HISTORY OF GUTHRIE
by Kathryn Wilkerson Holt

Samuel T. Guthrie was born in Madison County, Kentucky, in 1793. His wife, Sally Phillips, was born in Casey County, Kentucky, in 1804. Samuel T. Guthrie came to Callaway County in 1819, and he was married to Sally Phillips on December 27, 1821. They settled on the present site of the town of Guthrie. Samuel T. was the first coroner of Callaway county, in the year 1821. He died April 24, 1872, at the age of 79, less than two months before the town was founded.

John Guthrie and Samuel N. Guthrie, sons of Samuel T. Guthrie, laid out the town of Guthrie, on June 10, 1872.

The first census shows Guthrie with a population of one hundred. The population has fluctuated very little until this present time. J. W. Bruton was the first postmaster, express agent, notary public and lumber -dealer. The railroad was built in 1872 at a cost of $640,000, running from Mexico, Missouri, to Cedar City, Missouri.

Ben Bigbee, a wealthy man who furnished the money to build the railroad and went broke due to this venture, no doubt was unable to underwrite the huge cost of building the railroad. The town was originally named Bigbee for this man. He was an aristrocrat, influential, and no doubt, wealthy. This may have been reason for the town being named for him. The old survey maps still show the east part of Guthrie as Bigbee. The old house on the John Reynold's farm, one mile south of Guthrie, had the air of a southern mansion, and may have been built by Ben Bigbee since at this time he lived in the area.

Martin Butler at one time owned all the land south and west of Guthrie. It was known as the Guthrie land and was approximately 640 acres. Matt Guthrie married a Butler and became heir to this land. The grave stones in Dry Fork Cemetery for the Butlers and Guthries came from the old cemtery. They are the most outstanding stones in the cemetery. Emerine Butler left an endowment fund for upkeep of the cemetery.

The Matt Guthrie home on the south central part of the farm was, and is to me still, my idea of heaven with a fireplace and little upper windows on each side with deep window casings, a winding corner stair case, a puncheon door with a latch string, a south window with a couch beneath, a shed kitchen with a door to the east, grapevines on a trellis over the well, a garden gate where holly hocks grew, a four-rail fence on either side of the walk, a fire bush and hugh oak trees on the lawn.

Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie were highly respected neighbors and were the parents of Logan, Campbell, Cordie, Sally and Pattie Guthrie.

Ewing Guthrie was the father of George and Jim Guthrie. Jim Guthrie was the father of Leslie and Orlean Guthrie Craighead. Frank Guthrie was the father of Baxter, Lou Gray, and Sallie Houston. They lived at the old Guthrie home, where Tonanzio's now stands. I remember, probably seventy years ago, the morning the old house burned; we stopped by on the way to school. Nellie, a girl who lived with Sallie, Lou and Bax, was sitting on a big rock crying. I presume this was the original house.

My father, "Bill Jack" Wilkerson, farmed the Guthrie land, approximately 640 acres. This was the Matt Guthrie farm located south and west of Guthrie. He raised wheat mostly on this land. There was not a single gully then. I was a very young child at that time. My husband J. C. (Tots) Holt told me Dad shipped as much as two car loads of wheat a year from Guthrie that he raised on this farm. It was very good land, and Dad, who was a good wheat farmer, took care of the land. It was quite a feat to sow and harvest three to four hundred acres of wheat with a horse drawn grain drill and grain binder and then to thresh with steam engine threshing machine and horse drawn bundle wagons and grain wagons. It took twelve to fourteen bundle wagons, six to eight men pitching bundles onto the wagons, three to four grain wagons, three machine men and several boys. The threshers spent several days, and the women spent many hours preparing and cooking the meals for possibly thirty men with farm hand appetites.

