Notes from Pat McCallister
Mary was born in the log house- buried in Callaway Memorial Gardens - Fulton, MO
18 April 1917 - Mary graduated from the 8th grade - Callaway Co -Scott School - a mile or two down the road, south from her father's house.
M: Carson Dillard Carrington - 23 Dec 1919 - Fulton.
They lived at 409 Bluff Street in Fulton most all their married life.
The house was old when they lived there and on the bluff. Now there is a bridge crossing the expanse there.
Mother always told me the story about how Mary left home - but there is the picture of all the children, made at the farm about 1927. Mary is in the picture. The story goes that Mary and Iris were going to Columbia in the car with a young man, about 1919. Iris backed out and Rufus told Mary that she could not go alone with that man in the car by herself. Mary said there was nothing wrong with it and she was going. Rufus said that if she went, not to come back. She went and she did not come back. She married Jack, the young man. She would come to the farm and Rufus would go out to the barn or something. He wouldn't talk to her. This went on for years, until Linwood died, 1943. Rufus and Oddie went to Mexico to get on the train to go to Higginsville to the funeral. Mary and Rex [born 1938] were there also. When it was time to get on the train, Rufus picked up Mary's luggage and put them all on the train. That was the end of that. Mary was the one that took the most care of Rufus and Oddie. Then there is the picture made in about 1933/35 of all of them. Did my mother steer me wrong. I don't think I remember the story wrong. Was Rufus just cool to Mary? Did she really not come home that night. Mother would have been 11 or 12 years old. Did she have selective memory?
****************
Note from Mary Jo Herring Hubbard
Mary Wilks was my grandmother, I was named for her and for my father's mother Josephine Carter Herring. I do not have very clear memories of her, I was 5 when she died. I do remember going to the old bluff street house. It was very small, kitchen dining room living room and bedroom downstairs, and two small bedrooms in the attic. I remember her being in the kitchen all the time. I remember when she died and the whole family came, that little house was overflowing with people.
Note, Oct. 2007, we drove by the house, 409 Bluff St., Fulton, and someone is restoring the house, but they've pretty much torn down everything except the outside walls. There's not much there, don't know if they are going to actually fix it or just tear it down. Over the years since my grandfather moved out, the house had been deserted and fallen into terrible disrepair.
From her death certificate:
She died in the Callaway Hospital after a stay of one week. Her usual address was 409 Bluff Street, Fulton. Her husband, Jack Carrington, gave the information for her death certificate. She died of acute cerebral hemorrhage which occurred one week before her death. She had hypertension and arterosclerosis for years. She died at 9:35 p.m. The attending doctor was Henry Durst, MD. He last saw her alive on Feb. 20, 1957, he had been her doctor since March 1936. She was buried on Feb. 23, 1957 in Callaway Memorial Gardens, Fulton, Maupin funeral home, Fulton, was in charge of the funeral. | Mary Leona Wilks

