Death of Samuel Berry.
Samuel Berry, aged 73 years, one of the well-known residents of Callaway county, died on Wednesday evening of last week at the home of his son, James Edward Berry, at Hollywood, a suburb of Los Angeles, Cal. News of his death was transmitted in a message received by his son, Prof. George W. Berry, of Fulton, last Friday morning.
Mr. Berry had not been in the best of health in recent years and last October, in company with Mrs. Berry, departed for California to spend the winter. His death, the message stated, however, was very sudden and unexpected. Interment occurred in California.
Mr. Berry was born near Reform, February 14, 1838, and with the exception of several short periods, including his service in the Confederate army during the Civil War, was a life long resident of the Kingdom. For many years he was a farmer and stockman of the county, but removed to Fulton about ten years ago and since lived a retired life.
He was married to Miss Fannie McCall of Reform, on February 8, 1866, who, with the two sons mentioned above, survives him. One daughter, Miss Stella Berry, died ten years ago.
His ancestry runs back to Richard Berry, one of the pioneers of the state of Kentucky. The latter was his grandfather, and the kinsman and guardian of Nancy Hanks, who became the wife of Thomas Lincoln, father of the lamented president, Abraham Lincoln. Richard Berry signed the marriage contract for Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lincoln, necessary in nuptial events in those days. The original contract is said to be in the hands of the McCluer Publishing Company of New York. | Samuel Berry

Samuel W. Bartley Miss Virginia E. Berry 1 Sept 1877 D12
2nd wife, 1st wife was also named Virginia, born about the same time.
There is something not quite right about these records... the only death certificate I can find for a Virginia Bartley, has her born in 1850 and died in 1929, maiden name of Smart. The Virginia Bartley buried with Samuel Bartley was born in 1843 and died in 1926, which works with the 1870 and 1880 census. I don't find any other records for Virginia Bartley. The marriage date may have been transcribed wrong. The children were all born before 1877.
Note: from a relative of Virginia Berry Bartley:
Virginia's marrage date is Sept 1, 1867. According to the 1910 census, they both had only been married once.
They lived in Arkansas according to the 1900 and 1910 census. In 1920 Virginia was a widow living with her son-in-law. I am wondering if Virginia died in Arkansas too, as did Samuel. According to her sister Permelia's obit her sister Mrs Samuel M Bartley lived in Bebe, Arkansas. | Virginia C. Berry

Killed By Train
Wright Berry Meets Death Wednesday Morning
Fulton Youth Killed When Passenger Train Struck Coal Truck West of Fulton
Wright Berry, 24 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Berry, of Bluff street, was struck and killed by a south-bound Chicago and Alton passenger train at a crossing on the Columbia roadf, just west of this city, about 10:00 o'clock Wednesday morning. His death was practically instantaneous.
Funeral services over the body were conducted at the Baptist church, this city, at 2:00 o'clock Thursday afternoon, and burial was in the cemetery of Ebenezer Baptist church, northeast of Fulton.
Mr. Berry was driving a coal truck for the Fulton Coal and Mining company, west of Fulton, when the accident occurred. He was going west, toward the mine, the truck being unloaded. He was in the cab of the truck, on the left-hand side, on the opposite side from which the train was approaching. Besides the conductor and fireman of the train, it is likely that Mrs. Wilfley, who lives near the crossing, was the only witness. She said she saw the truck approaching the crossing and saw the train coming, but supposed no attempt would be made to cross ahead of the train.
The train struck the truck a little in front of the center, knocking it into a ditch several yards south of the crossing. It was badly damaged. The impact apparently threw Mr. Berry out so that the moving train caught him and dragged him at least so yards further along the track. His body was badly mangled, it nearly being severed in the middle.
Mr. Berry is survived by his parents, a widow and an infant son. His widow, before her marriage was Miss Mary Bates, daughter of Coy Bates, of Hatton. They had been married about two years, and made their home with Mr. Berry's parents.
The death of the young man, coming unexpectedly as it did, was a great shock to his many Fulton friends, and there are many who extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved parents and widow in their grief. | Wright J. Berry