History records a beginning for this area at the time Samuel T. Guthrie and many other settlers came in 1817-1819. The first church in Guthrie was founded on October 4, 1823; it was the Cumberland Presbyterian. It was the third church organized in the county. It was a small log cabin daubed with clay, known as Log Providence. The church was built on what was known as Picayune Prairie. The location is south of what we called Graveyard Hill.

The pastor and members are listed in a former Callaway history book. Later, Brother Buchanan and Brother Russell served as pastors, and a frame building was built in Guthrie which stands today, but it is no longer a church building. What a shame that we lost such a great heritage! My mother and father, Eva and William H. Wilkerson, took their family to services there as well as to Dry Fork, where they were members as we were growing up. I have pleasant memories of this old church and its members.

Grandpa and Grandma, Robert and Nancy Criswell, lived in a house across the present road from the cemetery. A legend of their home told me by "Tots" was that a little colored girl was drawing water from the well with a bucket, and it was storming, lightning, and thundering. Either she was struck by lightning or was frightened and fell into the well and drowned. A depression in the ground and the rocks to the well are still visible.

Guthrie residents in 1974-75 were researching the beginning of the Guthrie School. My sister-in-law, Maude Holt Bedsworth, who reached 90 in 1979, and I thought that possibly the first school was held in the church building. Mr. Peru and Lark Fleshman were the first two teachers in the township.

Trains played a big role in Guthrie life and welfare. The north and south bound trains met in Guthrie at 10:00 o'clock in the morning. The south bound train was on the siding which ran from the east-west road to the school house. The north bound passenger train returned at 2:00 p.m., and the south bound train at 5:30 p.m. One could go to Fulton for a quick shopping trip on the afternoon trains. Everyone except the store keepers met the morning trains to see who was going north or south and who got what from the freight train. Horses, mules, cattle, sheep, hogs and grain were shipped to St. Louis and Chicago. The branch line was the Chicago and Alton line. My dad sold John Deere machinery and also Minneapo-lis-Moline. The machinery came unassembled and Dad had to set it up and get it into operation.

The first rural telephone in the county and possibly the state was from Guthrie to Ashland. Charles Birkhead was in charge of building the line and installing the phones. The phone in each home had a call of long or short rings or a combination of both. There was no privacy on these lines and this was not at all appreciated by the patrons. Mr. Birkhead told the women how to use the phones, not to be too close to the transmitter etc. Odga, Church, and Herbert Clatterbuck raised hound dogs and as typical boys, they got the old dogs to howl so the women could not hear each other. Much complaint got poor results. Boys will be boys! My father and mother were on this first rural line and I remember a call from Texas telling my father of the death of his mother. This impressed me since Mother and Dad were crying. At the time of this message we lived at the house of my birth, and by checking ages, I think the line was built in 1911-1912.

My husband "Tots" told me of a Mr. Jamison who kept stallions and jacks for breeding purposes. When he made a phone call, he announced "If any women are on the line, they had best hang up because of what I might say to my client." Naturally all the women listened in.

Moses Wilkerson

10563 From A History of Callaway County Missouri, 1884 book, which is not always accurate:
Moses and William Wilkerson were the sons of Moses Wilkerson, of England, who came to America and settled in Virginia before the Revolutionary War. He died some years afterward, and his widow married again. After their mother's second marriage, Moses and William went to Kentucky, and lived for some time in the fort at Boonesborough. **note: The bio never mentions a William who is the brother of Moses after the above paragraph. It does, however, go on to talk about Moses and his son, William.**