Pat McAllister notes:
Her father called her Jim or Jimma. She was born in the log house. Virginia had TIAs and had some high blood pressure. She broke a hip and died a few months later, she was taking oxygen the last month
17 Mar 1917 - Virginia got a perfect attendance award
25 Mar 1921 - Virginia graduated from the 8th grade at Scott School - the one - room school house down the road. She did not get to go to high school. She was the last daughter for a while and her mother needed her at home.
.She made notes in a booklet. Says:We bought the green Chevy coupe from H. Ga ------ --(can't read) - had upstairs rooms with Mary and Jack at Ste-- house until they moved to the Bluff Street (409) We started housekeeping in 2 rooms with Mrs. Hills- shared bath -had kitchen and bedroom furniture and old love seat bought from Bessie for 2 or 2.50. Mary gave old day bed with the back off. Mrs. Hills had --- She notes the dates of marriage and birth of Bill, says he was born at the home of R. L. Brown - Grand Street - Fulton, MO then they moved to Bluff Street about June - they moved in with John (Paul's brother) - She said Billy rolled off the bed and had intestinal flu here They moved to (East) St. Louis and lived in the house with (sister) Iris and kept (her son) Tommy. Bill's first Xmas there but they went to mother's (Rufus Wilks') The kids fed Bill orange and he had diarrhea and had Dr. Stine. Paul (husband) worked for Sherman contracting. He left early and came in late. Neva Jean was born in East St. Louis in October, 1930 and then they went back to Fulton.
Bill and Jean had the 3 - day measles - They moved to Higginsville - Patty born in March, 1937, they bought the (1937) Plymouth. They built the house on 22nd Street, started it in 1941 and lived in the basement that winter.
1946 - June-left Higginsville and went to Fulton to tell everyone goodbye. We were going to CA with our 1937 Plymouth and pulling a 27 foot silver trailer to live in. Daddy did not like pulling the trailer and no one wanted to go to CA, so we didn't. We parked at Aunt Mary's house 409 Bluff Street. Then Daddy bought the apartment house and went back to work at International Shoe Co. He worked in the cutting room cutting our shoes. We lived there a year and in that year Aunt Frances died in February and Paul & Virginia celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. A lot of the family came.
1947 - went to Hamilton, MO. The company had made Paul a foreman in the cutting room in a brand new factory. We lived in an apartment house till the company got the house built that we were to live in. We lived there 20 months. Then the company moved Paul back to Higginsville. We lived there for a year. Paul built a small house- 611 W 29th Street. He couldn't find a place for us to live. About April 1950, we moved to Russellville, AR transferred again by the company. We lived in the Howell's garage apartment 110 W 8th Street till the company house on Cleveland Street became available a year later. It was built of concrete blocks and in that humid climate, it was not good. Things molded - mold grew on the leather shoes in the closets. In 1955, Paul built a house on Boston Street.
1957 - they were transferred to Jefferson City, MO. they also went that summer on vacation to Hobbs, NM to visit Virginia's sisters and their families and their daughter, Pat and family, who had gone there the year before.
1959 - they were transferred to Eldorado Springs, MO. Paul was tired of that and in the summer of 1960 we all moved to Springdale, AR and started a business - NAPA Jobber.
Notes Virginia made in later years about her life:
We were married [4/16/1927] just in time to face the depression. I had to quit work for the birth of my first child [1/26/1928] leaving my husband with just $10 salary over and above rent and furniture and car payments. We decided to move to St. Louis to find better pay. Then the depression really hit us He worked two days a week. We lived in a small 4 room tar paper house on the back of a lot owned by my brother [Ira Day Wilks]. There my second child was born [10/24/1930]. We had $10 to pay the doctor for delivering the baby at home. My brother [Ira=Judjie] lived with us to help buy groceries. He often said we ate beans and potatoes and ketchup one day, potatoes, beans and ketchup the next day. Catsup was home-made, potatoes home grown. Our garden was a life saver. I was thin and could not breast feed my first child. By the time the second child , I was afraid to feed it bottle. Feeling so gave her one breast feeding and one bottle feeding. [She was afraid she wouldn't have the money to feed the child so she supplemented with the breast. She didn't have much milk because she was so thin.] We decided to move back to our home town where our families had farms [Callaway County, MO]. Had just been there 3 weeks when the [shoe] factory closed and moved out to Virginia leaving town no work. I left the children in the care of my sister [Mary] and worked in the hatchery grading eggs while my husband started down the road looking for work. [He went with his brother John and another man]. They landed work at Higginsville [MO] near Kansas City. Work was steady but p--[can't read] . We had $2.50 per week for food over and above our garden. We ate beans. hog jowls.
Mother had a TIA in 1986. The doctor said she could no longer live alone, to put her name on the list at the nursing home. I did, but they did not call. It was all right, she was staying with us. I had Nathan, Jr, born in January for 3 days a week. Mother was unsteady on her feet and falling, losing her balance. After 10 months I called the nursing home. They had a place. After several years, she got well enough to go to a residential care place and 1992 she went to the Wilks reunion. Also I took her to Mary Stratton's funeral in Russellville. Then in the spring she broke her hip and had to go back to the nursing home. I knew she would never get out of the bed. She didn't. She lived about two months after she broke her hip. She was on oxygen the last month. The night she died, she was having trouble and said to the nurse, "Why don't I just die?" She did, before the sun rose. | Virginia Wilks