Mrs. Elizabeth Holman Dead.
Pioneer of Callaway County Died at Home of Her Daughter, in Fulton, Sunday Afternoon.
Mrs. Elizabeth J. Holman, 84 years old, died Sunday afternoon at 1:20 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Offett, in Bluff street, after a lingering illness, having been confined to her bed for two months. She had been an invalid for a good many years, suffering a stroke of paralysis some years ago. She was taken with another stroke about five weeks age, and this with the infirmitites of age caused her death.
Funeral services were held at Westminister Presbyterian church, near Hatton, Monday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. S.G. Wood of Auxvasse, and burial was in the cemetery of that church.
Mrs. Holman was born on the old Black homestead, known as the Oscar Black place, near Hatton, March 21, 1841, her eighty-fourth birthday occurring the day before her death. She was a daughter of Samuel and Margaret Black, native West Virginians, and had lived in this county all her life, making her home of the farm until about two years ago when she came to Fulton to live with her daughter. She was the last member of a family of six children, those having died being William, John, Samuel and Oscar Black and Mrs. Mary McClintic.
Mrs. Holman was married January 9, 1861, to James E. Holman of Callaway county. To this union eight children were born, three of whom are dead, one dying in infancy. Samuel H. Holman died March 1, 1885, and Mrs. C.M. Brown died in 1918. The five surviving children are: J.B. Holman, of Hatton, I.W. Holman, of Fulton; W.N. Holman, of Columbia; Mrs. Mary H. Offutt, of Fulton, and Mrs. R.S. Burke, of Mexico.
Mrs. Holman had been a member of the Presbyterian church more than 60 years, and was a charter member of the Westminister church which was organized about 40 years ago. She was a member of one of Callaway's oldest and most substantial families, loving home and rearing her children in the faith which she believed. She practiced its teaching in her daily life and was loved and respected by neighbors and friends. Sympathy is extended to all those who mourn her death. | Elizabeth Jane Black

SAMUEL BLACK (DECEASED), for many years one of the substantial farmers and highly respected citizens of Liberty township, was born in Virginia on the 31st of July, 1804, and was reared in his native State. His father was William Black, also a native of Virginia. His mother's maiden name was Mary Price, and she was of the well-known Price family of the Old Dominion.
On the 26th of January, 1830, Samuel Black, the subject of this sketch, was married in Monroe county, West Virginia, to Miss Margaret M. Lynch, born in that county on the 15th of May, 1806. Her parents were John Lynch, originally from Ireland, and his wife, formerly a Miss Mary Best. In 1839 Samuel Black and wife removed to Missouri and settled in Callaway county. They located here on a small tract of land in the open prairie which he had entered, on which he improved a farm. He was a man of untiring industry and a good manager, so that he prospered in his new home and soon had a fine farm of 440 acres, all well improved. He also owned a few slaves. He was a man of an unpretending, domestic disposition, and had no desire for notoriety or prominence. He therefore lived a retired, quiet life, with no enemies and the friendship of all who knew him. He died on the 23d of October, 1881, in his seventy-eighth year. His widow, a motherly, gentle-hearted old lady, esteemed by all, still survives him, but she has been paralyzed for sixteen years.
They reared a family of seven children: Mary, now Mrs. Moses McClintick; William, of this county; John, at home; Lizzie J., now Mrs. James Holman, of Audrain county; Hugh L., died at the age of sixteen in 1860; Samuel K., of this county, and Oscar. Isabel died in early childhood; John and Oscar are carrying on the farm, and are devoting it to stock raising exclusively, having a large herd of cattle and a fine flock of sheep. John, who was born February 10, 1837, in West Virginia, was old enough for military service when the war broke out. He joined Capt. Earnest Leavell Blackburn Miss Anna Belle Carter 22 Apr 1901
I vaguely remember Uncle Buddy. In the 1950's he owned the Woodworth Hotel in Robinson, IL. My parents came from Missouri to Illinois in 1949 or 1950 to work at the hotel. They sold the hotel and moved back to Fulton, Mo. in the late 1950's. I believe Mary Ann Blackburn lived till the early 1980's.

When he married in 1901, the marriage license gave his home as Durant, Blue county, Indian Teritories. I remember my father telling me that Uncle Buddy had been an Indian agent at some time before he married Bess. I also think after their marriage they moved probably to Oklahoma for a while, which was part of what was then called Indian Teritory, but I do not think they stayed there very long and were back living in Fulton before 1910.