Moses married Aletha Anderson, who had lived in the fort with her parents three years, and was there when Jemima Boone and the Callaway girls were captured by the Indians. They afterwards settled in Montgomery county, Kentucky, and raised nine children, whose names were John, William, Abraham, Henry, Hiram, Haley, Nimrod, Cenia and Sally. Mrs. Wilkerson died in Kentucky an 1833. William, the second son, received a limited education, and after his father's death he was appointed executor of the estate and guardian for his brothers and sissters. The duties thus imposed upon him gave him a practical knowledge of business affairs, and the people of his county had so much confidence in his ability and integrity that they elected him a member of the county court while he was quite young. The court at that time was composed of twelve men, selected with reference to their ability and experience, and it was no small honor to be chosen. Mr. Wilkerson enlisted in the War of 1812, and was chosen first lieutenant of Captain George Arthur's company. They belonged to that portion of the army which operated in Canada, and Lietenant Wilkerson assisted in capturing a fort in which sevral hundred of the enemy were garrisoned. After the close of the war, he was elected colonel of militia, and was subsequently chosen to represent his county in the Legislature. In 1830 he came to Missouri and settled in Callaway county. In 1836 he was elected a member of the Legislature, and afterward represented the county in the same body during a portion of two terms. He was also presiding justice of the county court for several years. He died in 1845; his wife died in 1839. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Clark, daughter of James Clark, who came from Ireland, married a Miss Arbuckle, and settled in Greenbrier county, Virginia. Colonel Wilkerson was a high-toned, honorable gentleman; moral and upright, but not a member of any church. He was highly respected in his community, and his counsel and advice were sought by all, which he gave without ostentation or display, and always for what he considered best. He was modest and unassuming in his manners, and possessed an excellent mind, which he diligently cultivated. He was temperate in his habits, and never used profane language. In his family circle he was kind and indulgent, but firm in requiring his children to do what was right. He was an honest politician, and no competitor could ever say that he took an unfair advantage of him. The names of his children were Harrison, Achilles (a physician), William H., Narcissa C., Elizabeth and Emily.

10590 From A History of Callaway County Missouri, 1884 book, which is not always accurate:

William Hawley Wilkerson

10595 Vickie Miller notes:
I'm using Archibald Wilks as the touchstone of my conclusions because I believe that we are descended from him if not precisely how we are.

Archibald Wilks was born in 1782 Montgomery Co VA and died between 1860 & 1870 Franklin Co VA. He married Lucy Burnett d/o Joseph Burnett & Mabel Melton 16 June 1803 Bedford Co VA. We know that he had a son named William E. Wilks born 1822 with whom he was living on 1860 Franklin Co VA census. Barbara Eakley claimed that he also had sons James born 1809 married Elizabeth Crumb and John born 1812 who married a woman named Temperance. (I haven't been able to confirm or refute these two sons; and for now I have them listed as sons of Archibald) Also she believed that Peyton W. Wilks was also a son of Archibald (I now don't believe that there was a Peyton W. Wilks at all-although not to confuse you-Archibald Wilks had a brother named Peyton G. Wilks who migrated to Oregon and who married a woman named Anna Dallas). She also believed that Archibald had a daughter named Anna born 1804 who appears to have been the Anna Wilks listed on 1860 census with Archibald Wilks in household of William E. Wilks. I think that Anna Wilks was the mother of Rebecca Wilks and was the one living with William Henry Wilks and Rebecca Anne on 1870 Franklin Co census. In 1789 when Archibald was about 7 years old he was bound out to Anderson Melton in Bedford Co VA (I believe I may have said Grayson Co VA in my last email). Anderson Melton was the brother of Mabel Melton (m/o Lucy Burnett, Archibald's wife). They were the children of Absalom Melton who had a son named Allen Melton who married Ann Wilks (also called Elizabeth Ann Wilkes) 29 January 1787 Bedford Co VA. She's listed as a daughter of John Wilks & Elizabeth Mead who are believed to be Archibald Wilks' grandparents. Archibald's mother's name Sarah Wilks was listed on the court record when he was bound out; so we know his mother's name was Sarah; his father was deceased and not listed on the court record. It's believed his name may have been Henry but this is speculation and not proved; nor do I know what the basis of this speculation is. While I've come to doubt Barbara's research concerning Rebecca and William Henry (and Peyton W. Wilks), I haven't found any problems with her research of earlier Wilks-that seems to be good. (No, I'm not picking and choosing what looks good and what doesn't; from the start, I've had questions about Rebecca's ancestry-there were problems with it that weren't being addressed by Ms Eakley). It's believed then (and I do) that Archibald was a grandson of John Wilkes and Elizabeth Meade by a son of theirs. Circumstantially this fits well.