1860 Census-Franklin Co VA-Gill Creek Twp-NE Division-Wilkes p252 D-441/425
Rebecca 33
Missouri 8
Josephine 2
Lucy Wilks 18
This is Rebecca Anne Wilks listed on 1860 census as head of household. Note that William Henry Wilks is NOT listed with her. This family is listed in the same township as Archibald Wilks. I believe that Lucy Wilks age 18 listed in Rebecca's household was in fact the Lucy also listed on 1860 census in William E. Wilks (Anne's brother) household. Missouri Evelyn was listed as being born November 1852 on 1900 census and Josephine was born in 1858. Were they actually the daughters of William Henry Wilks or not-I can't say. It appears to me that they may have been either illegitimate or the children of a possible first husband of Rebecca also named Wilks. This is one of those "unanswered questions". I've always wondered why Rebecca was listed on 1860 census as head of household without William Henry Wilks. Now, obviously there can be any number of reasons why William wasn't listed, the most obvious would be that he was absent from home for some reason and wasn't listed; however, on any given day when the census taker dropped showed up not all family members would have been present all the time. It's possible that there were marital problems and some type of separation had occurred (after all-where does Rebecca get the wherewithal to live on her own?). Another possibility is that William H. Wilks may have been in jail and Rebecca was concealing this; however, he wasn't listed on 1860 census in Virginia -inmates were listed on census records). My speculation, based on the death record, is that Rebecca Ann Wilks was unmarried in 1860. This would mean that Missouri & Josephine were illegitimate -but this really isn't a far-fetched conclusion-first note the 6 year difference in their ages; 2nd illegitimate children weren't unknown in this family. Harriet Wilks (whom I now believe was a sister of Rebecca) was the common-law wife of Booker Smith and by whom she had 7 children all illegitimate); Missouri Evelyn had Marcus before she married John H. Ferguson; Mabel Burnett the m/o Lucy Burnett (w/o Archibald) had a sister named Elizabeth who had as many as 6 children out of wedlock and I now suspect that Anna Wilks listed on 1860 census may have actually been the d/o Archibald & Lucy and that her children may have also been born out of wedlock and or she was married to a Wilks cousin hence the surname Wilks.
I now suspect that the following was William Henry Wilks (h/o Rebecca):
1850 CENSUS FRANKLIN CO VA p85 D-385/384
Robert P. Dillon 41 VA 500
Martha 36 VA
Nancy 17 VA

Henry 4 VA
Calvin 2 VA
William Wilks 14 VA
1832-May 15 Franklin Co VA: Robt. P. Dillion & Martha Dillion Sur: John Saunders p140 (p73
The age is off by about 3 years since William Wilks was listed as 39 on 1870 census:
1870 Census-Franklin Co VA-Wilkes
P.O. Rocky Mount VA-Gill Creek Twp-NE Division-July 29, 1870-Claiborne list

Josephine 12 Rufus' sister

Arlina 2
Note that Rebecca lists her age as 39 in 1870 and 33 in 1860. As I said, this makes her age hard to pin down. William couldn't read or write so it's very possible he was off with his age as well. The interesting thing is that Robert P. Dillon was listed on the same page as William Wilks on 1870 census Franklin Co; in fact they are listed 4 households apart. I haven't been able to find William Wilks on 1860 census. There were these "orphaned" Wilks children listed on 1850 census Franklin Co VA:
1850 Census Franklin Co VA p172 D-1653/1647
Elijah Mitchell 40 VA 700
Ellanor 41 VA
William L. 14 VA
Mary A. 3 VA

Elizabeth Carter 27 VA
Margaret Wilks 16 VA
Flora A. 81 VA
1832-April 26 Franklin Co VA: Elisha Mitchell & Eleanor Gregory d/o Richard F. Sur: Samuel Mitchell p90 (p163
I don't know who Flora A. Wilks age 81 was.
1850 Census Franklin Co VA p172 D-1654/1658
Margaret Gregory 84 VA Farmer 300 (w/o Michael? Richard)
Mary Wilks 46 VA
1831-May 5 Franklin Co VA: Jonathan Wilks & Mary Gregory d/o Bichael (?) Sur: Elisha Mitchell
I think it's possible that William Wilks (h/o Rebecca) may have been the brother of Richard Wilks listed on 1850 census in household of Elijah Mitchell (whom I think was actually Elisha Mitchell). Pat said that family history has it that William Wilks had a brother in the CSA and Richard would fit:

