10851 Her last name came from son Jame's death certificate, son Sterling's death certificate listed her maiden name as Mack. Nancy J. Womack

10852 Copy of a birth certificate shows a female child born 1/17/1886, and that it was their 3rd child. That would have been Trennie. I have no records of the first two children, they must have died as infants.

Elizabeth Wood

10854 In the 1850 census for Callaway County, John Kemp is listed with his second wife Elizabeth Smith nee Woods, whom he had married in 1841. They are living next to John's son Dudley Kemp and three households from John's daughter Mary "Polly" Kemp Smith.

At the 1846 July Term of the Supreme Court of Missouri, a case concerning Elizabeth S. Smith Kemp nee Wood's slave named Sophia revealed that Elizabeth's first husband Samuel Smith died in Warren County, Missouri in 1840, that she was his second wife, they had no children, and her slave Sophia was received from the estate of her deceased father, name not given. Her marriage to Samuel Smith in 1828 occurred in Franklin County, Virginia, and shows her maiden name was Woods. John Kemp's marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Smith nee Woods was recorded in Warren County, Missouri in 1841. Samuel Smith was the older brother of William H. Smith whose wife Mary "Polly" Kemp was the daughter of John Kemp and Fannie Dudley.

The inventory of John Kemp's estate listed a Negro woman named Sophia age 40. On August 14, 1856 in Callaway County, his widow Elizabeth S. Smith Kemp nee Woods married a third time to Michael Gilbert, Jr. who died shortly thereafter. By the 1860 census she was 70 years old and living with John Kemp's son Dudley Kemp in Callaway County under her former name of E. S. Kemp. In the 1860 slave census for Callaway County, Elizabeth S. Kemp is listed with a female slave age 45, a male slave age 18, and a female slave age 6. Samuel Smith's probate record in Warren County shows that his widow Elizabeth S. owned a Negro woman Sophia, a Negro boy Armstead, a Negro girl Francis, and a Negro boy James.

Elizabeth S. Smith Kemp Gilbert nee Woods died between August 1865, the date her will was written, and October 1865, the date her will was probated. Included in her probate file was a bill for William Kemp boarding her from October 19, 1864 to May 27, 1865, which was submitted by William Kemp's son Thomas G. Kemp. Also submitted on December 22, 1867 was a bill for services rendered to Elizabeth S. Gilbert by Sophia Kemp from January 1, to May 1, 1865 and witnessed by Thomas G. Kemp and Spencer Kemp. The black marriages for Callaway County reflect that Spencer Kemp had married Sophia Kemp on January 21, 1866.

In June 1946, Madison became the co-owner of Wright Brothers Grocery Store in Calwood with his brother, Ted Wright. This was the second generation of Wrights to own the Calwood store. 10895 The following is from the Pioneer Families of Missouri book written in 1876, which is not always accurate:
WRIGHT, William Wright was a native of England. He had a son named John, who was Tobacco Inspector at Fredericksburg, VA., at a very early date. The latter married ROSAMOND GRANT, daughter of CAPTAIN JOHN GRANT, by whom he had Margaret, Rosamond, Elizabeth, William, John and Winfield. The latter married JUDITH TINSLEY, daughter of EDWARD TINSLEY, of Madison Co., VA., and settled in Franklin Co., KY., in 1817. They had William, Henry T., James G., Rosamond, Elizabeth, Margaret P., Judith and Polly. Henry T. married REBECCA TINSLEY, of KY., and settled in Callaway Co., MO. in 1837. They had Henry, Jr., Winfield, Charles and George. After the death of his wife, Mr. Wright married PEACHEY TINSLEY, and they had 1 child, a daughter. Mr. Wright was married the third time to ELIZABETH JAMESON. James G., son of Winfield Wright, married REBECCA HAWKINS, of Franklin Co., KY., and settled in Audrain Co., MO. Elizabeth married REUBEN OVERTON, who settled in Callaway Co. in 1824. Margaret P. married WILLIAM R. MARTIN, who settled in Callaway Co. in 1827. Judith T. married SAMUEL P. MARTIN, who settled in Callaway Co. in 1824.

note posted to end of transcribed book:
Wright, William:
I came across your site, and on one page where you list families, under William Wright you say that he was from England which is incorrect. William Wright was the son of Richard Wright who died Oct. 10, 1700 Stafford Co., VA at the home of Capt. Richard Fossaker. He left his two young boys orphans. He had Mary Ellis take his youngest son William and Gilbert Alsop to take his oldest son Richard. I have copies of the Will and deposition.
William Wright was born abt. 1699 in Middlesex Co.. Va and died Oct. 15, 1789 Fredricksburg Va. His father was Richard Wright b: July 5, 1664 Bolton on Swaile, England and d:Oct. 10, 1700 Stafford Co. VA. Richard Wright's father was George Wright b: abt. 1627 Bolton on Swaile, England, and d: June 7, 1674 Bolton on Swaile, England. George married Beatrice Maulevere. George was the older brother of the "famous" Richard Whittington Wright who married Anne Mottrom. George stayed in England and inherited his father's estate.
Now William was married twice first to a Rosamond (?) mother of all of his children, then married after the death of his first wife to Mary Brent (no issue), his death was documented in Fredricksburg, VA newspapers. His oldest son John Wright married Rosamond Grand (daughter of Capt. John Grant). I have alot more information if you would like to see it.