Archibald is listed on 1810 Census and 1840 Census and again in 1860; but can't be found in 1820, 1830, or 1850.

Who is the male 26-45 whose wife was probably the female 16-26? I don't know, except that he can't be a son of Archibald & Lucy nor is it likely that the female age 16-26 was their daughter. I think that James born 1809 is one of the males under 10-the other may be Rebecca's father or could be a child of the other couple living with them. One of the females under 10 may be the Anna Wilks born c1804 who would have been about 6 years old in 1810. I don't know if the Anna Wilks listed on 1860 census was Archibald's daughter or daughter-in- law. I don't know who the other 2 females listed under 10 were on this census. They could be additional daughters of Archibald and/or daughters of the other couple in the household or a combination of both. William E. Wilks born 1822 s/o Archibald and Lucy obviously isn't listed yet nor is the John Wilks who married Temperance who was born about 1812. Archibald's siblings are listed as: Anna Wilks married Samuel Williams; Henry Wilks married 1811 Lucy Smith (this would rule him out as male 26-45 unless he married twice or female 16-26 was a sister of Archibald and not the wife of the male 26-45; Jesse J. Wilks born 1779 M: 1801 Bedford Co VA Judith Pratt. He would have been 31 in 1810 -he isn't found on 1810 census Bedford Co and so could very well be the male 26-45 listed. Jesse Wilks had two daughters born before 1810 and one who was born c1810; he had 2 sons born before 1810-Samuel born 1800 & Jesse born 1807; all of Jesse's children born before 1810 later married. So the question is-is this Jesse's family listed with Archibald? In which case, Archibald's son James born c1809 isn't accounted for since the 2 males under 10 would have to be Samuel & Jesse. Archibald's final sibling was Peyton G. Wilkes born 1794 who married in 1815 and would have been about 16 in 1810 and so can't be the male 26-45 listed in household. It's possible that the male 26-45 could be a sibling of Lucy Burnett's-I haven't pursued this and so can't say. Since Archibald & Lucy were married in 1803, it's very likely that some or all of the children under 10 years old listed on 1810 census were theirs. It's also possible that the male 26-45 was an unknown brother of Archibald's.

1F 20-30
1F 20-30
1F 50-60 Lucy age 60

This is Archibald & Lucy Wilkes in 1840. The male 15-20 would be William E. Wilks born 1822 who would have been 18 years old in 1840. I suspect that at least one or more of the females age 20-30 could have been daughters of Archibald & Lucy; however the younger children under 15 years old almost certainly weren't children of Lucy who was born 24 Aug 1780 and would have been 60 years old in 1840. I suspect that at least one of the females 20-30 was either a daughter or widowed daughter-in-law with her children living with Archibald & Lucy. Archibald Wilks can't be found anywhere on 1850 census and so we don't know where he was or who was living with him in 1850. Anna Wilks born c1807 listed age 53 on 1860 census and 63 on 1870 census could have been one of the females age 20-30 even though she would have been about 33 years old in 1840; though it was common enough for ages to be off on census records. I don't know who any of the females ages 20-30 actually were; however if one of them was Anna born c1807 then the younger females in the household MIGHT be Harriet born c1825 age 15 who could be one of the females age 15-20; Rebecca was born around 1831 (her birth date is hard to determine because as you'll see on her census records that she isn't consistent about her age) she could be the female age 10-15; and Sophia born c1832 age 8 in 1840 could be the female age 5-10. This leaves the two younger males unknown (of course this is speculation as to the identities of the females in the household).
Archibald Wilks is found on 1860 census:

