John and Phillip Watts immigrated to America in 1673 and settled along the Ready branch of the Mattaponi. Susannah may have been a descendant of one of these Watts, a neighbor to John Key, and he may have married her before leaving Spotsylvania County.
Susannah Key paid taxes on 100 acres in Amherst County, Virginia in 1783 and 1787. She is listed in the enumerations of Amherst County for 1783 and 1785 as the head of a family of nine and in the personal property tax lists for the Amherst District. The personal property tax lists for 1788 and 1794 show that she was the mother of Dabney and Thomas Key. Dabney was probably born about 1767, based on his first Talley in the "over 21" column of the tax lists.
Susannah Key's maiden name is said to have been Watts - - possibly the Watts family of Spotsylvania and Albemarle counties, which has many gaps in its genealogy. Edward Watts (ca. 1675 - ca. 1750) patented land in St. George's Parish, Spotsylvania County, 1728, and left issue: Thomas (1695 - 1749), Edward (ca. 1698 - ca. 1760), David (1702 - 1767), William (1704 - 1760), and John (1710 - 1765). David Watts was a neighbor of John Key, Sr. of Albemarle County and owned adjoining land in that part of Louisa County which became Albemarle in 1761.
SUSANNA (WATTS) KEY
"Will"
The widow of John Key, Sr., of Amherst County, Virginia. This will is recorded in Nelson County, Virginia Will Book A, Pg. 93. The following copy is made from the original will, preserved in the Nelson County Clerk's office. (It should be noted that Nelson County was created in 1808 from the eastern part of Amherst County, Virginia). Susanna was born about 1717.
Item - To my son Dabney Key, I give and bequeath one of my colts which he may make choice of.
Item - To my daughters, Elizabeth Key, Barbara Key, Effy Key, and Omy Key, I give and bequeath my tract of land that I purchased of Elisha Peters, share and share alike.
Item - To my said daughters, Elizabeth, Barbara, Effy, and Omy, I give and bequeath all my house hold and kitchen furniture.
Item - It is my will and desire that my executors hereafter named may sell my stock of horses, cattle, hogs, plantation utensils, and the crop of all kinds that may be on the plantation at my decease and the money arising therefrom be equally divided between my said daughters, Elizabeth, Barbara, Effy, Omy, and my grandson Tandy Key.
In witness of all and each of these things herein contained, I have set my hand and seal this 26th day of July 1810. Source: The Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 24, July - Sep. 1980, Pg. 199-200. | Susannah Watts

Letter written by Earl on February 13, 1965 to Mrs. W.B. Craghead of Jetmore Kansas who co-arthored the Craighead book.
An Aunt told me that my great grandfather and his brother (possibly a twin)emigrated from Virginia to Callaway County, Missouri about 1822. I believe the town of Fulton MO was already named and laid out (BEFORE the Craigheads came). They settled not too far from Fulton which is the county seat of about 10,00 pop. (1960) and ther are more Cra(i)ghead names listed in the phone book now than any other name. All related in one way or another. My grandfather's first name was Powell. He had two brothers, Nichlos and Calvin; that I remember quite well. I have a quilt that my grandmother made in 1908. She embroidered her name on it which she spelled "Craghead" and the date 1908.
There were some Kemp men in Callaway Co. that my father claimed as third cousins.
The following is Earl's self biographical Sketch he wrote April 15, 1965.
Earl Bertin (Craghead) Weant was born June 16, 1892 on a farm three miles south of Fulton, Missouri. He attended the Calwood school and grew to manhood there. He worked as a farm hand for several years and after one stay in Colorado and two trips to the Kansas wheat harvests, he took a civil Service examination. On March 13, 1916 he was appointed Rural Mail Carrier at the Calwood office. He was transferred to the Tebbetts, Missouri office.
January 1, 1930 he resigned as mail carrier and move to Kansas City, MO. He resided ther, with his family, until July 1952. He then moved to Wichita, Kansas. He Retired in January 1956 and moved to La Mesa, CA, where he now resides. (1965)
He had his ups and downs through life - aside from being the victim of a broken home three different times. When a small boy, he was bitten by a copperhead snake and almost died. In 1910 he had a bout with double pheumonia and almost didn't survive. In 1918 he almost froze to death in a snow storm on the mail route and it was reported in the newspaper. In 1943, he was blown up in an explosion in an airplane factory, where he was employed. His helper, at his side, was killed on the spot. He was taken to the hospital more dead than alive, but after some time he emmerged with facial scars ans minus one eye. He was back at work in six months, and held down a full time job for the next 12 years.