His death certificate lists him as a widower, but I think he must have been divorced. His wife, Susan Emily Fletcher was listed as a surviving sister in Elizabeth Fletcher Hill's obituary in 1903, but her name was given as Susan Oestreich. I have found her death certificate and she died in 1929, her son John Willett gave the information, so I am sure this is right. School Teacher Died Sunday
Miss Florence Willett Passed Away at Home of Mrs. Nan Hall, Northwest of Fulton.
Miss Florence Willett, teacher of the Sunrise school, northwest of Fulton, died at 11 o'clock, Sunday night, at the home of Mrs. Nan Hall, where she had been boarding. Miss Willett would have been 23 years old on February 25.
Miss Willett was taken ill with influenza about a week ago. Jut a short time before her death she lapsed into unconsciousness, this being followed by a severe hemorrhage, and death followed almost immediately.
A sister, Miss Ollie Willett, and a cousin, Miss Bessie Haymart, who is attending the Fulton high school, are ill at the Willett home on Tenth Street in Fulton with influenza. Mrs. Willett herself is in frail health and the shock of the death of her daughter has been a severe one on her.
Miss Willett was born in the White Cloud neighborhood, west of town, but had been livng in Fulton since she was about seven years old. She attended the Fulton schools and was graduated from the Teachers Training Department of the local high school. For the past three years years she had been teaching at the Sunrise school in the Sunrise neighborhood, as well as in Fulton. She was held in the highest esteem for her friendly disposition and her willingness always to be of service to her relatives and friends. She was given an increase in salary each succeding year at the Sunrise school without solicitation on her part showing the high regard in which she was held by the director of the district. Last summer Miss Willett attended the State Teachers College at Warrensburg.
Miss Willett was a member of the Christian church and took an active part in the work of the Sunday school and Christian Endeavor. Here she had many warm loyal friends, to whom she was the embodiment of good nature and kindliness. Everywhere she went she won friends because of her loveable disposition and true Christian character.
Besides her mother, Mrs. Mary F. Willett, she is survived by one brother, Tom, and a sister, Miss Ollie.
The body was brought to Fulton, Monday, and funeral services probably will be held Tuesday with burial in the new cemetery. | Florence Lee Willett

Young Teacher Died Sunday.
Miss Florrence Willett Passed Away Last Night After Week's Illness with Influenza.
Miss florence Willett, 22 years old, died Sunday night at 11:30 o'clock at the hone of Mrs. Ann Hall, about six miles northwest of Fulton. Miss Willett was teacher of the Sunrise school northwest of Fulton, and was boarding at the home of Mrs. Hall, where she was taken ill with influenza about a week ago. About 11:00 o'clock Sunday night she was taken with a hemorrhage, becoming unconscious from it's effects and dying in about half an hour. The body was brought to Fulton Monday afternoon, and after short funeral services at the home, conducted by the Rev. W.C. Alcorn, internment was in the new cemetery.
Miss Willett had been teacher of Sunrise school for three years, and was one of Callaway's most successful instructors, having received an increase in salary every year. She was re-elected each year without even making application for the place. She was a graduate of the Fulton high school, taking the teachers' training course here, and last summer attended the Warrensburg Normal School.
She had been a member of the Fulton Christian church for a number of years, and was a teacher in the Sunday school of that church.
She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Mary Willett, of Tenth street, one sister, Miss Ollie, who is confined to her bed with illness, and a brother, Thomas, of this city, who, with his wife, was with Miss Florance at the time of her death.
The death of this successful young teacher will be received with sadness in the community in which she taught, and also by her Fulton and Callaway county friends. Great sympathy is felt for the bereaved family who mourn their loss. | Florence Lee Willett