Rebecca 33
Missouri 8
Josephine 2
Lucy Wilks 18

This is Rebecca Anne Wilks listed on 1860 census as head of household. Note that William Henry Wilks is NOT listed with her. This family is listed in the same township as Archibald Wilks. I believe that Lucy Wilks age 18 listed in Rebecca's household was in fact the Lucy also listed on 1860 census in William E. Wilks household. Missouri Evelyn was listed as being born November 1852 on 1900 census and Josephine was born in 1858. Were they actually the daughters of William Henry Wilks or not-I can't say. It appears to me that they may have been either illegitimate or the children of a possible first husband of Rebecca also named Wilks. This is one of those "unanswered questions" I mentioned earlier. I've always wondered why Rebecca was listed on 1860 census as head of household without William Henry Wilks. Now, obviously there can be any number of reasons why William wasn't listed, the most obvious would be that he was absent from home for some reason and wasn't listed; however, on any given day when the census taker dropped showed up not all family members would have been present all the time. It's possible that there were marital problems and some type of separation had occurred (after all- where does Rebecca get the wherewithal to live on her own?). Another possibility is that William H. Wilks may have been in jail and Rebecca was concealing this; however, he wasn't listed on 1860 census in Virginia -inmates were listed on census records). My speculation, based on the death record, is that Rebecca Ann Wilks was unmarried in 1860. This would mean that Missouri & Josephine were illegitimate -but this really isn't a far-fetched conclusion-first note the 6 year difference in their ages; 2nd illegitimate children weren't unknown in this family. Harriet Wilks (whom I now believe was a sister of Rebecca) was the common-law wife of Booker Smith and by whom she had 7 children all illegitimate); Missouri Evelyn had Marcus before she married John H. Ferguson; Mabel Burnett the m/o Lucy Burnett (w/o Archibald) had a sister named Elizabeth who had as many as 6 children out of wedlock and I now suspect that Anna Wilks listed on 1860 census may have actually been the d/o Archibald & Lucy and that her children may have also been born out of wedlock and or she was married to a Wilks cousin hence the surname Wilks. Booker Smith was listed on page 253 1860 census D-446/430 so they were actually only 5 houses away from Rebecca Wilks on 1860 census. I haven't been able to find a Rebecca Craig/Craggit/Craighead or Rebecca Overstreet on 1850 census in either Bedford or Franklin Co Virginia- which doesn't mean she might not be listed elsewhere. However, I think that she was with the Archibald Wilks family and wasn't listed.

I now suspect that the following was William Henry Wilks (h/o Rebecca):

The age is off by about 3 years since William Wilks was listed as 39 on 1870 census:

Note that Rebecca lists her age as 39 in 1870 and 33 in 1860. As I said, this makes her age hard to pin down. William couldn't read or write so it's very possible he was off with his age as well. The interesting thing is that Robert P. Dillon was listed on the same page as William Wilks on 1870 census Franklin Co; in fact they are listed 4 households apart. I haven't been able to find William Wilks on 1860 census. There were these "orphaned" Wilks children listed on 1850 census Franklin Co VA:

I think it's possible that William Wilks (h/o Rebecca) may have been the brother of Richard Wilks listed on 1850 census in household of Elijah Mitchell (whom I think was actually Elisha Mitchell). Pat said that family history has it that William Wilks had a brother in the CSA and Richard would fit:

Barbara Eakley claimed that Sophia Wilks was a sister of William H. Wilks and that they were the children of Peyton W. Wilks and Anne Ashwell (which can't be true). As I said, I now think that Sophia was actually Rebecca's sister. Her death record and Rebecca's seems to bear this out:

Rebecca Wilks (white female) d. 1 Mar 1885 Franklin Co of pneumonia, age 45y, d/o Blade & Ann Wilks, b. Franklin Co, John P. Ferguson son-in-law reported (probably should be read John H. Ferguson) p205

