William Jerrod Herring was a son of John and Lucy Carver Herring, and was my 2nd great granduncle. He was born October 25, 1825 in Albemarle Co. Virginia. He had 9 brothers and 2 sisters. William was a farmer in Callaway County Missouri all his life.
William married Rebecca Ann Knight on September 14, 1848 in Callaway County Mo. Rebecca was a daughter of Wlliam L. Knight of Maryland and Celia Hornbuckle of North Carolina, a grandaughter of James Knight of Maryland and Nancy Williams originally of Maryland.
Rebecca was born July 12, 1827 in Callaway Co. Missouri. Two of her sisters, Amanda and Sarah, married two of her husband William's brothers, James C. and John P. Herring. Three Knight sisters married three Herring brothers.
William and Rebecca Herring had 3 children:

- Note about marriage date: transcribed as: Hook, James M - Herring, Betty Jane - Feb 20 1861. We believe the transcription of this marriage from the original was mistaken and it was 1869 not 1861. Also, the 1900 census shows that she had been married for 31 years, not 39 years. There are questions about her actual date of birth. I am using the date from her death certificate here. See notes in her gedcom file.

Death of William Herring
The death of William J. Herring, which occurred in this city, Monday morning, May 22, 1905, removed another of the pioneers. He had been affected with heart trouble for some time, and an acute attack of the ailment about a week previous to his demise, occasioned him to take to his bedm, where he lay until the Death angel came. He was buried at the new cemetery, on Wednesday with Masonic homors, after afuneral services at the Christian church by Rev. M.A. Hart.
William J. Herring was born in Albemarle county, Va., October 25, 1825, and came to Callaway county with his parents in 1838, where he lived continuously until his death. In September, 1848, he married Rebecca Knight who survives him. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. J.N. Hook of this county, Mrs. George Baskett, of Chicago, and one son, Silas W. Herring, of this county; two brothers also remain, Gideon C. Herring and Thomas W. Herring, both of whom reside south of Fulton. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and belonged to the Christian church and as well as being honorable and upright in his dealings with his fellow man, was a devout follower of the faith he professed, He loved the right, and let his conscience be his guide, and if William Herring had an enemy on earth, nobody knew it.
