Notes |
- Guthrie, Sarah E Holman, William H Apr 29 1857
This is a letter from W.H. Holeman to "sister" telling of Sarah's death.
No Envelope: "Sister" is probably Mary R. (Holman) Caldwell.
Grand Prairie January 30th 1859
Dear Sister
We are all well at present with the exception of colds Sarah died on the 24th Inst She died with the disease of the blood. She had a spell of the fever last fall and when she got up she took the jaundice which left her in a weak state of health all winter getting stronger sometimes than others But it seems like medicine was not to save her life as it was in the hands of a higher power. we moved up here on the 23rd of Dec her health being much improved. but in a short time she became confined to her bed again I called in Dr Russul[?] he did not consider her cure a dangerous one he left medicine She seemed to do well for 10 days She then took a change for the worse on Thursday and died on Monday She suffered but little pain and died like one going asleep She lived a christian life setting forth a bright example during our short journey here together. May our loss be her eternal gain. Our kind neighbors though many of them strangers to us showed us great kindness I feel like I am broke up myself James are going to continue here this year I send you a book mark of her work you must keep it to remember her she was buried at providence her funeral is to be preached at providence in march or April I remain your affectionate Brother
W H Holeman