Sophia A. Wilks (white female) d. 30 Jul 1880 Franklin Co of fever age 48yr, d/o Anna Wilks, b. Bedford Co, William E. Wilks uncle reported (p205

Note that William E. Wilks (b:1822) is listed as the uncle of Sophia Wilks (who apparently never married). Both she and Rebecca are listed as daughters of Ann/Anna Wilks. Rebecca is listed as the d/o "Blade" Wilks -I wonder if this might not be "Blue" Wilks

10596 I'm using Archibald Wilks as the touchstone of my conclusions because I believe that we are descended from him if not precisely how we are.

In 1789 when Archibald was about 7 years old he was bound out to Anderson Melton in Bedford Co VA.

I think that James born 1809 is one of the males under 10-the other may be Rebecca's father or could be a child of the other couple living with them. One of the females under 10 may be the Anna Wilks born c1804 who would have been about 6 years old in 1810. I don't know if the Anna Wilks listed on 1860 census was Archibald's daughter or daughter-in-law.

10597 Two parcels of land were deeded to Banjamin by his parents in Bedford County. The first of these was for 78 acres on March 3, 1784 on both sides of Orchard Creek. This gift deed read in part "for love, good will and affection they do bear their well beloved son." BRE 1 The second grant was 60 acres to Benjamin on Goose Creek in 1788, from his father, John Wilkes, Sr.
In 1790 the June Court of Bedford, Virginia issued a permit for Samuel and Benjamin to build amill, which read "on the motion of Samuel and Benjamin Wilks leave is granted to them to build a grist mill on Crab Orchard Creek on their own land, it appearing to the court that no other person will be affectred thereby."
During 1791 Benjamin and Sarah Wilkes sold 175 acres of land on Goose Creek to Thomas Leftwich. This appears to be the last record found for Benjamin Wilkes in Virginia BRE 2 He appears to have joined his parents and other family members in their journey to Georgia.
On August 4, 1792 a deed was made from James Buford of Wilkes County, Georgia on January 7, 1794 it was recorded, conveying 287 1/2 acres to Benjamin Qilkes in consideration of 100 pounds, located on North Fork of Oconee River adjoining Hezekiah Hendricks, granted to Benjamin Jones 8 December 1784. Witness James McLean, J.P. In the 1803-1806 Land Lottery of Oglethorpe County, Georgia, Benjamin received two draws. He was listed in Capt. Thomas' District as were John and Jesse Wilkes in the census of 1800. Benjamin recieved other land there in 1806 GOC 1 and on Jan. 17, 1808 he bought land from Thomas Calley. When Wilkes County was divided the Wilkes were then in Oglethorpe County. WFR 3
Benjamin and Sarah Wilkes are shown on the 1800 census with 10 children. Benjamin died in Oglethorpe County in 1809.
In 1809 Jesse Wilkes, in an unusual procedure, purchased 200 acres of and from the administrator of Benjamin's estate as the highest bidder, then sold htis land to Aaron Wilkes, Benjamin's son, for $10. This Jesse Wilkes was obviously of great good heart and by this act helped this family at a very trying time. I believe that he was Benjamin's brother, althought I cannot prove it [Lillian Jones Crews]

The settling of Benjamin's estate began in 1816 following this Georgia record:
Wilkes, Benjamin, dec. agreement to Division signaled by heirs: The widow, Sarah Wilkes, Moses, Osborn, Joel Wilkes, Polly, Benjah and Sarah Wilkes. Dec. 22, 1815
Thirty to thirty-five deeds were recorded between 1816 and 1836 for this family in Odletorpe County: sales and land division on Troublesome Creek, Indian Creek, Long Creek and on the Lexington/Augusta Road were made for the children of this family, thus it appears that many of them continued to live on land acquired by their father, Benjamin Wilkes.
The sequence of the children is unknown except for Aaron.
