Wednesday.
Sometime Tuesday afternoon Mr. Carrington went to his barn a short distance from the house, climbed into the hay loft, poured the contents of a 1 ounce bottle of carbolic acid into a can and drank it. His groans were heard at the house, and was later discovered by the family.
Mr. Carrington has had more than his share of troubles in the past few years. It will be remembered a short time ago his daughter was found dead in her room at Kansas City. His son, a few weeks ago, forged his name to several checks, and several years ago his little daughter fell into a vat of boiling molasses, and was so badly burned that she died in a short time. His troubles are supposed to have unbalanced his mind, and caused him to take his own life. His remains were buried at 10:00 o'clock Thursday morning in the Burdette grave yard.

1749 Farmer Killed Himself
N.T. Carrington Took Carbolic Acid Tuesday Afternoon

Depressed by the recent death of his daughter and other family troubles, Nathan T. Carrington, 52 years old, residing on part of the A.I. Owen farm, one mile southeast of Fulton, took carbolic acid Tuesday afternoon and died Wednesday morning about 1:30 o'clock.
He went to the barn of Mrs. John Ballenger, near by, shortly after the noon hour to feed some stock and took the poison there. He was found about 3:00 o'clock by Frazier Maloney, who uses the barn, and was then in an unconscious condition. Dr. G.D. McCall, of Fulton, was summoned and administered an antidote, but the patient never recovered consciousness. He was taken from the barn to his residence and died there.
By his side in the barn was found a two-ounce bottle that had contained the acid. The poison had been poured into a cup from which he drank it. Some of it was spilled on his clothes, and the fact that he lived so long indicates that he took only a small amount of it.
Mr. Carrington was in Fulton Tuesday morning and walked out to his home for dinner. After dinner he told his family he was going out to do some work and nothing was thought of his absence. Recently he has been despondent, but it was not expected that he would try to commit suicide.
The death of a daughter in Kansas City under unusual circumstances during Christmas week, and the arrest of his oldest son two or three weeks ago on a charge of forgery, are supposed to have caused him to brood until his mind was unbalanced. A young daughter of Mr. Carrington's was burned to death in a molasses vat three years ago and the accident to preyed on his mind that he had to be placed in the State Hospital in Fulton for several months. He also made an effort to commit suicide several years ago.
Mr. Carrington was born and reared in this county and had lived in the vicinity southeast of Fulton the last twenty years. His wife was formerly a Miss Herring, and lived southwest of Fulton. Mrs. Carrington and five children are living. The children are; Mrs. O.T. Millard, Miss Dollie, Elmer, Carson, and Eula.
Funeral services were conducted at his home Thursday morning by Rev. T.E. Winter, pastor of the Fulton Christian church and burial was in the Burdette cemetery, near Ballenger Springs.
Mr. Carrington was an honest, hard-working man, and those who knew him thought well of him. All of his neighbors speak highly of him and regret his death.
